When Reinhardt’s friend told him to “Be your team’s shield.” that’s the huge feels moment! Because that line “Don’t worry my friends. I will be your shield!” is one of Reinhardt’s most used lines in the game.

Everything about Reinhardt's behavior at the start of this short compared to his behavior in the modern day is a huge tribute to how much this one man, Balderich, affected him.

Always loved the symbolism of him giving his weapon to the older guy, meaning that he's not going to need it since he will be focused on defending and not attacking anymore

Little piece of trivia. Balderich throwing one of his hammers is a nod to Reinhardt's original design. They initially gave him the ability to throw his hammer to strike ranged targets, but would have to then retrieve it, and that left him unable to actually defend himself if he wasnt able to get his hammer.; so they changed it to swinging his hammer and sending a gout of flame at his enemies instead (like the Crusader in the Last Bastion short)

You can definitely see Balderich using the gout of flame in this video killing 2 bastions in the castle. (right after he "helicopters" with the double hammer)

Also that was baldritch in the short. If you look at the armor, it's clearly him, or someone with the almost the exact same armor.

+Legogodzilla I think it was meant to be Balderich in "The Last Bastion." I'm guessing they didn't finalize Balderich's actual armor design until this short when they decided to make it a Rein Skin. That's probably why the Crusader in "The Last Bastion" looks a little different.

After that cut back, him standing there old and full of scars. “I have been called, I must answer”… The regret, the guilt, the weight of this… like self imposed sense of duty, almost punishing. It sounds like a man always trying to make up for past actions but never forgiving himself, never allowing himself to have peace.

This trailer is actually amazing because its major character development. In his youth, Reinhardt was your cliche reckless solo maverick type character always trying to wrack up the solo points. But his recklessness finally caught up with him and it cost him his friend's life. This was a major wake up call for him and he finally began to understand just how deep the weight of his oath was. I feel him handing over his hammer was more symbolic than anything else. Yes the other guy lost his shield so may as well dual wield, but more importantly, Reinhardt handing over the hammer means that now he will truly embrace what it means to "be their shield". I dunno. Maybe i'm making too much of it all, but that is what i got from this.

Fact 1. During The Last Bastion you can see Eichenwalde Castle behind Bastion while he is traversing the Black Forest. Fact 2. The Crusaders and the German army attracted the Omnics towards Eichenwalde to get them away from Stuttgart, the city Bastion was walking to in the Last Bastion, the city is also visible as well from Eichenwalde map in the game.

"The Last Bastion" was released when the Eichenwalde map was released. The Crusader seen during the Bastion flashback is not Reinhardt: it was Balderich, who is the leader of the Crusaders and the one who lost his life in this short. You can get both Balderich's original shinning armor as well as an aged version of the armor as skins for Reinhardt. Also, the Crusaders were a military order of modern knights active during the Omnic Crisis. They worked in conjunction with the German military, providing support for attached teams of soldiers, who utilized their shields to provide cover and advance under fire. They were equipped with power armor capable of deploying barrier shields, and utilized rocket hammers as their standard weapon.

Actually, the Crusader in the Bastion-short isn't Reinhardt, it's Balderich von Adler. The commanding officer seen here, the guy that dies. And the level is called Eichenwalde, a (fictious) town in Germany and apparently one of the major german battlegrounds during the Omnic crisis that spawned Overwatch as a whole. And the in-universe lore behind what happens during games on the Eichenwalde map is to reclaim the armor of Balderich. And yes, the girl is Torbjörns daughter, Brigitte, who is an engineer like her old man and she accompanies Reinhardt as his 'squire', keeping his armor intact like Torbjörn used to. And according to newest lore, she is also Reinhardt's goddaughter and he chose her name, because Torbjörn and Reinhardt are quite close. And yeah, from what we know, the Crusaders' armored suits are basically exoskelettons with built in weaponry (the way i see it, they somewhat resemble the suits of the Terran marines in Starcraft) and judging from Reinhardt, i guess that one of the conditions to being able to serve as a Crusader - who were basically a modern-era order of knights and a special division of the german Bundeswehr (that's what we call our military), with General Balderich von Adler being their leader - is that the guy (or woman) inside has to be quite big. I mean, even without his suit, Reinhardt is massive, even at the age of 61.
