These dogs are tense and high-strung on walks, but dog training expert Victoria Stilwell suspects this may have more to do with the owners and the atmosphere they create than the dogs themselves.

The small dogs need the same stimulus as the bigger ones! Walks are not just for getting rid of energy. it is for scenting the environment and exploring. I hate it when people say that small dogs don't need walking. Let your dog be a dog and let them know more than your backyard. Preferably three times a DAY.
@Profetie
@Profetie 4 жыл бұрын
I feel sorry for these dogs, imagine being stuck inside a home or backyard and only going out twice a week. Any dog needs stimulation to be happy. Sure, not all dogs will have issues like the dogs in this video, but that doesn't mean that it is okay not to be walked. Frankly, walking a dog three times a day should be the minimum you are committed to do when you get a dog. Otherwise, don't get one.

@@Mak1Attack1 I know this is an old comment, but that's a terrier or at least a mix. If she isn't grounded and leaning back against the pulling dog then it probably can pull her forward. Unless she's been actually working on walking that dog then it can probably pull her over. My Terrier mix weighs almost 35-40 pounds (She is a mix and her housemate is terminal so she gets his food.) and even at 25 pounds, she could knock me over if I wasn't expecting it. Not saying that a larger dog isn't more of a task, but terriers are pure mussel and she doesn't look all that strong.

@@krismoore6754 I know they exist, I myself have been in the process of getting diagnosed with one for the last 8 years or so. To be clear, I don't mean any of this in an inflammatory way. It's admirable that you take such things into consideration, such thought is rarely offered to people like us, but she was just frustrated. We can see in the clip that she maintained control over the dog and wasn't visibly yanked forward. That in of itself proves that Cookie wasn't 'overwhelming' or 'unmanageable' like I stated in my initial comment. I skimmed back through the whole video and from what I saw, she never once visibly struggled with or lost control over the dog, even when the dog was reared up onto two legs lunging. Even if we assume her condition varied day to day, in the moment she complained, we could see her level of physical strain. Victoria herself addresses in the next sentence that she was just expressing frustration.

This is a really good example of 2 dogs that were making each other's reactivity worse. I think Daisy had less socialization with other dogs and didn't know how to react, but any noise from Cookie sprung her back into the old habit. So interesting!

I really wish that people understood that, for dogs, your house is their world. The only time they get to see the world outside of your house is when you let them out or walk them. Most of these people could not survive being stuck inside of their house with no outside contact for as long as their dog. I think the current events are giving a people an inkling of an understanding as to what dogs go through, and even then dogs don't have internet to talk to or videos to watch. Even then, a dog will spend their entire life like this. It really is unbelievably cruel to make excuses to not walk a dog.

I agree, dogs are intensely social animals and I think the relatively recent way of keeping them constantly confined indoors is really detrimental and why we see so many issues with them. Street dogs have a such richer life, and I understand why it’s not possible for them to live that way any more in many countries people should make much more effort to give them enrichment rather than shutting them indoors alone for 8 hours plus whilst they go out to work. If that’s your situation don’t get a dog! I grew up when mothers stayed at home and dogs wandered the neighbourhood, and they were so much more mentally stable.

I’ve taken treats on walks before but my dog has never shown any interest in treats when he is on a walk or at the dog park. However, he has been pretty good at listening on his walks. I’m glad too, or I wouldn’t know how to get him to focus on what he is supposed to do on a walk.

I think a lot of these comments about the owners are a bit harsh. Clearly, they care about their dogs, just the fact that they called Victoria illustrates this. As far as Hanna goes, she was probably very nervous. I’m sure having this filmed, trying a new technique, saying she had the bad dog was just nervous chatter. After the second follow up, she really practiced with the dog and things improved. But for the dog owners who are *perfect* that’s not going to cut it for them. Thank you for all the owners who put themselves out there for the rest of us to learn, in spite of the negative comments they know they will see.

Animals do understand and react when you are verbal negative and physical negative towards them. I would not be shocked that she had done same thing away from camera as she had done in front of camera towards her dogs. Dogs needs socialization and behavior training from puppy age with other animals and other people.

We’ve just rescued a Jack Russell and she’s like this one x1000. I’ve tried this technique but it’s not working for me. She will follow me around the house and sit on command but as soon as she’s outside she ignores me completely. I can dangle chicken in front of her and I will get her attention and I’ve tried this when other dogs approach. I will hold her gaze for a while with the chicken and then she’ll see the other dog and no amount of chicken will get her attention after that. I’ve done what you said and got her attention as soon as she sees the dog but she’s almost like: “as soon as I get this chicken I’m going after that dog” and sure enough she does. No amount of treats will then bring her back. The rest of the walk is then a pull all the way home with her front paws not even touching the floor. It’s looking like she will be returned if the situation doesn’t improve.
