I bought my stepdad a DVD player for Christmas this year. He's in his 70s and has a smart TV, normally he's pretty fine with it but with his health problems now he can struggle operating it, forgetting which streaming services he's subscribed to, which email account he registered it to, etc. He's so happy now that he can just put in a DVD and watch one of his favourite movies any time without me being there to help him. And because he has the physical media he'll never have to worry about a movie changing platforms or if it's the internet's a bit wobbly (EE are rubbish...)

The thing about digital medial is that it’s never really yours. Yes, you have access to it. However, they can remove that film from the platform any time they like. Apart from YT I don't stream anything and prefer my very large collection of VHS and DVD, built up over decades. I am glad the shop in the video is doing well and hope that more will open. Well done TVL Allstar Video for continuing your trade. I miss visiting our local Hastings and St.Leonards-on-Sea (East Sussex) video tape film rentals and then the future of all rentals, DVD rental. I of course, like many contributed to the demise of these shops and BLOCKBUSTER due to postal rental of Tesco DVD and then Love Film. This was great and much cheaper. HOWERVER! BLOCKBUSTER did have the option to expand and use this the new online film format, but refused it thinking it would never work or be profitable. NETFLIX took over and prospered and became bigger than Hollywood.

That is wonderful. I remember a friend, at least 45 years ago, getting some VHS and a suitcase and going door to door renting out the tapes. This was before Blockbuster, etc. He did alright for a bit, LOL.
@thebaldscramblerАй бұрын
I lived in a housing association flat as a kid in the 80s, we had a guy come round in his estate car every Friday with a boot load of tapes, mostly movies, also some uncensored copies of films that were heavily censored/banned in the UK. He had a unique way of tooting his car horn so everyone in the flats heard it and knew it was him. We hired the tapes for a week then gave them back the following Friday. He went around all the flats and the council estates and done alright for a year or so, then Blockbuster opened up in the nearby town.

Most people don't realise how much information is being left out whilst streaming. For me, movies only come alive when watching on discs. Even though one is able to stream stereo music in Lossless quality unfortunately when it comes to movie watching unless one invests in expensive equipment streaming movies are not going to be able to be heard as the way the director intended. Lossless audio (discs) is a faithful copy of the original audio, with no degradational compression. It offers a richer sound experience then it's streaming counterpart. Hence, physical media rules

I've been saying for years that rental shops will start to resurface. Partly due to hipsters, partly because people will get tired of having to fork out for multiple streaming services, but also those people wanting to revisit movies that are only available via physical media.

@@JoeLouis-hc7mm streaming services are evolving. branching out into live events. Netflix recently acquired WWE rights, the big Tyson V Paul Boxing event. I find that with film, they often don't have the old-school titles or ask you to pay on top of the subscription price, which is a cheek, IMO. so there is hopefully a gap in the market for independent DVD rental shops to make something of a comeback.
@zappyyz636823 күн бұрын
i mean realistically you can get most streaming services for about £6 per month netflix being £4.99 per month at the cheapest tier for exclusive series and a good chunk of movies whereas renting 2-3 movies is probably more expensive and you dont get to keep it either
@monkeymanbob23 күн бұрын
@@zappyyz6368 While this is true. There is too much content. The joy of walking through the store picking up titles and discovering hidden gems is fa more difficult now days. There are a lot of movies, classics by todays standards that sunk at the box office but found life on physical media. Plus you still have the issue that not every title is available for streaming due to rights. Even if you buy a title digitally, you don't actually own it and it can be removed from your library - Apple Canada and Amazon e-books are recent examples. If you rent a movie and want it then it's on physical media - may cost more than normal for some titles, but once you have it, it's yours.

Physical Media is kind of permanent. Compared to Streaming. BUY or RENT via Streaming is a bit of a con. Because you pay BUYING price but do not own the title you'd paid to buy.

Nice job Colin. I wish I had a video store local to me. I remember going with my parents and picking out some movies (lots of horror and some action) and the experience is so much different than scrolling through streaming. The magic is kind of lost when discovering new film releases. Browsing through video boxes and reading them and conversing with others about them. Same with video games and other rental stores. In the age of mass consumption, and fast/convient living a lot was lost with high street shops becoming less relevent for media and the lean towards megacorps like the rainforest and streaming services completely taking over.

20th Century Flicks is excellent! They even have a screening room you can hire if you want. They’ve been in Bristol since the 80s, although they’ve moved shop at least once. If I lived closer to them I’d rent more than I do. Streaming promised a lot but offered a lot less, in practice. There are so many films that are just not available at all. Physical media is the way! Whole films, not edited, that you’ve got for as ‘ever’ as things can be these days.
