I can't believe it has been just over a year since my Mini JCW Clubman entered my life. It's time for her first service so let me update you on how the year has been and at the same time I needed to get something off my chest !

Totally understand the JCW argument, I’ve got a Cooper S and although it’s running a lot more power than a FJCW thanks to Lohen, it still isn’t one. I refuse to put anything JCW on my mini (styling wise).

When my wife had a Cooper S back in 09 we looked at the JCW styling pack for it as it does look good. On researching the insurance side it was going to cost around 200 quid more for having it on!!....didnt bother.

@@davidoliver7977 madness isn’t it, especially because they came as a factory option for the aero kit. I’ve just left mine looking standard and messed with engine. Full mods declared though.

@@tompritchard2135 From factory was the way to go and it was a close decision, but her indoors was content in the end with the upgraded exhaust tips in silver, which made a difference to the look. It was the auto too which she wanted and to be fair was not a bad drive and if I remember had a kind of overboost for a second or 3 under hard acceleration...happy days loved it. On my 50th she kindly used the part ex of it to buy me a 997 Carrera S which was a lovely surprise as she loved that mini. As I always say she's worth avin lol.

Honestly you can do so much with these minis, I’ve got a different exhaust system on mine now and it’s a much better tone than standard, but not massively loud. 0-60 I’ve timed at 5.3 with the modifications that I’ve done to the mini. That’s a nice surprise isn’t it! How did the Porsche feel compared? I know a few people who have had a Porsche and they love it, but they said the mini was a bit more fun!

Interesting rant. It’s actually called a Cooper Sport that included a styling pack like different style bumpers etc. The JCW idea started way back in the 90’s with engine tweaks and styling packs etc. The Fiesta ST Line looks exactly like the ST at a distance but without the power Agree about not letting a dealer clean the MINI. We were put off when we saw them jet washing the cloths on a gravel ridden surface 😩

I stopped having my car cleaned when being serviced when a few years back I got my car back with a badly scratched windscreen. Still pisses me off just thinking about it.

Had the same experience years ago with a Merc, and since then (although they repaired it) never had a car cleaned on a service. Its usually a quick power wash anyway and that is where the issue came as they took a chunk out of the bonnet. and it also looked as though they had dropped the shammy and the grit was evident in the scratches all over. I guess they have to be so quick washing them so no respect given to the product.

I agree. JCW is and has always been a tuning/performance option. From the 60s till now, a paint job doesn't count as JCW in my mind. Anyway congrats on 1yr for Charlie. My Cooper SE (electric in the UK) has just hit the 6 month milestone. Nothing has gone wrong, and I still love it. To be honest I don't use the pill style display much, as the head up display has everything I need. I suppose I use it to check out the instantaneous power consumption, but that is about all. Good luck with the service pack, had a negative experience with mine. First, they only do what the car says - one service, I was literally driving home and the service light came on for the next item. I thought they'd forgotten to reset, but no, it was another service the next week. They also found 'extras' like brake fluid that got added to the bill. The final straw was missing the service window during lockdown and having to pay for the last service on the pack anyway; apparently I should have phoned in when it was due, even though the car sat for the best part of six months unused. Wouldn't buy it again.

I have a 2019 Countryman JCW (so look forward to your future review) and have to say i agree with your comments on the JCW styling pack. Not really an issue for me living in Australia as they don't offer the JCW styling pack option (nor the Mini ONE either).

The cost of main dealer servicing is unbelievable. They seduce you with an easy way to pay, with generous looking discounts! However, it is all about the sacred warranty, which is still only 3 years and 60k on all German manufacturers. Take at look at Korean warranties typically 5/7 years and 100k. Who has the most faith in their products? ( I drive a Jag E Pace, and they are just as bad!)

If your driving a JCW then Yes, you ought to be driving a JCW but it's like the Original Mini Cooper S, there only was ever a few made! Mine was a 1071 S and nothing can make me think anything built since us as good nor could they be!!!

I have a Cooper S with the JCW factory body kit. I think its fine to have the small JCW badges on the wheels and steering wheel but I would never want to replace the Cooper S badges on the scuttles and rear. Then you're pretending to be something you're not. Mini enthusiasts know that it is an S with a kit on it. Its no different to a 320d M Sport with a kit or the M badge on the wheel. Everyone knows it's not an M3.

Being a Mini owner for many years I totally agree with your minor rant, but I guess they sell a whole lot more cars when visually branded JCW. The new 2021 F56 styling pack even has the JCW badge on the front grill - That's a step too far!

It's really interesting you bring this JCW issue up! On the new LCI MINI Hatches, you get a full-on PROPER JCW badge on the front grille even if it is just Sport trim (doesn't have to be Cooper S either). I agree that it devalues the JCW engined models, but then again, I like the JCW styling being available across the range. Perhaps a different JCW-lite sub-brand should be used.

I agree, putting JCW on a non JCW car devalues the JCW 'brand'. They could call it 'Cooper Works Line' or something. Analog dials for me every time, I love my iPad but don't want to operate or look at one one while i'm driving. Same reason I don't like Apple Car Play. What a surprise, car goes to a dealer for a service and brake pads 60-70% worn, or alternatively there is 40-30% remaining.

Got a JCW 2018 Convertible, , completely agree the JCW brand denigration , its just wrong! Other car 30.s F Type .... prefer the Mini... to drive anyway . Don’t mean to sound cynical, BUT, all of these brands adding badges ARE just milking the badge. John Cooper has been nowhere near Charlie Clubman, they put badges on, some styling differences and remap the engine. It’s the simplest thing to create ‘value’ they could do. If we think AMG are really not Merc we’re dreaming... same cars, few bits n bobs, charge more. Hear the fanboys up in arms - seriously, you can’t change the dampers and load some stuff from a laptop and claim it’s completely different. If we think SVO make the JLR’s we’re dreaming. They slap a badge on a production line car, charge more and that’s it. If we actually believe the JCW badges mean anything to BMW beyond a few quid we’re dreaming. The fact you can buy a much cheaper Clubman Cooper that looks and feels identical to a JCW one, minus a few BHP tells you that. The whole set up for all of these are factory made cars, mass produced alongside each other with different vents and badges. I suppose the Abarth isn’t a Fiat 500 with a rasp 🤣🤣 Oh my, we are taken in aren’t we 😆

Agree pp with your rant. Car looks fab but those flaps!! Nono! Wanted to get a jcw clubman but to dear compaired what i paid for my Insignia GSI estate. To get same spec and year 5k difference! Have you driven an insignia GSI estate? A lot of car for a 18 month car a tad over 21k when cost new 43k! Keep up the good work Pete. Wow £50 per month! My MR2 gets its service plan & MOTs for less than £17 per month at my local Toyota main dealer. Looks like a BMW rip-off to me! + I get to drive a desirable car.

I have had exactly that rant at a friend whos bought a cooper JCW clubman. And he calls it a JCW so he can pretend he has the sporty model. (He may do out deliberately to get a black adder darling eye twitch out if me as an f56 JCW owner) The old cars there wasn't as larger gulf in performance (1-2seconds max) but when there is a 5-6 second difference in the JCW to cooper it does devalue the brand name but hey if it acts as a cash cow so they can make like the mini gp3s then who are we to complain!

My 2 pence worth on the whole debate of jcw, I'm not a mini expert, and I thought back in the day that Cooper was meant to be the 'sporty' part of mini, I know now that jcw is the flagship sport brand so what they could have done is made mini cooper be the one that has the sporty styling without the performance, but they all seem to have Cooper on them, even the diesel, you also have Cooper s, gets a bit confusing to be honest.

Ped never let a dealer clean your car especially if it's ceramic coated I've lost count of the number of people who have had paint trashed by dealer washes. They will use any scabby old sponge they have lying around and it certainly will not be a proper 2 bucket washed that a detailler will instruct you to use after ceramic coating. Speak to your detailler about keeping the coating in tip top condition. Lucky escape really

I don’t like these long service intervals, its expecting too much from the oil. Car manufacturers don’t care if the engine wears prematurely, much like the auto gearbox sealed for life, no gearbox oil change myth - its sealed for the life that the manufacturer is interested in the car. I tend to do an interim engine oil change to protect the timing chain if nothing else with these extended service intervals. A few litres of oil and a filter mid interval is a cheap insurance policy.

You don’t need to have your MINI serviced by a main dealer to keep the warranty intact. It’s called “Block Exemption”.

I´ve had a bit of a discussion on the German Mini sites regarding the identity of the Mini of today: Ja warum denn nicht? Der neue Anglo Saxon aus Sachsen! Könnte kaum besser sein! Aufwiedersehen Golf! (hope the German is no problem). It is also worth remembering that the very first BMW was in fact a Mini (of sorts) being an Austin 7 (from the 30´s). Even the Germans seem unaware of this historical fact that brings the two makes closer together! Any comments on this?

I have been lucky to own a number of MINIs. I absolutely love my MINI Countryman Cooper S, coming from two Clubmans (Cooper S and JCW) they are different. I would have stayed with the Clubman but I found the barn doors a pain in the arse, a hatch would be better for this model. Try both models out for size before committing.

Every time I see a mini with the new digital display it looks like someone has taken the display off a BMW R1250GS motorbike!! The displays look the same although what appears on them is different. They look like the same display and casing.

Hi Pete concerning the JCW argument, I understand where you're coming from I bought a Cooper S just before first lockdown it was my first Mini so not a connoisseur, I loved the styling kit not knowing it was JCW until I sat in it and saw the badge on the steering wheel. I was disappointed at first because I didn't want it to look like it's trying to be something it's not in the same way as teenagers used to make standard escorts look like an XR3i. When I realised it was more about styling options I accepted it, I love the JCW spoiler and that's the only extra on the exterior the interior is standard Cooper S but it has the JCW steering wheel which looks great but I would prefer if it didn't have JCW badge on it, at least there's no badging on the exterior. I did find your comments interesting especially knowing that you have put rally mud flaps on a car that as far as I am aware they do not rally😉

Hi Ped. Agreed about the JCW usage, should only be for an actual JCW. Weirdly, Mini my car was in the main dealers last week for an MOT and they did wash it. I asked them about the rally spots too, but once I learnt they wanted £700 fitted i decided against it!!. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask :-)

Completely agree re: the JCW John Cooper (you) Wish branding on standard cars. I can understand that people perhaps want a sportier looking car than the standard model, but are perhaps not bothered by the lower power, but there should be distinctly different branding. I even feel that S-Line and M-Sport are too close to their high end brands and then you find that people who buy their 120d M-Sport, but a fake M badge off e-bay to pretend that they have a sportier model. There's a new 1 series with M-Sport styling around here and that is exactly what's happened. Not only are the fake badges usually the wrong size, but they fade in the sunlight as well, to end up looking truly awful. Anyway, as you can probably tell from this and previous posts, I really don't like the fake M badge thing. I even don't think that my car (M340i) should have an M attached, as it's not an M car. It's just a fast, sporty beemer and should simply be called the 340i.

Thanks to EU rules you do not need to service your car at a main dealer to maintain the warranty. You can do so servicing it at a specialist dealer and often get better service at a cheaper price.

Picked up my 2020 Clubman JCW yesterday. It’s quite quick! Same colour as yours but without stripes. I think I may have a couple of subtle red lines added. My only gripe was when I came to tax it. Ouch. That’s was not expected. I didn’t even know there was a £40k cliff edge. Who knows the original list price of a car and the dealers don’t tell you so be warned if it’s fully loaded with extras.

You had a lucky escape! I never let the dealer wash my car as they probably use an automatic car wash and a sponge! Protect your car paintwork and wash it at home yourself using the two bucket method!

I just don`t get this servicing at the dealers while under warranty? You no longer have to..! At a fraction of the cost, using manufactures parts with receipt any local service centre can change the oil and filter! (plus brake fluid next time) the value of a car is only affected if you miss a service or its not done as per recommendations in the service schedule..

You don’t have to have a car serviced by a main dealer to maintain its warranty. Can be undertaken by an independent garage, so long as it’s undertaken in accordance with the manufactures specification.

Your service plan might seem cheap, but I had an R55 Clubman and the plan for that was £150 for 5 years servicing (though my plan excluded brake fluid changes).

Quite agree with service plan idea, I done the same thing on my car it's now covered servicing and parts plus two MOTs when It reaches 3 years old all in the monthly fee !😊😊👍

Totally agree with you , bit of a badging exercise which devalues the ethos of the proper jcw .Bit like the mini hatch challenge 210 and a proper Jcw .
