Once you have GSD you will never want another breed. They are awesome! I have male Rex, he is almost 12 and has a hip problem. It is so sad to see him getting older and loosing his mobility...If one day he needs to be carried around, I will do it. Just to pay him back for his endless love and kindness to me. I love you too, buddy ❤

That's awesome! I have seen trouble arise when multiple females of intense working breeds occupy one home/territory, but it isn't inevitable. I intend to add a little sister to my now 2 year old male, but once he is a settled adult 5-6 years or so.

I had to wipe my little guys bum when he had bad diarrhea, and I didn't mind at all, he takes care of me by getting me out and exercising, not judging my bass playing, keeping me company on long drives, being a social lubricant (I met 20+ new neighbors the first two weeks after he arrived!), and his unconditional love. I do everything I can for him, ALL of you know how far we go for our Sheps once we're really bonded. I've had lots of dogs from Goldens and Bassets to a Pitbull Terrier, and there is a whole deeper level with a GSD. I'm not saying only them, but it's definitely rare.

Years ago, my oldest brother had two German Shepherds, Rebel and Brandy. They were brother and sister and big. Rebel weighed well over 100 pounds and Brandy weighed almost as much. We babied them their whole life. They were very protective of my brother's two granddaughters. If the two little girls were in the yard with the dogs, if anyone drove up the dogs didn't know, they would get in front of the two girls and sit there, or stand there, and smile at you. They would not bark. They wouldn't growl or bare their teeth, or anything aggressive. They'd just smile at you. But if you have a functional brain and value your life, you would not come any closer. And they were the same way with me. I was their favorite uncle. If they were out in the yard with me and someone came up they did not know, they'd get in front of me and smile at that person. Some people are so stupid, they don't recognize that smile as a "warning shot". We never taught them to be that way. They were really, very, very gentle. Their vet used to tell us they were the gentlest German Shepherds they had ever seen. I'd always help my brother take them to the vet, and the dogs always behaved very well. They were smart. And after Rebel and Brandy died, we got wolves.

My eldest sister introduced me to the GSD back in the 60s. I had wanted one of my own ever since. I did rescue 2 girls from the pound. One was half GSD and Chow Chow, the other half GSD and Malamute. Both were amazing! I met my husband when the girls were about 7 and he had a long haired LARGE GSD (over 150#) who matted so badly it was awful. She was jealous of me so I could not groom her. All 3 girls were spayed and all three lived 13 years. We then got a gorgeous female, spayed her and did not socialize her with other dogs. Huge mistake! She was diagnosed with MS and was gone 2 years later at 9. We were given a Wonderful male which we have not neutered due to growth issues since he had huge paws and large parents. He's nearly 4 now and an incredible guy! We socialized him and about 9 months ago added a female which we have not spayed. Since they are both Very Good kiddos, we have decided to breed them. She is papered, but we opted out of his registration papers. I've been that route before and the papering means nothing to me because there is no follow through with the AKC. They don't require any info about the dogs. Just the breeding but if there is anything wrong with them, they would never know. They don't contact a vet for any health problems, nor do they check even a photo of the dogs they paper. The only AKC registered dog I ever had before was a Dobie who had mange and had to be euthanized at 3 years old. It broke my heart and I avoided purebreds until I married my husband who had never been without a GSD in his entire life. One thing no one brings up is that their natural scent is very, very pleasant. As a Vet Tech in the 70s I learned a lot about smelly breeds. The GSD is NOT smelly!

Thank you for this information. We adopted a beautiful white GSD from the local rescue in June. This boy was a 'pandemic puppy' and in an apartment. The owners had to give him up or else get evicted because he barked incessantly. We immediately took this 12 month old and hired an expert trainer. He has much energy and is now on a 30 foot leash. So glad we went through training which trained us! After 3 months of having him, we are delighted that he is friendly with other dogs and with friends. Highly socialized! He is a treasure!

I have owned many dogs but my German Shepherds are my favorite. My first shepherd puppy was a male who was unbelievably smart, loyal, loving and funny. He could read my mind and multitask. One thing to remember is that an owner should not leave a German Shepherd for any major length of time because this throws them off, even if they know the dog sitter well. Having a backyard that is not big is OK if you take them to a park and walk them several times a day to burn off the energy and train them.

I've been around German Shepherds my whole life and I can say that without a doubt the biggest problem is the shedding. Oh god, the shedding. You could make an entirely new dog out of the tufts of fur you'll find in the dark corners of your home. If you don't groom them regularly the inside of your house will soon look like some kind of nightmarish Lovecraftian hair-world. They can also be quite neurotic, especially if they aren't confident in your leadership. I highly recommend going to dog handling classes before you get a GSD. In fact, I'd recommend dog handling classes before you get any dog, but that goes double for a German Shepherd. The best part is they're very cuddly and they won't mind you using them as a foot warmer in winter. It's like having a big fluffy electric heater under the blanket that occasionally slobbers on you.

I have a GSD, was given to me by my daughter who had received her as a gift from a friend breeder. My daughter had a black lab also. She was moving into a crowded place, so mom is the choice to the rescue. I really was apprehensive, as my patience for animals bathroom going on the floor and knew I would not keep her if messes were the future. She was trained from the beginning. Kennel trained, she would prefer to lay in her kennel, always with the door open. I only had to say one word commands and she was perfect at following that command. I did a bit of research. I didn't like the hair puddles, so eventually after a few years, now I trim her with a set of clippers. That hair mess was the only problem I had to solve. Giving a haircut with a pair of clippers was easy. She stands still for the task. She is so loyal and loving. Figuring out how to remedy the nickname American shedder made her the most perfect dog to have for me. She has never pooped or peed on the floor. She even knows how to tell me when she is hungry. She will guide me to what she wants. She is much like a toddler who just wants to please. She has gotten an upset stomach before that is about as bad as it has been since I have learned to trim her hair. I don't think I could handle a breed that wasn't as intelligent as this. What a loving great dog.

Layla my 4yo is an angel. She doesn't have a bad bone in her body, unless you're a fox or a rabbit; we're on 10 acers. I would not think about getting a GSD unless I was on land. The protectiveness is hard wired - they have a job and it's our job to support them - there are NO negotiations in this regard. I'm glad they live so long as it tears my heart out of not waking to see her at my bedroom door each morning, tail wagging ready to go. GSD's are a gift, they are not a toy

I don’t think many people know how much shredding they’re capable of doing. They love teething on furniture but so may people don’t want to discipline and stay on task of watching them just as a toddler. So many wouldn’t have to end up in the shelter if people put in the time as a puppy. The shelters should also set up education before allowing to be taken

She can be completely off leash, and even inside the house she will walk with me in a heel position, and I never taught her that and I know nobody else did because she was tied up outside alone, her whole life before I got her she even had to be completely shaved before the transporter would drop her off to me because of how many knots she had.

You omit one important fact: there are two quite different lines of GSD, the showline and workline. They are like two different breeds really. Workline GSD are more goal oriented, active and intense, athletic, compact and do not shed much at all as they have shorter hair. They also have much less health problems as they are square hipped, not with sickly sloping backs like the showline GSD. They do require more attention and activity as they have been bred for work, not dog shows.

Well, you hit the nail on the head with this video, everything you say is true. I have 2 czech GSD's a male and female. They costed 2500 bucks each. But worth it in my opinion. They are great dogs and super smart, I would venture to say the smartest dogs in the world. Why? Because they remember commands long after you quit using them, where other breeds forget. I had a poodle which is a great dog as well but won't protect you if things go wrong. My cousin has a border collie who is very smart, but won't protect him, but my GSD is just as smart. Exercise boredom, all the things you said were right on. My dogs are very affectionate they will crawl in the bed with me after I get to sleep because they know I won't let them sleep with me, but I still wake up snuggled to them lol. I want my dogs to live a long life, so I feed them diamond natural dog food and i mix in raw meat like chicken or turkey. Mixed in twice a week I mix in a can of sardines for each dog and I feed them a raw egg several times a week. They really do need exercise, that is for sure. I have to play ball with mine twice a day for around 20 minutes, and I take them for walks in the woods a couple of times a week. If I don't do this, they get board and get into trouble. They are very loyal very affectionate and make great guard dogs, they let me know if they hear anything outside they are very alert. Bottom line for me these are perfect for me and my needs, I will probably always own a GSD from now until I die.

I have recently adopted a female German Shepherd I believe to be around 1 to 2 years old .When she came to me she was so covered in ticks that she would have surely died within days. She was skinny and pale looking but within a week or so we got all the ticks and fleas removed and she started eating and now she is Beautiful and an asset to me and and I can't imagine being without her. She is the smartest animal I've ever had the pleasure of being around. A few nights ago we went for a walk I was on my bike and she couldn't figure that out she would smell something and she would take off and caused me to crash . The first crash she pulled her head through her caller and I remained cool because I new she would most likely take off so I remained calm and so did she she surpingly stayed by my side. We made it a few more blocks before she did it again this time in the Middle of mainsteet still I remained calm and so did she never leaving my side . Most of the things I've read about the bread is opisit of her she is so smart. I walked the other day and she was laying on a news paper heading at the top just like she was reading it. I can't imagine being without her she is by my side every step I make.

Some of the information presented here is misleading or not given in context. I grew up with a German shepherd. I was dogless most of my adult life simply because I couldn't give a dog the time and attention needed. When I retired in 2014 I got a GSD 11-week old male puppy from a reputable GSD breeder. Yes, GSDs shed ALL THE TIME! Yes, they are very intelligent. Are GSDs expensive as reported here? A GSD can cost $1000. I paid $800 for my dog and got papers with him. However, if one compares the cost of a GSD with other breeds advertised, they aren't as spendy as some. Even before French bulldogs were named the most popular breed recently by the AKC, Frenchies the last few years were advertised for THOUSANDS of dollars. Ditto with "Doodles" (i.e., Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, etc.) (which is shocking considering Doodles are not a recognized breed). As far as exercise requirements, there seems to be various opinions on whether a GSD needs a lot of exercise or moderate exercise. The AKC describes the GSD as an active, athletic breed. Doesn't say how much exercise the typical GSD needs (and a lot of that would depend on the individual dog). I've seen other opinions that GSDs, being one of the smartest breeds, need more mental stimulation than physical exercise. I try to do some form of physical activity with my dog almost every day--either a three-mile walk, which he loves because he likes to use his nose, or throwing 100 balls (he gets periodic breaks!) for him. I don't think one needs a huge yard (my lot is 50 X 88, so not as big as a standard city lot) to have a GSD. I think a GSD could possibly be OK in an apartment if the owner was committed to making sure the dog had enough physical and mental stimulation to keep it happy. Furthermore, since I got my dog, I've learned there are different "lines" of GSDs--American show lines, East German working lines, West German working lines, and Czech working lines. From what I understand, American show lines (my dog) are more laid back while the working lines have more of a drive with those dogs need more mental and physical stimulation. In fact, it's my understanding that most U.S. police departments use GSDs from the working lines and often import them from Europe. The statement that GSDs are "OVERLY protective" is misleading. GSDs are not Golden Retrievers--GSDs are selective as to whom they'll give their affection. Like any dog, a GSD needs to be properly socialized to other dogs and people. My breeder emphasized this. I sometimes joke that my dog must be part Golden Retriever because he likes meeting new people. When I walk him, some people will cross to the other side of the street simply because of the reputation GSDs have but others often ask if they can pet him. My dog loves it--in fact, once the attention is no longer on him (if the other person and I chat for a few minutes), my dog gets bored and often lies down. He is rather leery of young kids, probably because they're noisy and unpredictable. He is protective of his yard--will bark at other dogs passing by (not people, though). Even though my dog is friendly to people, I am sure he would protect me if I needed it. Re health issues. . .I think that was also misleading. All breeds have issues common for that breed. For GSDs a couple of well known potential health issues are bloat and hip displasia. Large breeds are prone to hip displasia and deep chested dogs are prone to bloat. My dog turned nine in February and thus far he's not had any health issues other than panosteitis (bone inflammation), which is common in male GSD puppies. There's no definitive cause or cure but pain meds are prescribed when there is a flare up. It's described as "self-limiting" and usually doesn't occur beyond age 2. My dog had several flares, starting around five months and his last one was right around his second birthday. Anyone who decides to get a GSD should take some basic obedience classes. That's a good idea for any dog but especially for a large breed.

Proud gsd parent, there's no bad or ugly, literally no down side. My girl only barks on command or if she perceives a threat, you'd never know she was there. She is INCREDIBLE! Observant, loyal, devoted, loving, goofy, playful, gentle and brave. She would lay her life down for me and I would for her. They are the best friend you'll ever have. I will add though, that they do need exercise, mental and physical, at least 2 hours of work a day, a bored German shepherd will rip up your house 😂🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ Winter time can be a challenge when it's too cold to go outside, but this is a good time to learn new tricks indoors. You MUST treat them with love and as a part of the family, and never mistreat them (as with any dog of course) and teach your children about respecting them and their boundaries. GSDs do not tolerate mistreatment (meaning, yes, they will mess you up. These dogs embody 'mess around and find out) and rehabilitation for them is very difficult, they are prone to separation anxiety and they are very emotional dogs, so going through shelters/foster homes really messes them up and unfortunately alot of them get put down because humans are stupid. If you can't handle it, DO NOT GET ONE! They are amazing dogs, and they will be content to live in a box as long as they are with people they love. We don't deserve them💜🐶

Also, the aggression thing is a myth. Reactive does NOT mean aggressive, and these are things, as stated in the video, that can be corrected with proper socializing. They're not death machines, they're just good doggos🥰

Every point made here is true... however, and thankfully, my GSD doesn't do enough barking to be a problem. There are times I wish he could bark aggressively on command. At least once per week he receives unsolicited compliments while on our daily walk; he's definitely beautiful. I had one GSD in the 70s, one in the 80s, and hated the loss so much, it wasn't until a wonderful opportunity came to me in the 2020s that I have my wunderhund again! Best god breed ever.

@@eddiemanzani9365 Yes. THIS is the only issue I'm having with my 4 month old male pup. He goes for my hands, feet and ankles and I've come close to reacting physically but I have NOT. I have bandages n my hands an train, train, train even in the middle of the road. I read elsewhere that it's important that ;owner' try to deliver treats between two fingers rather than open palm all the time so that the puppy can learn to "lick" the treat as opposed to bite the entire hand. We are slowly getting this issue under control but YES he's a puppy and when over stimulated or over tired, bites much harder than he realizes.

@@truecynic1270 Yeah it is a pretty big issue but she mostly bites at clothes now and tries to get me to play but sometimes she gets more than my clothes and pinches my skin and it hurts like hell but she hasnt drawn blood. We are about to pick up a female GSD / Yellow Lab Mix. She was found by Animal Control as a stray, undernourished, and very scared. When I saw her at the Shelter, I fell in love with the poor thing. They did the CAT Test and she passed with flying Colors. In the outdoor area, she was very curious about her surroundings, and wanted t sniff everything. She did come to me when I called her, and the Staff were amazed. They told me I was the ONLY Man she has ever come to. My wife is our Counties' 4H Dog Club Leader, and we have access to the County Fairgrounds indoor Horse Arena to exercise her and let her run. At this point in time, she is VERY shy and timid, and her Age is estimated at 2-3 Years. She is VERY snuggly with people she knows at the Shelter, and she DID Warm up to me in about 15 Minutes. She was JUST Spayed Last Week, so I can't bring her home until tomorrow. Though I have never owned a GSD before, I have been around many, and I have seen Gentle AND aggressive ones. THIS Girl is 10 out of 10 Gentle, and I think its the Yellow Lab in her that's responsible for this. Except for the Ears which DO Droop like a Lab, she looks like a BLONDE German Shepherd. She is absolutely GORGEOUS, and I can't WAIT to get my "PAWS" on her tomorrow!

I’ve had my GSD for almost 4 years. Got him when he was a pup. I know that every GSD is different, but mine doesn’t match some of what was discussed here. He seldom barks and he’s not hostile to anyone unless he perceives them as a threat. He’s also not destructive. One thing in this video that is spot-on is that he needs a LOT of exercise and attention or he’ll go stir crazy. He doesn’t have any health issues but he is a picky eater and his stomach is easily upset. He’s a wonderful companion and the best dog I’ve ever owned.

Sabrina is a very loving dog she was easy to train..My experence has been females tend to stay in the yard better than males ( I did not neuter the males though). I would highly reccomend one, provided you have enough space for them they are high energy dogs and love to run and play.

This is true. I have a 40% GSD. I live in an apt. To counter this, I take my pup mountain biking, trail running, hiking/walking for hours multiple days of the week. She will bark at people to "protect me" when my back is turned. Other than that shes quiet as a mouse and does well off leash in open spaces/short leash in crowds. Everything is a job with structure, constant mental games like "find the toy" and she will watch me form a doorway waiting for commands. Only negative ... Ball throws until the early morning on low exercise days. Definitely not for first time owners, but they are amazing if people are willing to put in the time.

I own a Sensational GSD . He is from a Fabulous Breeder here in Australia 🇦🇺. Just over 1yrs old by 3 weeks. Fabulous with people. His obedience training has been going extremely well since 6.5 weeks old when l took him home 🏡. I live next door 2 the Breeder. So l would have him during the day & "Shadow" would go back 2 his mum & siblings during the evening. Worked out very good as it was a gentle transition 4 him . Only 4/5 nites . He does bark at the very very Occasional Stranger . Terrific with Children. He gets walked & training every day 3/4 & some times ⏲️ ×5 . 3 or 4 short walks & one longer one . He has lots of play time ⏲️ & l take him off lead about ×2/3 times a week . So very fortunate 2 own such a wonderfull companion.

We have a 10y old GSD. Smart, loyal to the fault and beautiful dog. We spent lot of time when he was young on work trough play and proper training. We live in 80m2 apartment and he never destroyed anything. But with age he did slow down a bit. There are days he can't physically do very long walks and needs more rests while outside. He is still playful and makes us laugh. Also, having him as a companion helped my dad great deal trough some hard times. Properly trained and socialized, they are magnificent breed of dogs. Ours is mix of East German working line and West German show line, plus he was only pup in the litter, so is unusually large for GSD, but no genetic health problems.

I am lucky in that I inherited my new favorite girl because of my son's circumstances. My son moved in with his girlfriend who already had a dog (a corgi, a breed I absolutely love). My own corgi had passed on a few years before and the pain I experienced convinced me I couldn't go through that again. Then my son asked me to take River. Such a sweet girl. I met her when she was a puppy and my son was living alone. Then he entered his relationship and I ended up accepting River as my own. I'm just a dog person. After a difficult first year or two (I worked in an office and had to leave her alone at home and ultimately crate her due to the destruction she was causing), she is my perfect companion. I work from home now and neither her nor I are ever alone. She is perfect for me in that she's the rare GS who is amazingly submissive, quiet, and reasonably low-energy. She is all mine now and sleeps with me every night (oh, did I not mention I was a single dad and after my son grew up still single?). She's an amazing companion and I'll always be there for her like she is there for me.

I thought my husband's dog (border collie I got him almost 3 years ago) was goofy because he likes to sneak his nose in the shower while I'm there. this was until we got a puppy for me. she figured that what husband's dog does is not enough to ensure my safety, so she waltzed right into the shower and does a perimeter check around my legs lol Funniest thing was when hubby told me how german Shepherds are herd dogs just as much as border collies. I told him no they're not, so he reminded me that's the reason the word shepherd is in their names. I reminded him of my first language growing up, then told him how to say German Shepherd in it. First word out of my mouth was the word shepherd lol. We then laughed at how I had never noticed it before. yup, he won this argument

Our family adopted a mix. GS and Norwegian Elkhound. He is a smaller mid sized dog but he is a hand full none the less. Great dog, but he is loud and persistent. Not an apartment dog unless you want flaming rocks and hate mail crashing through your window. We got him a bit older than I would have liked so he wasn't socialized enough. He lived in a stall in an Amish barn and we think he was the runt and possibly abused. Dozer has bonded with us and our other two elder dogs but is leary of strangers. He seems broken but we keep trying and he is getting better or I'm just adapting. Never piss him off as he comes on with the hurricane force of a honey badger on a caffeine peak. To tell the truth, I wouldn't have it any other way! Sweet, gentle and protective. Side note, he really dislikes people with really big beards.
