12:50 Learn more about oxalates!
Today we’re going to look at the interesting similarities between gout and kidney stones and natural alternatives for these concerns.
Oxalates are involved in both kidney stones and gout. People who have high oxalates in their urine tend to have a worsening gout situation, and the most common type of kidney stones are calcium oxalate stones.
Top foods high in oxalates:
• Spinach
• Rhubarb
• Almonds
• Chocolate
• Cacao
• Buckwheat
• Wheat
• Beans
• Soy
• Tofu
• Miso
• Potato chips
• French fries
• Beet tops
• Swiss chard
• Star fruit
• Raspberries
• Black pepper
• Black tea
Nuts high in oxalates:
• Almonds
• Brazil nuts
• Hazelnuts
• Cashews
• Pine nuts
Nuts low in oxalates:
• Coconuts
• Peanuts
• Pistachios
• Macadamia nuts
• Walnuts
Something else that can increase oxalates is consuming excess ascorbic acid or glycine. Fat malabsorption due to a bile deficiency can also cause an increase in oxalates. If you’re prone to kidney stones or gout, you may also want to avoid consuming xylitol.
Some people develop gout as they age due to an increase in iron and inflammation. If you’re in this situation, you might want to try reducing the amount of iron you consume and work on lowering your inflammation.
How to neutralize oxalates:
1. Drink two and a half liters of fluid per day
2. Consume calcium-rich foods
3. Take vitamin D3
4. Consume citrates (lemon juice in water)
5. Get plenty of vitamin B6
6. Get plenty of vitamin B1
7. Consume a moderate amount of protein on Healthy Keto®
8. Lower your sodium
9. Consume more potassium
10. Consume foods low in oxalates

There is a great way to get rid of iron. Give blood. I have heredity hemocromotosis. I had 3 times the ferritine than I should have when I found out. had to give blood 9 times to get my ferritine where it should be, and I maintain my iron levels by giving blood serveral times a year.

Doctor Berg, I had multiple incidents where I prepared a favorite Ground Beef recipe that uses a lot of Garlic and Onion salt.... and had what seemed to be needle like gravel collect in my bladder... which felt like the worst conceivable bladder infection... but no bacteria.. per test. Curious if those high doses of Garlic and Onion Salt might have triggered a dumping of Oxylates. It took several days to pass the "needles". But I can't think of another explanation.

I passed about 20 kidney stones between the age of 30-50. Way more painful than childbirth. The last one was 16mm. I was septic and almost died. Couldn’t pass it bc of the size, had two stents, and ureteroscopy. Someone told me about drinking lemon water every day to prevent stones. Drink plenty of water and take Vit D and K together. Never had another one! 🙏🏼✝️

How did I miss this 11 months ago? In January I went carnivore and experienced an oxalate dump. Took a couple of weeks to figure it out. The little buggers were coming out my ears, eyes, skin and diarrhea. Painful! So I got Sally K Nortons book and listened to her and a few others. Now I'm low oxalate and taking some of the supplements as you suggest. But yours is the best, most informative and concise video on the subject that I've seen. And i watch you almost every day. I wish I wouldn't have skipped over this one 11 months ago. Thanks for all your super informative and concise videos. You're a great educator.

So now that I told you about what I do for oxalates what happened with gout is I had it for six weeks didn’t know what it was. This was back in 2005. I went to the doctor. She gave me some medication. I did some research on the side effects and I wasn’t happy so I did a research on natural ways. And I found a level teaspoon of baking soda in the morning, a level teaspoon of baking soda mixed in water at night, and in three days six weeks of hell was over. Fast forward 15 years later, my fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue I was in so much pain for weeks. My doctor said this is your new normal. I was like there’s no way in hell. What happened? Well I decided the pain is so excruciating in every joint. It actually felt like out in every joint. You can imagine how painful that was so I did baking soda and water in the morning and at night and it took 10 days but 10 days after weeks of hell it was completely gone so baking soda is my savior.!!

Cabbage chelates iron, takes it out of the body tissue. Good for hemochromatosis, better than bloodletting or blood donation. Substitute coleslaw for French fries. Growing up I was anemic and had to take iron pills, someone told me to stay away from cabbage because it depletes iron. Getting my bachelor's degree in fine arts, I needed a science class so I took nutrition and learned about chelation.

Happy you made this video. I started the keto diet because of you and I got so sick. Not keto flu sick, but like my eyes constantly burned and were red with a roach around them, I had insane amounts of inflammation and fatigue as well as insomnia, I developed full body peripheral neuropathy for several days, l was having so many kidney issues and signs of diabetes. I am a 22 year old, healthy and extremely active girl. I weight train, do lots of cardio, yoga, meditate, and only eat organic Whole Foods. I literally can’t remember the last time I ate out or ate something processed with refined sugars, etc etc. when I started keto I was eating a whole lot of almond butter, spinach salads with salmon, dark chocolate with my almond butter, sweet potatoes as my one carb a day, or beets in my salad, etc etc. after this is when it all started and I stopped keto because I was like this is clearly not for me. After extensive research about what could be happening to me, I learned about oxalates. I’ve been gradually minimizing them to avoid dumping and WOW!!! All those symptoms are gone and I’m starting to feel like myself again. I will attempt a mostly keto diet again without those foods. Please start mentioning this is your keto videos because it may be a huge reason why so many struggle to stick with keto. Oxalates caused me to have ravenous cravings on keto, and it wasn’t even carb cravings, I just felt soooo hungry. I no longer feel that at all and my appetite has diminished SO much. I’m 5’0 105 pounds so I’m not trying to lose a lot of weight, but I gained 10 pounds in the last several months and now I’m finally down 5 pounds after making these changes.

Interesting ! I lost about 30 pounds after 3 week keto and OMAD, skin and bone, I think keto is not for me because I don’t want to lose weight just for my pre diabetes and autophagy. Since I added back carbs on my diet, I have gained back almost all my weight in a short period of time. It makes me think that keto is best for overweighted ppl, but might not for thin people 🤔
@Alexandrianoelleallen
@Alexandrianoelleallen Жыл бұрын
@@recuerdos2457 I think keto can have a lot of benefits for everyone as an excessive amount of carbs (especially the kind most people consume today) are not good for us and I find I feel a lot better eating mostly fat and protein with moderate carbs. Not as low as the standard keto ratio but much lower than I used to eat. Most of the initial weight loss people have from keto is water weight and carbs retain more water so I bet a lot of your weight loss consisted of that as well! If you ever did want to try it again it’d probably be best to eat more food than you usually would which I consider a blessing because I love food lol. A lot of carbs always makes me feel bleh

I'm more healthy at 43 almost 44, then I was in my 20's and 30s. I am still tweaking areas, my gut, balancing hormones. I watch family members go down with diabetes and I wasn't feeling good, I was bound and determined not to go down like that. In my 40s, I'm much lighter and my numbers are good, never diabetic. Currently working on my gut, I was put on antibiotics a couple months ago after a foot surgery, so experiencing gut issues now again. Binge watching your videos to get on the right path. Once again, highly impressed with your work Eric. My take on stones is a diet high on acid forming foods and low on alkaline foods causing low PH in the blood. As alkaline minerals come in without the presence of Vit D, calcium (all forms of alkaline minerals to a degree, but Calcium is the big one) free flows of Calcium in the blood in high amounts because there isn't enough Vitamin D to take it to storage, leads to Calcium buffering acids in the blood like Oxalates, UA etc. and start to solidify into stones as these acids become partially uncoupled from alkaline minerals when removed from the kidneys into the Urine. I'm of the opinion that the blood is acidified "before" alkaline minerals are introduced from meal digestion. Combine it with deficiencies relating to the body not being able to store alkaline minerals as they come in, or deal with buildup of purines (compromised Folate cycle from B deficiencies), some dehydration etc, and we've got conditions ripe for stones. I like your take on Iron bonding to Oxalates, did I read that right? Or iron used as a buffer in general with acids that build up as a probable cause of gout, makes sense with the meat connection to gout and gravity pulling these toxins into area's like the big toe, I'll have to take a deeper dive into it for the nuances. Appreciate your videos as usual, Eric.

I was precisely thinking about this oxalate issue about greens and nuts that I consume in high quantity and lead me to a sort of gout after a certain time a few days ago I realized it could be due to this excess of oxalates and I lowered ,in fact the crisis quite vanished immediately ( the next day let's say) as I also was increasing yogurt or fermented milk I did it instinctively and your explanation is now confirming that I was right I also use different methods to neutralize as much as possible ( fermentation, cooking etc.)

Considering how much water I drank and how healthy I ate, I was shocked(to say the least) when I developed an 8 mm stone. Taking a second look at my diet, it makes sense. I might as well have been shooting up pure oxalate. Cocoa in my coffee every morning, greens with every meal, nuts as a snack. Changed all that around and crossing my fingers so that I don't have to go through that nightmare again.

"Glycine can also increase your risk of oxalates as well" (2'55"). Glycine itself does not increase the risk of oxalates. In fact, glycine is not associated with oxalate metabolism in a way that would lead to an increased risk of oxalate-related issues, such as kidney stone formation.

Thank you for addressing this. I got oxalate overload from dietary maltodextrin. I don’t know if it has oxalates or just caused me to make more oxalates but my pseudo gout went away in 3 days when I quit eating it. Also increase because oxalates accumulate in the body when you get too much.

I wish there was more testing on oxalates in food. I see the same lists everywhere but the foods I like aren't on either list. I'm also curious about if supplements contain them too.

I had my first gout attack when I was 25, it lasted a week. 6 years later and I'm still battling gout. All it really takes is a dietary change unless your kidneys need to be replaced. I am definitely overweight but come to realize if I hit a certain weight, gout is essentially none existent. I also started to take 300-600mg of allopurinol/day, that may be the biggest game changer - one 300mg in the morning and one at night, an hour or so before I sleep with a full glass of water. Seems to be best taken at night if you only take one pill a day as uric acid forms overnight when your body is resting.

Dr Berg, you are amazing! I love your recent streak of videos about kidney stones. I’m a quadriplegic female, with indwelling catheter. Originally I had proteus, and then crystals appeared.. struvite and apatite.. 2 years later, the UA’s show multi flora only, and crystals due to epithelial cells.. I’ve been trying to take a load of supplements… for the last 2 years, without success. The hard thing I need to get used to is starving the colonized proteus, just my guess, is quit sugar and carbs.. I feel I do need AB, but the ones I’ve had so far for only two weeks .. are not enough to clear my situation. I hope everything will heal after changing my chocolate fries etc loving self… Thank you Dr Berg!! Thank you ! Thank you and thank You!!

I found that picking one day a week, example Sunday morning, I can eat whatever chocolate I want. It worked as I couldn’t eat as much as when I was eating and craving every day. I also remember to eat enough of the vegetables I prepare everyday with care. Vegetables stopped most of my cravings. Adding good flavourings, garlic, onion, ginger for example, simple and tasty.

@@lombmusic07 thank you for your great suggestion, yes, I love veggies, i just need to step up my preparation game. I’m ready to give up 99.9% of my chocolate consumption, im already there now, I will allow myself 1 set of garlic fries with my friend once every two weeks.. and a cube of chocolate for one day out of 2 weeks too.. or half a little cube of hazelnut milk chocolate every week, it seduced me far faaaar too much. It’s a parasitic thought creation !! Lol

Ive had a staghorn and multiple stones in my kidney made of calcium oxalate and multiple procedures and im 26. My metabolism just doesnt make enough potassium citrate (more than likely genetic and diet) and i forget to drink water (enough) and my uncle has a severe case of gout, as well as my other uncles having bouts of stones and my cousins children having similar issues. Even though i personally dont have a large oxalate intake in my diet, i have colitis and it can play a role. Lowering my intake of meats and protein not drinking beer whatsoever. I recommend anyone to treat your kidneys right... pain i would not wish upon anyone. Watch your oxalate intake and drink plenty of water. Thank you for bringing awareness of this issue Dr. Berg thats affected mine and familys qol

Perfect timing doc! I have had about three or four episodes in the last 10 years, and I was finally put on allipurinol 100 mg which I’ve been taking religiously the past few years and no more gout attacks! I Also take vitamin D 2000 IU along with vitamin K2 mk7 and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with lemon juice and olive oil every day. The only thing I consume that’s high in oxalates is dark chocolate, which is very high in polyphenols. I hope to live past 100……. Anyone else that’s reading this I Would definitely say do what I’m doing if you really want to improve your health and inflammation !

@Pilot Pete Hello sir, Can we take acv and lemon along with allopurinol?? Does it cause any interactions? What is your experience of gout?? Do you eat fish, chicken, meat etc.. May I know your insights of stopping gout and other complications by uric acid. Waiting for your reply..
@pilotpete405
@pilotpete405 Жыл бұрын
@@pram9832 are no known interactions between allipurinol and apple cider vinegar. Gout is some of worst pain you’ll ever have in your life. I have eaten healthy My entire life and health is a huge priority of mine, especially being a pilot I do eat a lot of fish and chicken and I go to the gym 3 to 4 times a week and lift a lot of weights. My protein intake is moderate. My uric acid level is now around 6. My only downfall is that I do not drink enough water A couple years ago it was around 10 which is higher than average. If you keep your uric acid level under six your joints will feel great your inflammation will be lower and so will your cholesterol probably.

Cacao definitely gives me problems with oxalates .Every-time I eat that lovely keto chocolate I get problems with my joints .Also Dr Berg what is the connection between fungal/Candida issues and the production of oxalates .Some say the fungal issues produce the oxalates ,others say it’s the other way round and argue that it’s the oxalates that produce the problem with Fungus/Candida .Could you look into this ? I need some clarity.

I had to give up roughly 10% of my vegan lifestyle to cope with the problem of creating too many kidney stones that had me in the hospital for two days two separate times. Between the tofu and soy meat alternatives, half the beans and almost all the nuts, it added up very quickly in my overload of oxalates. Fish, poultry, oat milk, lemon and vinegar water put me back on track to recovery. Two things I have a problem with, too many oxalates in me and too many oxalis in the yard.

Fermented foods will help as well. There's a certain bacteria that consumes oxalates. If you have it. Then only a small amount of oxalates should pass through. The rest would be converted to B vitamins.

For kidney stones the main symptom is severe sharp pain that starts suddenly, usually in your belly or one side of your back, and it may go away just as quickly. Other symptoms can include abnormal urine color, blood in your urine, fever, chills, nausea, and vomiting.

Warchild, refugee and legal immigrant here. kina virus released to fk up the elections...millions dead, billion+ with heart/organ issues...evil know no bounds, 100% intentionally released...just to get one man out of office, one man they could not buy/control. I have seen what communism will do to stay in or get in power. Anything! Chinese killed 30+ million of their own for power less than a century ago. It was a crazy conspiracy theory that FBI smoked Kennedy and now we know it is true. It was a conspiracy theory that kina virus was manmade but now we know it is true. MSM/Big Tech working overtime to censor/ban. This was intentionally released to fk up US election and for the Chinese to get protesters of Hong Kong streets because if Hong Kong goes so do commies in China. Win-win for commies and US dems....millions dead, billion+ with heart/organ issues. Godless people will always create hell.

Excellent information in this video and I thought I’d add my own gout experience as a non-alcohol drinker . I started drinking lots of beetroot juice for my blood pressure but developed gout symptoms in my joints especially the big toe and found out beet juice is high in oxalates, so obviously I cut back and the gout symptoms diminished, red meat 🥩 also triggers painful gout symptoms so I avoid that too . Thanks for doing these informative videos 🙏.

I had very high iron levels at one time and other than not taking beef liver pills any more, I never donated blood and now my iron levels are normal...And about the high oxalates in numerous veggies and fruits, like spinach, chard, etc. I drank green smoothies and ate big, mixed veggie salads almost daily for the past 50 years and have developed false arthritis, false gout, fibromyalgia - but hooray! lots less pain and finally healing after going low-oxalate and stopping the worst offender veggies.

Dr. Berg, I am doing the blood type diet (A) and I also have had a kidney stone (uric acid) removal operation about a year ago. I have noted that there is a low oxalate diet that is beneficial but some of the foods on that diet clash with the blood type diet I am doing. For example, coconut. I do also eat all kinds of nuts (cashews, walnuts, almonds) but I soak them. Is that something that would be okay or does the soaking not make a difference with kidney stones? I am getting better with the urine issue and it is almost clear at times. I am also doing a carrot and raisin concoction that I think is really helping! Always enjoy your videos and learn so much. Thank You.
