I’ve had a 2019 TRD Pro and a 2021 Rubicon Jeep. Ain’t no way I would trade either one for this new 4Runner. They made it like every other 4 cylinder/ hybrid car out there. There’s nothing special about it anymore. Now it has the same funky engine combinations as Jeep and Bronco. The only one I’d almost consider is the 326hp/465tq hybrid version. Because at least that one puts out some decent power numbers. The non-hybrid version puts out almost the same numbers as the 5th gen. (For me the juice isn’t worth the squeeze for the non-hybrid.) But there’s a whole laundry list of stuff I just don’t like about the new gen 4Runner. It’s too much to list. Getting rid of the manual 4WD shifter is a good example of one reason. That system just works. Every. Time. Even if somebody is new to off road 4WD vehicles, it’s not hard to learn how to put it in 4H and 4L. And the power lift gate. Really fellas? We can’t manually lift the hatch anymore? We need a button to push for that too? But getting back to the turbo+ hybrid system: There’s no getting around paying for that (much more complicated system) eventually. You can only “rob Peter to pay Paul” for so long. You kind of pay for that twice. You pay for a more complicated system off the lot. And you will pay for the more complicated maintenance/ more expensive parts back at the dealer eventually. Maybe in between you save a few mpg’s. But you will end up paying for it one way or the other. They get you coming and going. Now that I know the direction Toyota is going, I’m seriously having a look at buying another 5th gen TRD Pro. I loved my 2019. Solid, simple, key in the ignition truck. But if somebody digs the new gen, I can kinda see that. It’s cool in its own way. There’s a lot I like about it. It’s just not for me. I’m more of a do all my own maintenance, preserve, restore kinda guy. I can fix anything. But I don’t like things that are way more complicated than they need to be for marginal gains. It’s weird. I like working on things, but at the same time I don’t want to mess with it. The 5th gen was like that. I had tools to do everything. But they got dusty from never needing them.

Better run out and get a Gen5. 2026 TrdPro doesn't cut the mustard. Cargo space compromised by hybrid battery pack. Rear seats "tumble" forward and take up too much space. Rear seat occupant leg room looks tight, especially on egress. Do you really need all the "tech" when you're hitting the trail? Tried and true Gen5 just can't be beat for the true adventurer. JMHO.

I totally agree. If you’re really heading out there, 5th gen 4Runner can’t be beat. I’d have no problem driving one from Florida to Alaska and back. And any crap gas will do. This new one seems more of a body on frame trail-rated Highlander than a new 4Runner.

Been looking at 4Runners. As soon as they released the details on the 6th gen, I went to the dealer and purchased a new 2024 TRD OFF ROAD Premium the next day. I do not want the 4 cylinder turbo or a hybrid. I want something that is tried and reliable. I am sure the pricing will increase also. I got a $3000 discount on the one I bought. I know it will last me for the next 10 years or more. I really like the looks of the new one and I am sure a lot of people will rush out to buy them. I am old school and like the simplicity of the current model. It will end up costing you a lot less to maintain , even if it does use a little more gas in the long run.

Great video Jason! You guys had a great conversation about this release. I like the 6th Gen, I think the power train will be great long term, but definitely a few glaring ugly design features on both the exterior and interior. If I were to own one, that "Toyota" on the passenger dash would be removed immediately, and I believe the front bumper on all trims suffers from the same ugly fate as the current Tundra. Luckily, we have aftermarket to solve the exterior problems. I've seen some very nice aftermarket bumpers that make the new Tundra looks much better and I imagine the same will be true for the 4Runner in the near future. As a 5th gen (2014) owner, I think i'll hang on to mine for now, but I might consider a 6th gen in 4-5 years once all those lease returns start hitting dealer lots.

This new 4Runner is killing me, Smalls! I traded in my 2019 SR5 4Runner because it was uncomfortable on road trips, underpowered, and the 5000lb tow limit was on the edge of capability for a reasonably-sized RV trailer. But I loved the looks, the reliability, and the capability off-road with Bilstein 5100s and 33s. I bought a 2021 Tundra 1794 Edition and have modified it for overlanding. Same mpg as the 4Runner, incredible comfort, can tow anything I can afford, and with a Leer topper and Decked system, is great for hauling my dog and all my gear. But it is HUGE and feels like I am driving a semi-truck off-road. The new 4Runner addresses all of my issues with my 5th gen. But... That turbo 4 motor and all the new tech really has me doubting that it will be anywhere close to as bulletproof as the 5th gen. Plus, I'm sure the price is going to be insane the first year with dealers gouging customers. I'm tempted to just buy a 2024 TRD Off-Road 4Runner and be thankful that I have the last of the simpler and bulletproof 4Runners.

Wait a couple of years, then buy the 6th gen. More power, efficient 8 speed trans, power liftgate, modern interior, better mpg, etc. Its a Toyota so you know itll be reliable. They wouldn't put the 4 cyl turbo in almost all their cars and trucks if it wasn't bulletproof. They've been doing hybrids for DECADES. So, they know what they are doing there.

I was surprised that the front overhang is actually longer, after losing the length of 1 cylinder AND moving the sway bar behind the axle. The new Tacoma’s front overhang was shortened. Hmmm, or maybe the 5th 4Runner was better designed than the 3rd gen Tacoma lol

I would say so. Stock approach on a 4Runner is pretty awesome. I made mine a bit better with the CBI bumper and mild lift. It’s a smidge disappointing it got worse. I’m sure it’s fixable though. And cool fitting big tires is easier.

How did y’all miss talking about the digital gauge cluster? If Toyota did it well, that could be great when off-roading! Also like the idea of built in upgradable switches from the factory vs the Auxbeam controller sitting on the dash (though I just bought the trim piece to make it look like it’s built in). Like all new things, it takes time for people to buy into something. After all the upgrades to my 2020, I’ll be holding on to it for a long time-even at 17mpg.

Shorter cabin Hight - I like high ceiling because I am 6.2 Small windows / and windshield no acrostic windshield offer . No -Front Hood Lift Support , its a stick . Viper cut for approach is good but small size fog lights ,its Rigid industry led but these are not big Gear shifter is too big , it can be highlander size . rear passenger seats does not flat on the floor .
