That's an owl, for ya. My favorite species being the Barred Owl, for it's distinct "Who cooks for you?/Who cooks for you all?" call. To be more specific, it's call is described as the before mentioned question, as it sounds like it is saying that (despite not being able to talk, like humans can). It also has a lovely plumage, allowing for it to camouflage in trees (and it's pitch-black eyes, which is an evolutionary trait, that was developed as a way to hide in the dark).

Fun fact: If you ever find a feather that one side has splits all down it and the other side is full with no splits, it's a owl feather. The splits let the air go thru it so there's no flapping sound.

I adore Owl's, except very late one night I walked down the path to my home when a Barn Owl flew at me from behind. It touched my hair and disappeared. It scared the hell out of me. Over the next few years that Owl used our roof to hunt from. I felt proud of having our own flying, 'watch dog'.

I have seen Snowy owls & Great Horned ( Hoot) owls & I have heard these owls mostly at night hooting to each other. Magnificent birds. Years ago I was at my cousins party in Hunterdon County where I saw 7 snowy owls all together perched on a telephone wire. It was amazing I wish I had photographed them, no camera & no cells then. I never forgot. All the snowy owls were beautiful. Nice photography!!!

I went to an inside zoo place once and in there, there was a guy who was demonstrating the wing sounds of birds. He showed us three peregrine falcon feathers and he swished them around, they were really loud, then he took a whole owl wing and did the same movement, and there was no sound. I still think it's amazing

Now it makes sense to why my mom didn’t hear the owl flying right towards her while she was outside in the yard just looking at her yard at night lol My neighbor happened to be outside working on his car across the street (he’s our neighborhood mechanic, so he’s up all night 😂) Luckily he had looked up & saw the owl flying straight to her from another neighbor’s roof & literally ran to my mom getting her attention to get down or move out of the way & he started scaring off the owl 😂 The owl hooted & went back to its roof staring at both of them. Let’s just say, she got her ass back in that house 😂😂😂

Owl hearing is not just excellent. Its magic-level hearing. They perfectly hear your fingers joints movement from the other side of the room. Capable to precisely catch mice under thick snow layer right from the flight just hearing mice movement.

One thing not mentioned about their hearing, some owls have asymmetrical ear placement (like the barn owl shown). This, in addition to the specialty feathers surrounding their face, allow them to hear in 3 dimensions exactly the same way we see in three dimensions. It is this that allows them to hunt in complete darkness when even they do not have enough light to see with.
