Thank you JF. I really appreciate that. I was debating on these or a stand of Maple trees not far from where I live, just a block away, but these birch trees were just a bit more interesting now that the leaves have all fallen. Hope you are well my friend.

Hi Marty Amazing how you make such realistic trees emerge from the blank page. The final product looks great. The sky really made it come together beautifully and the trees really pop. Going to save this video to try for when I have the pencils out :) Hooe you're having a good weekend.

Hi Annie - Thank you, this was a fun one to do. As Essie pointed out below the aspen and birch leaves as really cool in that they can rattle in the wind, especially in the autumn. Maybe you've heard that before? I left the leaves out of this one since they were mostly gone now as it late autumn here Minnesota.

@owingsart oh yes, we used to go to a cottage up on Lake Huron that was surrounded by birch trees and the girl guide campsite we went to had lots around as well, so I know the sound well! I also used to take the birch bark that had fallen to use for making little boats or for 'paper' so birch trees have a soft spot in my heart. Our trees are also mostly leafless here in SW Ontario now too. Only a few hanging onto an occasional branch :)

Marty do you know the difference between the birch trees and the aspen trees? Just looked it up, it’s mainly the leaves and for the aspen the sound when a breeze rattles the rounded leaves.

Yes indeed. The look a LOT alike, especially from a distance, but if you get up close the bark is different. Birch has like paper thin bark that is really easy to peel and you can even paint on it. Aspen bark is thicker. Yes I love that rattling noise in the autumn. Both Birch and Aspen can make that sound and it's wonderful. I don't see a lot of birch trees south of the Mason-Dixon, but do see Aspen further south.

cute burches! thank you! I recently got a set of water soluable materials from carandache in a tint box (the box seduced me 😂). It has 3 graphite pencils with tints (red, gren, blue), couple of watercolour pencils (ochre and red) and blocks of tinted graphite (same as pencils). Any idea what to draw/paint with those? 😅

Hi Marty, I have three pages of birch or aspen trees in my watercolor sketch book. There are no branches on them. I've tried, in the past, to make birch trees with branches; but, they end up looking messy. A friend said that, when viewed at ground level, there are not many branches visible at all. She said that in order to see the branches I eould have to change my perspective

@@Donna_G Good experience to look up from the bottom. Not sure why there aren’t many branches, but you can leave them out initially and see what things look like I think.
