Here's what I'm not understanding. David, you say that Ann Widdecombe is talking sense. She talks about the border between Gibraltar and Spain as an example of how the Northern Ireland border could work. But the reply (that is cut short in the video) is that both Gibraltar and Spain are currently *IN THE EU*. If we leave with no deal, the situation becomes *nothing like* the current border between Gibraltar and Spain. If you regard that as making sense, then, well, feel free to explain. There's a reason people think Leavers are stupid.
@djbcybertench5 жыл бұрын
Greg M “people think leavers are stupid”... resorting to insults aimed at 17.4 million voters is devisive and unhelpful. You may have family or friends that voted leave, or disagree with you in some other way, do you call them stupid ? I value our democracy and respect people having diverse views and opinions. Being free to express their views is an important part of that. Ok, you picked up on what I assume was a mistake by AW but that doesn’t make her stupid. There are 12 European nations (population >300 million) not in the EU with thousands of kilometres of borders... most of which are not “hard” e.g. Finland/Russia, Switzerland/France, Spain/Morocco etc. The population of Northern Ireland is less than 2 million and Ireland less than 5 million... managing their border could readily be modelled on one of the existing EU borders which are far more extensive and potentially complex. It seems evident that the nominated (not elected by citizens) EU officials are using the historically sensitive Irish issue as a spurious negotiation tactic.

this was nothing on the ballot about a hard border in ireland either
@leeenglish43635 жыл бұрын
@@Geffo555 you are true. The paper clearly stated remain in the European Union or leave the European Union. May has came to Parliament with a proposal on how this withdrawal will be implemented when our departure is enacted. This is in no way a trade deal. It is a departure deal. Now Parliament has a say if we are to accept this deal. Now this leaves the UK with a few options. Accept the offer, reject offer and leave wto, reject offer and try to get a different deal. All options are fulfilling the referendum result. Now if one is voted down by Parliament that leaves us with two. If the European Union refuses to negotiate further (against article 50) that gives us one option. Remaining is not an option as we have a government that stood on a manifesto to cary out the 2016 vote. A second referendum is not an option as the only mandate to carry that out lay with the lib dems, they didn't do to well. Now I stand by democratic process, we must leave come what may and if there is to be another vote it must first be implemented in the same way In which 2016 was. A manifesto commitment.

I disagree that the Leave campaign demonised immigrants. It simply pointed to the reality of the existence of mass immigration and the effects of too much immigration on jobs, wages, housing and services. Insofar as they commented on the quality of immigrants, it was based on realistic estimations and analyses of accurate figures (e.g. labour skill levels, the danger of terrorist infiltration through migration from North Africa and the Middle East, etc.) which I suppose some will disagree with (wrongly, imo) but the intent was not to demonise and did not apply to the vast majority of (legal) immigrants. But even if it were true... The Remain campaign *definitely* did demonise Leave voters and their reasons for voting calling them racist and stupid. Which of these had a more distorting effect on the vote? It's at least equally bad of both. But I'd argue that the Remain camp's demonisation of Leave voters and arguments had a more distorting effect on the vote.
