There’s been a constant, steady decline in that playerbase however, and new season bring fewer and fewer people back. Games not dead by far, and will probably always have some type of casual following for a multitude of reasons. However, the game has stagnated terribly and probably will never bounce back to anything it was, or could have been. It’s a slow descent into apathy for the community at large.

After 1.5 months of quitting this game I loaded a couple QP games and I can't even stomach those 3 games I used to do to complete daily challenges. Tank is a constant rock, paper, scissors back and forth revolving door. I miss the days when I just pick 1 of my main tanks and just outplayed whatever tanks the opposing team was using. Not to mention the 300 HP reaper just walking around uncontested.

I have been winning an absurdly high amount of games on tank by simply "hiding". I find if i dont expose myself at all and do nothing the enemy team doesn't know who to play and who to shoot at without a tank contributing in the slightest. Its actually comedic and a testament to the points you are making about formet, design amd playerbase.

The game went from "hero has shield and hammer, weak at distance good up close" to "hero has shotgun, and melee axe, triggers bleed, and has a magnet knife that CCs, with the knife you do different damage, also they can anti heal, speed and boost their teams health." The game lost its charm of simplicity for me. Every new hero does 12 things, Winston launched with leap and bubble, rammatra/JQ/mauga launched with 8 abilities 3 weapons, and 2 shields/status effects. Its not fun to try to get track of these new super hero characters. The game is dying because they give new heroes 6 of their ideas and then the next hero needs 6 as well that are different/unique to the previous heroes.

I took a year and a half break from the game, came back right after they nerfed Mauga and overall have been enjoying playing. I fall under that category of people who feel like the 1 tricks are tossing bcuz they refuse to swap and adapt. you know what? near the end of the support cycle of overwatch 1 the game was pretty good in most balancing issues. You had your counter picks, but they were not so overwhelming in favor of the counter. You could outplay your hard counter and win. It was still up to player skill. We also had something against 1 tricks at the beginning, but they became more viable when used creatively. Playing Torbjorn on Attack was never a good idea, but you could make it work and run over the enemy, if done right.

I loved your idea of a default hero skin with the gold tint like gold guns and it would actually go kinda hard to be honest. imagine a full golden dva mech, with her baby version having a pseudo gold suit. or instead of rein's default silver/metal armor he was covered in gold. or even Mercy flying around like a flying yellow ball in the sky. Would've been a sick reward for Competitive and assumingly easy to do seeing that it's just a reskin of the DEFAULT skin. If they can do multiple reskins and put them in the shop they can swap the color palette on their default skin and make it a competitive reward skin. But knowing blizzard even if they added these in, it'd be $20 in the shop or multiple $60 bundles releasing slowly to drip feed it to us as "content".

Overwatch has been dying since OW1. There used to be a lot of players that were very specific on their roles and just play that role (Me tank/support hybrid). When they buffed Reaper to 50% life steal back in OW1, that is when they lost a lost of the dedicated players. (Mind you there were the tweaks to the match maker before that buff which caused strife as well, but forced player evolution. This affected the lower and central ends of the ladder, not the top.) The Reaper buff was the last nail in the coffin for some players. I even left for close to a year, bc I was tired of watching my entire team get deleted, then myself even with headshots to Reaper. I came back bc I heard it had been corrected and better, which was true, but Brig was still busted. Mind you, I was in high plat with those issues. The Reaper change was due to the devs wanting to see more Reaper play in OWL, but it affected the ladder in ways they didn't see. The same premise holds true today with 5v5 and meta changes. As I told someone who taught me how to play better, "There is no reward for getting better in OW." Sure one could rank up, but with the matchmaker, throwers, trolls, smurfs, and many other variables, ranking up as a solo queue is very difficult. I have tried only to keep getting pushed back down. I can easily say the quality of the matches is more often than not bad. I enjoy a really good game, even if I lose, bc I was pushed. But a one-sided fight bc of a bad player or bad character ruins the experience. I cherish the good games and revel when I get that good OW feel, but again, that's far and few in between. On another note, 6v6 is available in custom games. If on the back end they chopped the code to go back to 6v6, then they made a serious mistake or an excuse not to go back to it.

The Overwatch 2 content is arguably the worst part of the Overwatch experience. Jeff Kaplan's game was a rough cut gem from a company that was ostensibly falling apart until the Activision merger and subsequent purchase by Microsoft. Things like 6v6 is still implementable, however laziness and the fact the community is still by and large "shut up and take my money" whenever a new content dump of mostly overpriced cosmetics hits, is the biggest barrier here. Also, Venture is a girl. She paints her nails, wears eyeliner, has coiffed hair, and most importantly, is voiced by a woman. Sorry, dungarees and a frumpy trench coat do not a male make, no matter what flag you march under. And yes, this clunky attempt at appealing to "woke" players was noticed and rejected by the core fans.

You say earlier in the video that Blizzard ignores feedback from people like Spilo, then later say you want people to be more like Spilo and less like Samito, specifically with ill will towards the developers. loved this video so much 🖤I started playing in early 2020 and I don’t think I’ve ever been more bored of the game than i am now. aside from comp there’s nothing to work for. even when ow 1 was recycling events and pve missions there were still new cosmetics or challenges to try to work for, but as a casual player there’s barely anything. There barely an identity to the heroes, players and game as a whole. It’s obvious that profit is more important than the actual game itself which is so sad to see. The battle passes aren’t even worth the money aside from the mythic tokens; it’s full of filler that no one will even use or care about. Concord is unironically way better what i can say in advance from the lengthy Concord gameplay op-ed I'm writting: the win conditions in Concord are positional awareness and aim, the win conditions in Overwatch are team play and hero match up. Any comparison between Concord and Overwatch doesn't find basis in reality. Concord is by all metrics a much more involved and enjoyable experience than Overwatch. I lost count of the times I came out frustrated from a OW match because no matter how good my individual performance was I could never make up for a bad team comp. I never had that frustration in concord.

I agree with a lot of the things you said, but unfortunately, until Blizzard starts losing money over the changes they make, they will not change their stance. I think we as the community (consumers) should stop supporting these changes by putting our wallet where our mouth is. We should stop buying skins and battle passes, which will force the Dev team to rethink what they're doing. I don't care about content at this point. What is the point of content if the play-ability of the game is trash? I want my skill to be rewarded. Instead, I get outplayed by abilities that require no skill, or aren't even counterable. EDIT: Also, I think we should be a little harder on the devs, not softer. Constructive criticism is great....if they even care to actually listen to their community. How many times have we watched the devs say one thing to the community, but then deliver something entirely different. We just had a dev blog, a meeting with content creators and the dev team (groupup podcast, ect), yet we didnt get any meaningful change to heros to change the state of the game in the right direction. I'm not saying to outright flame them, but I think a lot of content creators have been giving constructive feedback and it just falls on deaf ears.

i don't even play the f*ckin game anymore. if you're good, the ENTIRE ENEMY TEAM will let ya' know by switching to every counter there is specifically for your hero. if ya do well on winston, expect a rein reaper or tracer to come out. if ya do well on dva, expect a sym zarya to come out. and so on. and if you choose not to swap, both your teammates and the enemy will rain hell on you in chat for not conforming to the pathetic standard that overwatch 2 has nowadays.

also that post match progression screen has been made redundant changes like the 'You Completed a Daily Challenge'-Card which was previously displayed at Top-Right Corner.. but seriously the Portrait Borders need to return! I mean currently as a Casual Player, there is no reason to play the Game beyond Battle Pass Rank 200.. though one Good Change about Ranked is that Ranked Coins can be earned per 30 Matches.

personally i think the ~1,5 years echo shield meta is 100% better than this former shadow of it self. it has lost its spark, events sick if you dont want to pay extra, new players cant counterplay, we used to make friends on this game... just sad man. Have a great day everybody 👋

As a Dva main I feel like this is unfair. For one, Dva almost always had the advantage on a 1vs1 from 2016 to this very day, it's not like it changed. And this video is very biased, obviously dying to a Dva isn't fun, but diving with Dva(and thus getting the kill) became almost impossible to do in 5vs5 unless the Dva's opposing team is just plain stupid. Cause diving as the only tank severely relies on your team's capabilities and the opposing team's lack of capabilities

I played overwatch 2 for almost 2 years. Haven’t played it in a few months mostly due to bad matchmaking. 85% of the time my team either destroys or I get destroyed. No in between. Also toxic players. Going back to single player games for now.

i enjoy tank so so much... and counter swapping has completely ruined. i literally cannot play any hero i want anymore, and i am a qp WARRIOR. every single game, i am immediately countered and have to switch. and then they switch to counter who i switched to. and so on and so on lol. it's so bad. it's genuinely miserable

Here is my problem. I'm a sombra main by heart I love this little Latino hacker so fucking much. She is the main reason I play overwatch. And she is also the reason I stop playing overwatch when she was terrible I had to stop playing because whats the point if i cant play what i wanna play. The other problem if she is good then every one complains there is no true way to fix her unless you completely scrap her as a character which idk about you but that would make me stop playing overwatch. So how could you fix her to be fun and lethal but not just some niche that's a one of every 10 games

In ow1 on the off chance you were a dps running into a tank alone it wasn’t an immediate “oh I’m screwed I need help” you actually had a chance to kill them if you were good at the game. The only console that wasn’t gonna be able to run it was the damn Nintendo switch and who gives a shit about switch if youre playing on switch you’re probably not playing comp anyway. 5v5 was the worst thing to happen to OW and if you say otherwise you either haven’t played it before and seen how much better 6v6 is or you’ve gotten used to the trash that is 5v5 that you don’t understand how much better we had it

Every time I think about this game or wonder what a character might play like, I remember "they effectively lied about making a sequel, don't reward them for that" and I turn away from an install. I'll never get over Blizzard just scrapping the PVE and story that was the main reason I wanted to try OW2. Their willingness to drop that advertised major feature defining the sequel shows that the focus was REALLY on keeping the franchise and monetization alive. Blizzard can't get battlepass money by selling a story campaign, so they threw it away. And worse, they knew a year before launch it wasn't gonna happen. So while I'll keep an eye on the characters and look at lore when it exists, I can't put a minute into the game or expose myself to that cursed store.

Unfortunately, it isn't dying. But there is a huge problem in balancing the game. The developers are too dumb in understanding how to balance the characters enough to where every player can master just one character in every situation. Instead, one can just kill in mere seconds dramatically over others, which causes more heroes being used over others. This in no way promotes helping new players, nor does it promote choice. This, cancelling PvE, and other reasons, makes it apparent that they don't give a damn about any sense of casual. And don't get me started on how support players are treated by others.

I was a T200 Hanzo player who quit competitive after S9. I play mostly QP with the occasional comp session on lower-rank alt accounts with friends. Hanzo has been cited to have lost his identity even by the devs themselves. The simplest thing they can do to restore it is to buff his damage to 125. They clearly know this, yet still refuse to do so. Their poor balance decisions is singularly the greatest reason OW2 has lost dedicated players, such as myself. The 225 HP changes to mobility heroes was completely aimless. They were not oppressive or obnoxious because they were overpowered or unkillable. They were strong because there was very little to compete with them, with the exception of hitscan heroes, which also maintained their 250 HP. Mobility was used to cut through these and get to the supports guarded by these behemoth tanks. All they had to do was buff the struggling heroes. There is no variety in particularly the DPS role because there is nothing to compete with hitscan, other than mobility. This is why they are the only things being played, even now.

Good vid. 'Preciate it being structured and coherent, as opposed to the "OW is cooked" unhinged rant or nostalgia trip. I enjoy those too but this was a solid essay. I'm convinced the free to play marketplace made Blizz/Microsoft feel like they had to drastically dumb down the game. Improving one's play takes time, can be frustrating and requires overcoming adversity. A FTP gamer most likely isn't gonna be interested in that kind of commitment. They just wanna frag right away, get hooked and maybe blow some money in the shop. So heroes just become way more braindead and OP. The hero select screen becomes the path to victory. I also believe Microsoft AI has been implementing all the balance changes but that's a discussion for another time. Thanks again for the vid.

I am a new player and honestly i am having so much fun in the game. yes there are toxic players but so do 90% of the game, COD as a great example. I might have missed some fitures that have been taken out and that I would probably wont have the chance to experience. however, I still like the game, it fun, give us variety of different heroes from different back ground and interesting skills, and so much more. your points are fairs especially about the DVA part, but it would be kinda sad for us new players if the game died while we just started to have fun.

enjoy it while you can. Blizzard was very good at making people addicted to their games. The same addiction is in play with Overwatch 2, but they ruined some of their own mechanics that worked better in overwatch 1 so the "high" will go away much faster than in the first one. After that you might start to see the problems yourself. Anyway. have fun with it either way.
