Overwatch and the Support Dilemma

Unfortunately it is almost impossible to carry as a support main or someone who is mostly focussed on healing in Overwatch. I have effectively boxed myself into this role but is there hope? Tune in to find out!

DPS is definitely the best carry, healers are needed but quality DPS is definitely more decisive in the match.

I'm a Symmetra main. I focus on finding spots to place turrets, teleporter, and shield generator.

4:04 sounds like some tanks in Wow where they will pull adds with out waiting for the healer to get MANA. or stand in the bosses AOE and take massive damage while waiting for you to heal them

As someone who, after checking my stats, has no choice but to accept to being a support main (and tank secondary), I'm very familiar with one of the concerns you highlight in this video. Often when trying to fill in necessary roles in the team composition that aren't healers, although I feel a relief on the moment I see someone else lock in the slots for that role I'm neglecting, I can't help but to be unable in shaking off this sensation that, maybe those players don't have as much experience as healers and only locked those in because I "dared" to preemptively pick a DPS or Tank, thus leaving them no choice but to heal because they can at least recognize, a bad healer is better than none. My approach to this game includes getting a feel for every character's kit and their respective game awareness priorities, based on their kit's strenghts and fragilities. I top it off with a ton of synergy and counter theorycrafting and putting them to the test in Quick Play, perhaps to a fault as I end up leaving little to no free time off, to effectively grind my way up the ladder, into a respectable, or rather, "worth-proving" tier. Althought it shouldn't be too drastic of a grind, as I've maintained a positive winrate% across all the past and current seasons plus quick play, as a solo queuer, which should lead me to earning points more reliably than losing them, I really haven't put all that much time into the Competitive climb. Maybe soon, with the transition to Hook 2.0 and the refreshing sense of a "meta" without a Roadhog brandishing that opressive blindspot magnet, I'll feel compelled to commit. If I reach Diamond without feeling disapointed in my non-support heroes' winrate%, I'll consider your recruitment suggestion. Keep putting out content sharing your thoughts, pleasure to hear them.

I have never played competitive mode on quick play so I have never even heard of the diamond tier. But I play Mercy, and your gripes I feel exist from level 1 upwards. You just can't control everything and it frustrating.

I'm stuck at silver. I was 30 SR away from golf but just can't crack it. I main mercy but can play all healers. I also am too old to play a damage dealer so pretty much I am exactly what you say in this video. Even the team I run with doesn't win all that much because we're all tanks and support. A good DPS is so hard to find.

Now I am not offended one bit but this whole "oh switch to X" or "play as X" is completely missing the point on what I or Stardusk is saying. Ok so I switch to Zenny. I still die because 1. you lose out on a healer (zenny ain't no healer) 2. we are back to square one. I still die cause there is no offensive character to take out the pharah's. I think you're reading what I'm saying a little too literal. At my level, there isn't enough TEAM play going on. And there is no switching of characters that can fix that.

I don't think Overwatch is a good competitive game. It truly shines when you get your own mates and play however you wish, like when it was in Beta and early release. Just not when you're trying to move up the ranks.

This is false. Having better teammates applies to anybody. It doesn't matter what role you play, if you don't have good teammates, you're pretty screwed. Which is why soloq is pretty much a dead end with the current terrible rank system. Sure a healer main can't carry lower level team. But other role being able to carry a lower level team doesn't really happen either. As for being 40 years old, nothing can be further from the truth. There is zero zilch evidence anywhere on the planet that a nineteen year old is faster or better than somebody in their 40s when it comes to video games. Maybe if you're like in your 70s or something, but this isn't professional physical sports. It's sitting on a chair with a mouse and keyboard. If this idea of age was true, then there wouldn't be grandmasters at higher ages like 40s or 50s smoking players in their teens and twenties. Older players at top levels exist in every competitive game. Including the most skill intensive game, SC2.

Completely false. Tank and healer makes you climb faster if anything. Majority of players go for dps. So good tanks and healers are more in demand when you get in a soloq game. Sometimes you get in a game, and there will be insufficient tank and healer because everybody just wants to play dps. And of course you lose the game and your rank. Not that it isn't possible to win with all dps. But usually if the tank/healing is insufficient or nonexistent, it's a disadvantage to the team. Be good at tank or healing, you climb faster. DPS players can climb soloq by carrying if playing at a much higher level than where they are currently ranked. But the closer they get to the rank they should be, the more difficult it is for them or even any type of player to rank up in soloq. Always best to have a good team that plays at your level to get to the rank that you should be. But if playing soloq, there is no evidence of dps or any particular type being easier to rank up. If anything, it's tank or healer that is easier to rank up with. But yes Soldier is overpowered which has nothing to do with this, but is more about imbalance with the game.
