I went from over 200 plants to now 51 plants and I’m still trying to downsize. If I’m not completely in love with a plant I’m getting rid of it. I now only buy plants that makes me excited to see a new leaf and no longer buy plants for the hype. I’m now able to keep up with watering, fertilizing, repotting and pest control. As a result my plants are growing huge and lush 🥰

Another lovely video, Janee’!🪴 And you are so right about everything you said. Like anything else that feels overwhelming, WE get to choose when to pull back. Houseplant care is not the exception. I think every plant enthusiast will eventually find their sweet spot in terms of how many plants they can properly care for without overwhelm. My sweet spot is between 30-35 houseplants because my outdoor garden also keeps me busy. Stay well, Janee’!😊🪴🪴🪴

It's great that you're having this conversation for plant parents grasp all that goes into plant care. I just moved with over 150+ plants. It was a huge task for me. Varigated plants have reverted. Sensitive plants that don't like to be moved (calatheas/marantas) have faded. Video is helpful but should also mention cost (lighting, supplies, etc.) adds up. Thanks for touching on the subject.

Oh my goodnesss!!! Moving with that many plants can definitely be stressful. Sorry some reverted and faded. And yes, cost and plant accessories definitely add up! Thank you Dee!💚

plant burnout is real. I just gave away about 10 of my house plants .I struggle with some of my favorite plants. so after months fighting with these plants. I decided to just give them to someone who has the time for them. I'll come back to them at another time. im just working on the maintenance on the ones im keeping. re-potting and refreshing the soil , getting everyone propped and looking their best 😊 that's making me happy 😊 😊😊. too many issues bring me down. regroup is the way to go.

Love that intro! The only begonia I had that ever did decent started to not..I was over it and in the bin it goes. I can only try to rescue something so much and if it's stressing me more than bringing me joy to rehab..I just CANNOT. I'm realizing I like the easy care stuff and trying to pick things that'll work in my environment is always the best choice! I'm also realizing I can't have it all 😅 haha and that's ok!
@cheliajones99077 ай бұрын
@melg8475 you are 💯 right. good minds think alike. Remember, not every plant will adapt to our environment. no matter what we do or how bad we want to own that plant.

Yes, downsizing is Great. Give some to friends & family is a wonderful idea. I also put 2 or 3 plants together in one pot especially small plants because the soil dries out very quickly than bigger plants It can become an addiction, so set boundaries that you will not buy any more if you are overwhelmed taking care of too many plants!! Plant care is Therapy so enjoy it. 💕💕 💕

Your right, plant burnout is real. I have been re-potting plants all evening, and now into the early morning. I got all my newest succulents potted up. Really happy about that. Now have been going through my Thanksgiving cactus, and Easter cactus. I am re-potting the ones I want to keep, the other's I won't be re-potting, someone else can do that. Still have all my baby Indian Rope Hoya's to re-pot. WelI guess I got 2 done, out of 16. Was going to do more, but started spilling things, was just too tired to do anymore plants. Still have lots to do, but will be working on those tomorrow night. I'm not going to be able to do all my Hoya;s, as I'm running out of the special potting mix I bought. So will be saving up for some more, to get shipped to me. But shipping is So expensive. I'm going to need to buy more potting soil I mix up, with other things, to. This HOBBY, is NOT CHEAP!!!! I went through my prop boxes and planted 2 plants, one from each box. Other box, I think is a write off but I'll just leave it and see. Once I finish sorting the Thanksgiving cactus, I'm going to put an ad on Marketplace and just give them away. I don't want to be bothered with a bunch of people. One person can take them all. I even tossed some stuff I had in a water jar for propping. I looked at them, and thought I must be nuts propping more!!!! LOL When I'm all done I am going to be VERY careful about what plants I add to my mostly succulent collection, same with cactus, and anything else, that's a totally different variety of plants. I only have so much room, and want to enjoy what I have, or add. The Thanksgiving plants are the ones that have really got me down. So they have to go, one way or the other.

I think it's less for me about the amount I have and more about how it makes me feel in a room. I need places my eye can rest at in my home...because somedays plants CAN feel like a chore rather than a joyful hobby..and i enjoy other things and decor! So it can be difficult, especially for someone living in a small space, to find that balance! It's definitely attainable though!

@janeesimone7 ай бұрын
Doooo it!
@Griotgoods7 ай бұрын
My other question when it comes to counting plants is aren’t we really just counting vessels the plants are in? Cuz like me potting 2 smaller pots of rooted cuttings of pothos together into one does that now count as 1 or 2 plants? Like I also think about how arbitrary counting becomes when you think about it like that. I’ve just defaulted as of the last 4-6 months to saying I have over 130 houseplants when I’m talking to people at markets about my planters and plant collection. Because tbh I don’t care about specifics rather than just to be like talking myself off the checkout page on the nursery site like there are x many plant children you have to feed already in your home.

(1) u don't have to propagate everything (2) u don't need a duplicate as insurance (3) u don't need several plants that look similar eg hoya linearis vs rhipsalis baccifera (4) u don't need to rehab a plant that u can easily get a replacement of (5) u don't need to keep a plant for sentimental reasons if u hate it

Thank you for these tips… 🙏🏼 I’m the same way, sorta, if I’m not feeling up to it for whatever reason, whether it’s physical or emotional, or both, I don’t! Lol! Really, I don’t even have to think about not doing it.. i just get over it. I guess that’s the definition of laziness? Jk. Actually it’s depression, and many things caused by OTHER people in my life and external dramas sucking the will and strength from my once effervescent self… so dramatic. Sorry. 😜 But also, I do have countless projects, or plants that need to be repotted, or just cuttings that need potting, ya know, from six MONTHS ago… 🙄 I also live with my parents again as of the pandemic, which doesn’t help… it’s a large property, at least, but that’s just more kryptonite for my plant addictions. 🙃 Plus, living w others, any mess or disorganization on my part will stand out. Then I have to explain all of this to them. But they’re the types to expect you to "just do it" and get the proper "results". Then maybe they’ll ask questions or you can give reasonings (excuses to them) later. If at all. If they even care. Ha. So, part of it, for me, is also about developing that initiative I once had in life, and deciding on one or two plants per day. Or just one. Or none. But that way, I can know something was done without burning out. Plus now it’s summer, I live in San Diego, it’s a B when it’s hot. I’m not willing to garden at sunrise EVERY single day! 😂 I might consider it a few days a week, to garden before it gets hot out, but girl… haha

Burnout is real! That's why I never understand ppl with 150+ plants and they have a sep job or more than 2 other ppl in the house (i.e. 2 kids, 1 kid/1 partner, etc.). Try to keep mix of plants under certain number and cultivated down to lower care requirements (water once a week max all plants except my flowering maple and props). Giving props and 2 more plants in not in love with away at swap to keep space open for those I really desire.

It does not phase me at all to downsize with plants. I will throw away a plant in a heartbeat. They are supposed to make you happy, not sad, or depressed. People watch a lot of videos online and immediately want to purchase more plants. Nope! not me. Less is more.
