Paris Lees: the truth about trans people

Paris Lees is a trailblazer: a trans woman who emerged into public view at the beginning of the 2010s when trans people had very little visibility at all, she was the first trans columnist at Vogue, a presenter, a journalist, and campaigner. Her stunning new memoir - What It Feels Like For A Girl - documents a life that began on a Nottinghamshire council estate, the anti-LGBTQ hatred she suffered growing up, spending time in a young offender's institution, to ending up a panellist on Question Time to presenting shows on the BBC.
We talk about her life - and how trans people are suffering a vicious campaign of transphobia in modern Britain.

This is Jill Murphy, I don’t know why I always come up as John ! I live in Hucknall and was really interested in this interview, and now I’ve heard it will definitely buy Paris’s book. Paris comes over as a lovely compassionate woman and I’m very sorry for the horrible time she had growing up here. Don’t think it would have been any easier at that time anywhere else, especially in the East Midlands unfortunately. The culture and lack of education is surely to blame but certainly no excuse. Let’s all hope things will improve and do our best to help it happen.

It's very interesting because my brother is a effeminate man and he often gets called a puff or a bender or people assume he is gay. You don't necessarily have to be a member of the LGBTQ 'community' to understand what homophobia feels like.
@NIRDIAN1
@NIRDIAN1 3 жыл бұрын
Homophobia/transphobia/etc. always has fallout outside the groups being targeted, because their aim is to remove anything that isn't "the ideal" from society. MANY butch cis women in the UK have now been harassed and attacked by transphobes who, amongst other things "want to see [their] genitals!" to "prove [their] womanhood". Similarly, sports and bathroom laws in the US are enabling unsupervised adults (mostly cis men!) to essentially 'look in students' panties', "just to make sure"... Hate that targets "some of us" will always eventually widen in scope and damage almost "all of us".

This was a great discussion, and I'm always learning more since my trans daughter came out a few years ago. It breaks my heart the bullying that takes place during childhood, and it infuriates me the bullying and inhumanity that continues to take place by grown-ups and adults who demoralize, delegitimize, and dehumanize my daughter and many others' trans children. For my daughter, I gravitate now to positive role models like Paris Lees & Abigail Thorn and many brave others, and I appreciate all the trans allies out there, too. Knowing that you all exist, voice, and fight for trans rights gives me hope for my child's future and gets me out of the depths of dread that I feel when I witness bullies' actions and comments.

firstly, two beautiful people talking with empathy and reason is a joy to see and hear. secondly, transphobia is boomer feminism's brexit. trans women are being scapegoated by the same tabloid media who scapegoated non white and migrant communities. this resulted in an increase in hate crimes and violence against those communities being targeted. the media cannot hold the tory government to account because they represent the interests of the class who own the media so they redirect the anger and frustration at the devastation being inflicted on the UK by a upper class tory government and their incompetence at handling the pandemic towards a statisitically insignificant out group. divide and rule. it does not have to be clever. it only has to work. finally, paris is welcome in canada anytime. i am a trans woman from the uk who transitioned when i left the uk. i would never go back.

As a black cis-women in this country (I recently made a video about this)I'm really feeling how people really don't care for change. Amazing and powerful interview, I genuinely feel the same as Paris, I wouldn’t think twice about leaving the country because as a non-white person I feel very unwelcome in this country. Pretty much everything I do works towards the objective of moving outside of the UK precisely because of the the reasons mentioned by Paris. Solidarity to all those who feel the need to escape and also to those who feel they must stay in the UK and fight. Hopefully one day this will be a welcoming and tolerant nation for trans people but until then I agree with Paris, this country has failed and is complicit in the persecution of several groups within society.

If you genuinely think England is disgusting then its either because you've been indoctrinated to think that way or because you're a utopian idealist. If it's the former then its going to be very hard to reason with someone who doesn't value reason. If it's the latter then reality is never going to live up to your expectation no matter how much you wish for it. You're in an impossible position of your own making.

Cracking interview. I can relate to Paris's despair but would urge her to think carefully about moving from Britain as a solution. Where is this perfect country where trans and other people marginalized or abused because of their sexuality are universally welcomed? If there is, I´ve never heard of it. The US? Forget it. Not even LA. I'll be honest, I moved first to the Netherlands and then to Spain in pursuit of this objective. In many respects I'm happier. Catalonia, where I now live, has some very progressive LGBTQ policies but there is still an undercurrent of hatred that sometimes manifests itself in vicious attacks on the gay/transgender community, such as just this weekend, for instance, on Barcelona beaches. I don't want to diminish her difficulties, the psychological strain of constantly standing up for who you are in a hostile world, but someone with her strength of personality, skill and determination is needed to advance the debate for the sake of others in a similar predicament. Otherwise the forces of division and hatred win. I wish Paris success with the book.

If you are insistent that it is not and that they are just middle class white men. Which is firstly a sexist remark and also an transphobic remark. That makes you a bigot. If you don't like that then I suggest you take it up with ECHR and not waste my time with your rubbish.

@s midnight As previously stated your words are both transphobic and sexist. Your facts on UK prison figures are not accurate and they are also not a true reflection of society. As before if you have a problem with the law I suggest you take it up with the ECHR. I do not wish to be harassed and have transphobic slurs hurled at me and most certainly not by a stranger that does not accept that I did not write the laws of this country. My initial statement was not directed at any particular person yet you have attacked me for saying that a bigot will be a bigot which is a fact.

@s midnight For you information the official figures are unverified but based on the Ministry Of Justice data. If we look at the Ministry of Justice’s official statistics, the number of trans people in prison for sexual offences is very small compared to the overall population of prisoners serving time for sexual offences. For example, as of 31 December 2018, there were 13,512 prisoners serving sentences for sexual offences in England and Wales. This represents 19% of the sentenced prison population.35 If there were 60 trans prisoners serving sentences for sexual offences, that represents 0.4% of all sex offenders in prison. In other words, less than half-a-percent of prisoners serving sentences for sex offences are known to be trans.36 Ministry of Justice data also indicates that there are twice as many non-trans women in prison for sex offences than trans women.37 While the Ministry has not provided a breakdown of the Trans Prisoners Info Sheet #2: Frequently Asked Questions 13 specific sexual offences women in prison were charged with, we can look at defendants in court as an indication. For example, in the year ending 2017, there were 186 female defendants proceeded against at magistrates’ courts for sexual offences. Of those, 69 were for sexual assaults on females; 18 were assaults on males; 67 were sexual activity with minors; 24 were other sexual offences. So no I have not Googled it I have access to the official figures.

Has anyone read Kathleen Stock's book: Material Girls? I'm not a fan of its tone, but don't disagree with all of it. I've been reading it with a view to understand both sides of this phenomenon. I've also been a follower and fan of trans video game journalist, Laura Kate Dale, for many years. Her book, Uncomfortable Lables, is really illuminating and worth reading. I'll add Paris' to the list!

I watched this as a non-progressive person hoping to understand better what people really mean by trans-rights. Toilet spaces and sports categories seem like practical issues that could be resolved relatively easily (maybe). But there seems to be something deeper coming from Paris, this idea of being 'accepted'. But what does that really mean...does it mean to be liked by others since we all have the same rights in law already (toilets and sports aside)? Isn't it asking for the moon for there to be a human right to be liked? Isn't there a human responsibility too?

you can dislike the colour green and still accept that green things exist. if a purple thing gets painted green you may not like it, but you have to accept that it is now green and is no longer purple no matter how much you like purple

@@niamhelse9027 hi. I agree with that regarding colours. But what do you mean practically when you use the word 'accept'? I think everyone agrees that no one should be physically attacked, shouted at, or refused a job, etc. Is that all there is to acceptance?

@@manchester.misfit6297 to me social acceptance means that someone isn't discriminated against on the basis of things that they can't control (race, gender, sexuality etc) and that they are free to live in peace. In your original comment you mention we all have the same rights in law, but there are still many hoops trans people have to jump through to be legally and medically recognised as their gender, which is where a lack of political acceptance comes in too

@@AndReaMckay94 All I could find was a couple of pay-to-read online articles from guardian, independent and thetimes which detail that story, which seems correct, and a tweet saying that Paris "did time in a young offenders’ institute for being part of a gang that robbed and beat an elderly, gay man very severely, almost to death." Apparently said victim later died from his injuries. Horrifying story. But all that the online article was about was how much of a "cruel punishment" it is to put a trans woman in men's prison. Absolute disregard for humanity right there. Instead of respecting the victim of the crime and respecting the men who go to prison at the same rate that they respect Paris Lees, they treat her differently from the male subjects in this story, the protagonist of the story, poor Paris. Newsflash, going to prison for everyone is a cruel punishment. Also being brutally attacked by anyone is a cruel fate. Strange times, with strange morals.

@@RenegadeShepard69 I had a look too, and all I could find was the tweet you mentioned on some Terf's Twitter. While every mainstream-media mention I could find, just said she did time for helping a fellow prostitute burgle a client when she was 16. So I'd say the likelihood is that the Twitter Terf is making it up. Because if the story were true, it would not only be easily verifiable, but would have been all over the Daily Mail years ago already.

I don’t have a problem with Paris, she is very beautiful and has an interesting story. I’m happy for Paris to have all the rights afforded in our decent society but I do worry about the encroachment of all this on women. It opens the floodgates, there are so many well documented stories of how this has been affecting women and it will only get worse. We don’t deserve it. Owen has a blank and pitiless gaze towards women.
