Owl House Creator Dana Terrace Reveals New Lore - MomoCon 2024

While speaking at two different panels during MomoCon 2024, Owl House creator Dana Terrace answered fan questions revealing new Owl House lore.
I attended both panels and here is my account of the answers she gave.

LORE INFORMATION:
Number #7: Favorite music.
A fan asked what kind of music each character would listen to. Dana said that Luz would probably love covers of anime songs and K-Pop. Lilith would listen to classical music in front of others, but once she was alone in her room she would rock out to heavy metal. Zeno Robinson said Hunter would be a fan of Linkin Park!
Number #6: The island killed Belos.
A fan asked if the boiling rain that melted Belos was caused by The Boiling Isles, Titan Luz, or something else entirely. Dana said that she kept it ambiguous on purpose, leaving it up to audience interpretation, but ultimately she admitted that yes. It was the island itself sending a message that Belo’s time was up and he had to go.
Number #5: Hooty’s birthday.
A fan asked if the name of the Owl House panel was a reflection on Hooty and if the day of the panel (which was on May 26th) was Hooty’s canonical birthday. Dana said yes, it was in fact Hooty’s birthday!
Number #4: Dell’s palisman.
We know that the palisman that chose Hunter was named “Flapjack,” Dana revealed after the show ended that Hunter’s new palisman was named “Waffles,” and a fan asked her what Del's palisman was named. Dana revealed that Del’s palisman is named “Toast!”
Number #3: Darius had seen his Golden Guard’s face.
A fan asked if Darius had seen the face of his mentor, the previous Golden Guard before Hunter. And if he had, why didn’t it freak him out that both Golden Guards had the same face. Dana said yes, Darius had seen his mentor’s face, but who’s to say if that Golden Guard looked like Hunter. It is true that the Golden Guard Grimwalkers that Belos created were modeled after his brother Caleb, but as Zeno Robinson pointed out, Belos did say that Hunter was the one Grimwalker who looked the most like Caleb. So it’s safe to say the others looked much different.
Number #2: A Grimwalker’s age.
A fan asked if someone creates a Grimwalker, do they get to choose the age. Dana responded that yes, the creator does get to decide the age, and that Belos had been experimenting for years with creating different Grimwalkers at different ages. When he created Hunter, he made him toddler age so it would be easier to manipulate and brainwash him with Belo’s twisted ideology.
Number #1: The Luz/Amity height debate.
A fan asked Dana to end the debate once and for all… who is taller, Luz or Amity? Dana thought long and hard before finally answering that Luz is technically taller because Amity wears heels.

I like to add since I was at momocon that week, I asked Dana if Stringbean can shapeshift into a weapon and she answered only animals. I also asked what sort of magic Luz can do with Stringbean without the Titans magic and Dana answered that Stringbean can not only give Luz flight like any palisman can, but also can shapeshift into mystic animals like a dragon to shoot fire or even a kelpe to breath underwater.

One TOH lore question that still torments me is the question of what artificial magic exactly is. We know Belos learned it from The Collector and can harness it through his glyph scars, and we know it can be imbued into objects like staffs. I assume it’s essentially the collector equivalent of glyphs (I.e. sharing power with mortals) but I really want to know what makes it “artificial” and why Belos would describe it as such to Hunter.

I always thought it functioned similarly to electricity. A ton of it is natural (like static charges and neurons firing with electrical impulses), but if you're trying to channel it without having a really solid knowledge of exactly what you're doing, things can get really dangerous really fast

Here's a question(s) that SHOULD have been asked at the panel. 1. While it was clear that Luz graduated from Gravesfield High alongside Vee, did she ALSO graduate from Hexside? If not, how else was she able to apply for the University of Wild Magic...besides having connections with the Headmaster? 2. Did Vee ever introduce the Nocedas to her Basilisk family (if she had one) and if so, how did the meeting go down? 3. How long do you think it will take for King to become as big as his dad (not so much in terms of the ISLAND itself but in terms of the Titan LUZ met in the In-Between Realm)? 4. Could Luz ever reassume her Titan form again like so many fan comics suggest? 5. If there had been more time, how would the dialogue exchange between Camila, Eda and King have gone down during their first meeting?

I can answer some of your questions, Luz graduated from Hexside cause she didn't leave the demon realm as shown by her mom convincing her not to leave the demon realm in for the future, as for Gravesfield high school Luz didn't graduate from there until she was 18 years old as shown in the series finale's epilogue, I'm pretty sure vee's original family is long gone since she's basically a resurrected clone, well king is a titan so he could share his magic with Luz like his dad did in the finale and in those fan comics so yeah Luz could go titan Luz again if she wanted to, if the scene of Eda and king meeting Camila had been longer, Luz would have said mama this is my best friend Eda Clawthorne, and then Camila would have asked Eda if she's the one who's been taking care of Luz while she was in the demon realm, and then would give Eda a big hug and say thank you.

@@Brett-uq4tz The reason I ask the question about graduating is because we only saw Luz's diploma and graduation photo from the Human Realm. As for the Basilisk Family, part of me suspected that those basilisks outside the Headmaster door could be related to Vee. Finally, due to how nervous Eda looked when she saw Camila; I always pictured her saying "uh...Hello, Human Mother of Luz" or something like that

@@SilverScribe85 we only saw the one photo and diploma because of time constraints since the epilogue was only 6 minutes, like I said I am very sure vee is the only member of her basilisk family still alive cause Belos was resurrecting them in general, and yes Eda acted a little nervous but that's only cause the scene was a few seconds instead of four minutes like it would have been if the scene was much longer or if we had gotten a 4th season.

I wondered if Jacob was a descendent of Caleb? It's guessed that Caleb and Evelyn had a child. If it was born looking human enough, would the child have ended up in the human realm in a kind of Superman from krypton scenario? I wonder if Evelyn even escaped with the child? If he was from Caleb with a history in the family that didn't tell him much so he went on the net and got massively misinformed about witches.

I would’ve assumed that Belos/philip used the Golden Guards as backup bodies, and that how he’s lived as long as he did, just body hopping from guard to guard every time they “betrayed” him, so I’d assumed that Darius’s mentor was the body Belos/Philip was currently using. Also the question I would ask was what did Manny (Luz’s Dad) do before getting sick. People use to think he had a job as a firefighter or paramedic, or some “first responder” type job saving lives and that WAS the theory of how had died, and I’d also as if whatever sickness he died from was genetic and if a cure was found after he died, so if it is genetic Luz wouldn’t die too if they ever inherited the same disease. I’d also ask what kind of books the other characters like, Luz and Amity seem to prefer the “Fantasy” genre like with Azura, Luz also seems to have some interest in Anime/manga. Camila Hunter and Gus have their Sci-fi interests. I just wonder who else would be Anime/manga fans or comic book fans, and if so what kind of anime would they be a fan of. What manga they would read, who would prefer the series over the manga or vice versa, who would prefer subs to dubs and vice versa, Hunter seems like he’d find Full Metal Alchemist and Frankenstein “relatable” and maybe like Twilight, also Masha seems like a “team Edward” Twilight fan, where Hunter liking wolves would probably be “Team Jacob”, and I’d find the idea of them being a bit “salty” with a hint of “passive aggressive” with each other when ever the topic is brought up, but they otherwise get along just fine as long as you don’t bring up that “particular topic”. Like they are fine any day of the week but butt heads on that one topic. Gus also seems they’d like classic horror novels like Frankenstein, Dracula, Invisible Man, Jekyll & Hyde, etc. and be a Black and White horror movie buff. Probably ask Amity to build a projector or find one at an auction or yard sale or something, Gus also seem like they’d be a comic book fan, of what superhero MAYBE Zatanta, Dr Fate or Dr Strange, but their favorite villain would definitely be Mysterio, Willow’s would favorites definitely be Swamp Thing and Poison Ivy.

I would be really curious to know what part the titans used to have on the ecosystem of the planet. Were there multiple huge titans at the same time, how many? What did they eat? Could they have turned smaller out of will? Were there any towns built on them, since parasitic creatures, owl beasts and creatures like Vee seem like something that would've thrived on top of titans. Would there occasionally be passed away titan islands, where some populations of witches lived in? Did there use to be more land before the Titan Hunters and Archivists did so many titans in that their stomach acids drowned almost all available land to survive in?

I got a few questions in mind for the owl house’s creator. 1. why season three of the owl House only had three episodes? 2. in the beginning of the owl house Camila ask her daughter Luz if she has any real friends? I can answer a few of those: 1. Because Disney cut season 3 short. So Dana and the team had to reconstruct the second half of season 2 to move the plot forward faster. 2. I don't think Luz had friends in season 1. It seemed like everyone thought of Luz as "the weird kid" and she seemed really lonely. 5. Because some people are really shitty and should not be parents. 7. The internet tells me The Titan is a bigender, intersex character. The Titan did say in Watching and Dreaming: "I am both King and Queen, best of both things! But dad works fine." So I don't think gender matters much to Titans. 9. Because she supports the LGBTQ+ community. I'm glad she did, everyone deserves to be seen and represented in media!

@@claireaquos6532 This is not true. The term "Asperger's Syndrome" is an expression many people of us indeed say even nowadays. And Hans Asperger did not kill even one of his patients. And I do not make historical revisionism by saying that. In the euthanasia program of the Hitler Reich when many autistic people were brought into the gas chambers and murdered by carbon monoxide in Hans Asperger was definitely not involved. Hans Asperger had many autistic patients who were brought into the institution "Am Spiegelgrund" in Steinhof near the Austrian capital city Wien. And a big proportion of these people were deported into the Schloss Hartheim castle and then into the gassing chamber of Hartheim where many autistic people were killed with carbon monoxide. Hans Asperger was a member of a commission that decided who of his autistic patients were brought to the Am Spiegelgrund institution. But not he himself decided that but his commission comrades! He did not select! And if many physicians nowadays decide to erase the term Asperger's Syndrome and the term Asperger Autism these physicians bring many autistic people even into danger. Those autistic people who primarily had characteristics that were considered typical of Asperger's autism according to older diagnostic systems and which were also diagnosed with Asperger's autism are now those autistic people who no longer receive an autism diagnosis at all and in this way are left in the lurch and are abandoned and deserted by the psychiatries and hospitals. They do not get help anymore. And I tell you even more. Nowadays in Germany there was made exactly that. There was made this horrific change in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. They replaced the ICD 10 by the ICD 11 and in this way brought many autistic people into danger. In the ICD 11 there is no differentiation of the forms of autism anymore. This is the pure anti-individualism. And I even can tell you the exact background. People who have Asperger's autism are louder and more rebellious. And therefore they cannot that easily be placed or relegated into jobs that are considered typically autistic. Because they do not fulfill such a stereotypical pattern that is often made about autistic people by the physicians and therapists. And many therapists and physicians even want to get rid of those autistic cases who do not fulfill those stereotypical patterns because they are harder for them to handle and dealing with them costs more money. And therefore these therapists wanted to have a manual that does not include these not stereotypical cliched autistic cases. They wanted to get rid of us Asperger autistic persons because we are to difficult for them to treat and because we cost too much money. In this way, these doctors and psychologists shockingly manage to create an image for the stupid, vulgar majority of people as fighters for the rights of autistic people, while in reality they leave the majority of autistic people alone with exactly this decision. And this is definitely inhuman and it is autistophobic indeed. Therefore I get one special thing crystal clear. And I say it in exactly this moment. The term Asperger autism or Asperger's syndrome must be maintained and it must be introduced again where this term is abandoned already. The term Asperger autism must be maintained because only by doing that it really is possible to make that differentiation between these autistic cases who are synesthetically constituted autists with this typical declarative semantic and episodic long-term memory brain pattern and that intensive speech ability in the adulthood and these autistic cases who are autists in that stereotypical taciturn and laconic way and who are completely withdrawn into a niche and completely socially disintegrated. This differentiation mus be maintained. Everything else would be autistophobic and would bring a big percentage of autistic people, especially the Asperger autistic people, in big danger. I say the truth.

I'm surprised nobody raised the question about Lilith and her sigil. Its been something I still can't get over with. She shares the Owl curse with Eda. The only reason why Eda survived the day of unity, was because of Raine ripping off her hand. But how did Lilith survived it? The only logical explanation I can think of, is that after she was fired, they removed her sigil. But that doesn't really make any sense, since A. I don't think they knew how to remove a sigil back then, and B. Belos goal was to kill with the sigils as many witches as possible, so removing one from Lilith would be stupid. Also, why Belos didn't destroy Lilith palisman when she was still working for him? He was taking them away from every other worker after all... (Don't get me wrong, I'm still super happy we get any content at all, the height between Luz and Amity was also something that was bothering me a lot lmao)

I was there I’m really upset I missed her panel. I was with inexperienced friends they had never gone to a con before (neither had I) and tho we got there in time we missed the panel as we didn’t have a good idea of where and when it was. I ended up spending more than 3 hours trying to get her signature but no luck the line had filled up and they weren’t letting anyone in the line anymore (I left the line since dana wasn’t showing up and figured I’d come back later) after which they told me she might open up signatures again at six which gave me new hope. My friends and I sat playing board game till six and I went over hoping to get her signature again and lo and behold they closed the con early. Just my luck… I did get Matt bralys signature though! And ultimately we had a fun time even if I had to miss some panels waiting for Dana 😓

I remember awhile back someone asked Dana about network vs. independent animation, and if she wishes TOH had gone the indy route. How strange is it that Disney leaked that they don't hire straight white men anymore and yet shows with so much talent, heart-felt intriguing stories and amazing worlds are being canceled with the excuse that they are 'too gay' so other countries aren't airing them or edit anything with LGBTQ+ messages out.
