In 1998 when I was a young man I set up a computer business. It was completely legitimate. Had even been trading for two years before I applied for a VAT number. When I did apply for a VAT number 8 o’clock one morning as I was getting the kids ready for school HMRC turned up at my house I went through my books and up my arse with a fine tooth comb looking for discrepancies, because at the time computer businesses were big business for VAT fraud. I got a clean bill of health. I kept my books spot-on. Every invoice with a number on it and all the rest of it. Why aren’t the shops having the same treatment, by the HMRC. Today it’s very easy to see where funds are going once they get in a bank. It was very easy to trace where the rinsed money is coming out of. Why isn’t this?

"We didnt go after them because of how it would have looked". Oh wait no that was what the police said about not arresting grooming gangs. This situation these barbers will also have perfectly clean looking books. Because other than monitoring every single customer that goes in over a month and comparing it to what they claim, the books will just say they had x number of customers, and the correct amount of money in the bank, and then they pay the tax on it. There's no actual product they need to purchase from a supplier and hand it to a customer. Its haircuts, paid for in cash, if they say they cut 100 peoples hair in a day, and paid tax on that then the government don't seem to care where the money actually came from. I guarantee though, they also arent doing as much as they should because of "how it would look" that every week on the news it'd be another "Asian" criminal gang being arrested.

One notices that most of these new 'barbershops' allege to be 'Turkish', but I'm not sure how that was ever supposed to be a special recommendation. I am, however, aware of the cultural and religious associations of alleged 'Turkishness' that lead one to become a little suspicious, and that there is a strange similarity with many corner shops that also don't appear to be making much money through the till in th normal way. I'm also aware that a lot of these enterprises seem to be appearing in neighbourhoods not associated with the ethnic/cultural groups running these businesses, which then seems to lead to an increase in the presence and activities of the groups concerned - which existing residents in the areas in question might not consider particularly welcome for a variety of reasons. To misquote the introduction to TV's classic 'Star Trek', it seems to be a case of certain people seeking out new places where they're not needed, wanted or welcome - but those facts don't appear to concern them much.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, how can 18 Turkish Barber shops in one small/medium Welsh town make any money? The shops are usually empty apart from the half dozen or so staff sat in each store drinking coffee and standing outside smoking with the 'barbers' from the competitions shops, on one street there are 5 of these middle eastern barbers next door to each other, and have you seen the flash cars these lads drive, considering they never have customers they seem to be making money somehow. One more thing I have kinda been watching these shops in my town and the staff in the shops is constantly changing, the prices that are advertised on the list on the door is three times what my local barber was charging so they don't even try to be competitive on price to draw customers in, it's as if they don't want to cut your hair, or perhaps they don't want you finding out they can't cut hair 🤔. Have a business that doesn't sell a product, (except kebab), just a service. Cash transactions only. No receipts. Amount of clients can be altered to whatever amount is required. You make, for example, £3000 in haircuts per week. Your business account says you made £150,000 per week. In a town of 10,000 people? Half women. Another six barbers there as well for competition. Many of these "business owners" also have a kebab/chip/chicken/pizza takeaway shop and a nail salon. Probably a sell-everything grocery. Not necessarily in the same town. Also run a cab service, goes with the home deliveries. Phone shops too, got to have a constant supply of untraceable phones. I probably have just around the corner from me about 3 barbers and 3 kebab/takeaway shops in a small stretch of road, some even directly opposite each other. In a small Kent town. Agree. Shiny new shops spread all around town especially in quiets streets, and few customers even in the busier streets. Locals know the busy places and where say traditional confectionery shops could not possibly survive. e.g. a very large shop on the traditionally prominent shopping street where only really big and/or successful shops can work. i.e. not one selling a few bags of overpriced basic confectionery. It's a bit obvious yet the council and landlords happily go along with the plan. Why?

I got to a hairdresser run by a great guy from Jordan, he is a really nice guy, he doesn’t mind having a conversation with you or just working in silence. He provides a great service on a very busy street, on of the main streets in town but he is thinking of quitting and setting up a new hair dresser in his garage as he hasn’t been making the kind of profit he wants to make since Covid. He is simply a hair dresser, nothing going on in the back, just cutting hair, the other employees do everything else. Other businesses seem to stay open while providing a much worse service for higher prices, if that isn’t proof there’s something not right going on with them then idk what is.

I told him I wasn't having that, it's dangerous, not to mention ignorant and disrespectful. I never went back. I was in another and he pushed my head forward with the electric razor, ouch. @EsterHendrix Yeah, just been educated on some other forum, they're set up, supported by people or family members for permanent residency visas, apparently as I do not know anything about this, is that they set up these businesses, when they gain permanent residency, they sell them on to other immigrants wanting residency here, or other family members, some are bank rolled by wealthy families so they fiddle the books as far as income to show the business is buoyant, something like that, as I wrote have been past bakery shops, because of location and no access to parking would very poor in sales but they're there year after year, so it has to have some truth in it.

I was using a local Turkish barbers for around a year, as the regular 'traditional' barbers I used previously closed down due to trading difficulties. The one thing that struck me was the high turn over of staff, every time I visited, there were new faces, EVERYTIME... The traditional barbers I used to go had the same 2 familiar faces each time over many years visiting. The other thing was the clear language barrier, it seemed only the manager could speak English and he would translate for the other staff, the manager was the only familiar face each time I visited. I got quite suspicious of how many staff seemed to work there and how few actual customers there were, how could they trade successfully and legitimately? It just didn't add up... I've since I've changed to a traditional British barbers, who are much cheaper and does a better job, no language issues either! The surprising thing is now there are literally 20 or more similar barbers along the sane high street, all empty! This is a street where there used to be 3 and one closed due to 'difficult trading', it doesn't make sense how there are suddenly so many more... 😮🤔😳

I wouldn't call these Turkish barbers cheap, £20 avarage for the graders run over the sides and back and a complete fk up trimming the top, compared to my local barber, UK borne bloke gives a brilliant haircut and for a tenner.
