The AI often change where they deploy their units based on where the player puts theirs. I often see this when redoing sieges.

they get aggressive until late game and you have star fortresses everywhere, 8x line infantry in each province and gun batteries in them, they get very passive and don't want to attack your provinces even on legendary

One issue that shogun has that ive noticed, which is actually a bug, is the issue that keep occuring when you are fighting siege battles with multiple armies. It is not that shogun 2 unit pathfinding is bad, or stupid. Its that whenever there is really large amount of units on the map, the game straight up lags out the units, and they dont "fail" at pathfinding, they stand absolutely still for upwards of 2 minutes before executing the command. They dont do this on smaler scale battles at all, and its only a bug that occurs when there is multiple armies involved. You can easily see this when you issue small corrections to their position, they will just bug out. Often forcing them into melee for 1 second might fix the issue. This is more prevalent in fall of the samurai because of the need for the entire unit to be in position to fire, and the ai tend to form larger armies compared to standard shogun 2

@@forrestpenrod2294 Most likely the engine struggled in pathfinding requests. It pulls them all in a list and execute them one by one. The problem is AI will ask request frequently so when you ask for yours they end up at the bottom of the list and therefore wait for the engine to treat all the others first. Still for it to be minutes before having an answer is weird, it should be just a few seconds so either there is a bug or a problem in the pathfinding algorithm itself.

@@Gyratus Been playing a lot recently. The longest ive had was when i defended with a large army of levies, and there was 3 attacking armies. The units would just not move for what felt like eternity. Your explantion makes sense, but im not familiar with the Total war engine.

The same bug exists in total war warhammer 3. It won't happen for 2 minutes but in a larger battle in can take 10-15 seconds just for an archer unit to turn and start firing and it only occurs on massive battles.

The rapid fire on the matchlock towers is extremely powerful, and isn't limited to two uses. Those towers alone can beat a full stack as long as you have one unit to prevent their capture. Rapid fire seems to double or triple the fire rate, and unlike arrow towers the gun towers have a 100% kill rate per shot. Towers in FOTS are no joke, the Gatling and cannon towers in particular are insane. They make it so you can defend any settlement with nothing but a few levy spears. The AI rarely brings enough arty to destroy all the towers.

I wish I still had the save for my most epic FOTS battle ever. I had a high level settlement with 2500 troops between the army and the garrison but I was attacked by four armies for a total of 10000 enemies coming at me. I fought as hard as I could but just ran out of gas and the enemy still had 2500 troops left when my last ones fell. But I think Legend would have won that battle.

It still saddens me we didn't get an American Civil War saga game after Fall of the Samurai. A lot of the new elements could've been really fleshed out like the railroad system, espionage, sabotage and the large variety of field artillery and rifles.

I remember doing a similar challenge to this with Constantinople in MTW2. Turns out, it really is easy to hold it pretty much indefinitely against the AI of that game, and once cannon towers come, it literally can't be lost. But Shogun 2 is a different story. Though the challenge might be easier with vanilla Shogun's Kyoto than with FOTS.

Had a really interesting situation in a recent BI campaign, playing as the Celts defending Bordeaux with four units of gallowglasses against three or four Vandal stacks. Nearly managed it because each stack attacked by itself in a separate battle (they got siege equipment straightaway) and I would just kill the infantry, but eventually lost. A few days ago, I realised this would be an interesting video, but closest save in that campaign was ten turns or so before this situation. Oh well

I've found that the generals will always dismount and climb the walls, but only after all other units have routed. There seems to be some sort of trigger that fires once all other units are off the map, sometimes earlier. This may not happen if the player has units outside of the fortress.

When there's a lot of troops in siege battles shogun 2 seems to break. I haven't seen near as many issues with troops in your vids compared to my own experience. A good portion of the time men get stuck on the walls and refuse to leave them to line up. Tell troops to move and they'll stand there for a solid minute before deciding to obey. It's like the game tries to do a round-robin thing where it only calculates the pathfinding for a few units at a time and it can take quite awhile before your troops get their turn. Only seems to happen in siege battles tho

Ganbatte comes with the revolver general upgrade at development level 3. The General's Hatamoto has a different ability that affects traditional units better (melee attack or defense or something?).

Can I suggest playing Rome total war remastered play though campaign, with the Rome expanded mod on steam installed. Over 100 factions, many religions that rlly matter, for example when you capture a greek settlement as the Carthaginians you can't recruit your unit rosta unless you convert a settlement to your religion, untill you've done that, you can only recruit and retrain mercenaries of that religion, for the Greeks it's Cretan archers, hoplites and skirmishers. Also any faction will horde unless all generals r dead. So I know you don't like Rome's path finding and all that but this does make the campaign gameplay really really tough. On very hard I'm struggling
