I`m not going to be pedantic regarding one or two errors that occurred, because you clearly enjoy what you do, and it has been a genuine pleasure to watch. I do return to Oxford to meet with academic colleagues, in2015 and2016, but find the sheer number of visitors can make it quite trying. Oh yes, and I do know where the ' Turf ' is, of course :) Thank you.

One other point which may be worth mentioning, to those who may be unaware, that most Oxford Colleges were ' male only ' institutions right up until the mid 1970`s. Many regional Universities adopted a co-ed basis well before, but Oxford showed distinct reluctance in this regard - if it helps :)

Thank you so much we will be visiting Oxford when in London >>>Can we do it in one day or 2????
@TourGuidesTravelGuides6 жыл бұрын
Effie, Most people do it in a day. but it really depends on what you want to get out of it. If you want to really immerse yourself and get a feel for the place, stay overnight and take a day and a half to two. That will give you a chance to try some local eateries and to take your time and not rush about . In fact, we just put together a delightful little private tour for a nice couple that had them staying in Oxford. It allowed them to overnight there for a few days and then explore, not only Oxford, but also some of the surrounding area like the Cotswolds and Blenheim Palace,. They loved getting to tour where Downtown was filmed, but their favorite visit was a little thatched farm where they make homemade scones and other treats for lunch after a morning excursion exploring the local scenery.

A nice easy going style of guiding. Much better than the lecture tone format of some tour guides, in my opinion. But a number of errors were made. At 9.46 you mention that no Catholic has sat on the throne since the Reformation. James, Duke of York converted to the Roman Catholic faith in 1669, and eighteen years later took the throne as King. At 40.31 the Radcliffe Camera was never built as an extension to the Bodleian but as a separate science library until 1861 when it closed and the books moved elsewhere. The Bodleian took the building over and it was renamed the Radcliffe Camera that year, and finally became an additional reading room for the Bod. At 49.57 that's not Thomas Bodley but William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke. And at 57.08 that's not Christopher Wren but Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon who has his statue on the building he posthumously financed to house the University printing press, the Clarendon Building. Having said that, I have been talking about Dean Charles Liddell for a number of years, and having watched your film I realise his name is actually Henry!
@TourGuidesTravelGuides7 жыл бұрын
Dear Peter, I really appreciate the feedback one month ago. Sorry for the delay in the response. I've been tied up in another project. I particularly appreciate the compliment about the ease of the guiding. I also appreciate your precise knowledge about the comings and goings of Catholicism. I admit I glossed over that. Overall, I err on the side of being a generalist rather than a specialist. I try to not get too bogged down in that. In my experience in this industry, there is always someone who knows more than you, and you are the case in point. I try to keep it fairly simplistic. I plan on being back in the UK later this year. I'd love your input as to where the Tour Guides Travel Guides should go next. Cheers. Rich Jones.

How does one get a tour of Oxford, College if staying in London?...Dallas, Texas...
@TourGuidesTravelGuides3 жыл бұрын
Bruce, thanks for watching & thanks for getting in touch. There are a couple of ways to do this if London is your base firstly go with one of the main London sightseeing companies like Evan Evans , Golden Tours or Premium Tours that go to Oxford & specifically state entrance to a college more than likely Christchurch. However, you would also be visiting other sites in the day Windsor castle & Stonehenge for example. Therefore time in the college would be limited. Alternatively getting to Oxford from London is very easy on public transport train or bus services are excellent I believe you could arrange a private tour with a local guide through the Tourist Information center & would give you a more comprehensive insight into the “City of dreaming spires “. I hope this helps let me know how it works out. Best wishes Rich Jones Tour Guides Travel Guides.

Eryk, Here's to a lovely vacation. The River Cherwell runs along the east side of the city. The Thames is on the other side. 13th C.? Yes but the school is much older. My understanding is that the University was chartered in 1248 by Henry III, however 'teaching students at the site went back to at least 1096! The real reason for its existence/prominence is not often talked about but simply put the Nobility, & other wealthy citizenry were sending their sons to University in Paris for their educations and on again off again wars with France made it difficult to continue, so they made their own University at Oxford. Btw, Cambridge U. was later formed after disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209 got out of hand, some academics fled from the violence to Cambridge, later forming the University of Cambridge.

We did look at doing a piece on it separately or with another tour. I appreciate the feedback though. If you have any other ideas, please send them along.

Yeah, we hated leaving it out and wrestled with the decision but had to streamline it for the regular day visitor who had a certain amount of time in town.

You might well have pointed out that Oxford and other pre 19th Century universities were founded for the express purpose of training clergy for the Church, Roman Catholic and then Anglican, the Established state sponsored Church, which explains why theology and classical languages loomed so large.

Britt Unculus, many thanks for taking the time out to watch our Oxford edition & particular thanks for the feedback greatly appreciated. @@TourGuidesTravelGuides Dare I say that you meet Lord Reith's requirement for the BBC; it's not easy to get the right balance between educating, informing and entertaining; well done; highly admirable and you make it look so easy when it is not. Super photography too; thank you very much.

Britt Unculus. My sincere apologies for the tardiness of the response, I believed I had replied to your last message & particularly kind words . Obviously I hadn’t & so I am sorry not like me at all. Having been involved in the travel industry for the best part of 30 years now, my word where did that go ? guiding tours around Europe I always believed that the number 1 key was the information, not just the history & stories but logistics, directions, culture, currency, safety, the list is endless. Absolutely keep them entertained appropriately, trust me on this there are some dull guides out there & some who really should not be working with the public. I never saw myself as an educator, however, if my clients left my tour well informed, entertained & with just a little more knowledge than before they arrived then I thought I had done my job right. On a final note, probably the greatest compliment I received, gosh must be 20 years ago now, was from an American lady who asked me if I was a history teacher. When I replied that I was not her response was “ well young man you should be “ . Thanks for messages & my best wishes to you. Rich Jones.

The Scripture passage at 54:35 is an edited version of part of Luke 2:46: "...they found him in the temple sitting among the teachers...." The Greek here reads: "They found him sitting among the teachers (or 'doctors,' per the King James version)." The implication is that learning and wisdom can be found among the learned and wise, although, as we know from the Biblical context, the 12-year-old Jesus astonished _them_ with _his_ understanding.

I knew I didn't have it exactly right. I was corrected recently that it was in fact from the passage in Luke 2:20-21 and 2:40-52. So many thanks for the correction. Greatly appreciated. Thanks for watching!

@@TourGuidesTravelGuides I returned recently from my first visit to Oxford (for one day) and must say that, after watching your video again, your tour is far and away the most engaging and informative I've encountered. One day in Oxford is far too little even to gain a cursory understanding of this great university. Having been there physically has whetted my appetite for more exposure to Oxford.

CBWilson once again thank you so much for your comments, greatly appreciated. Was it really 3 years ago that you sent me that wonderful information on the script outside the School of Divinity ? My word where does the time go ? Best wishes, Rich Jones .

@9:50 James II was the last Catholic to sit on the throne
@TourGuidesTravelGuides4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Myles indeed he was but there has been a question mart as to whether he " came out of the closet" before or after ascending the throne . For the majority of our viewers from overseas it just simplifies the story of the reformation. But thanks for the feedback anyway. Cheers Rich

@TourGuidesTravelGuides6 жыл бұрын
James, Thank you for the communication. In over 100 k views, you were the first to spot that, indeed, Whipp's Cross is not one of Eleanor Crosses (as neither are Gerrard's or Banbury for that matter- as you and I both know). The only three remaining crosses are Waltham, Geddington, and Hardingstone. Of course the original 12 were Lincoln (originally erected 1290 in Harby when Eleanor died), Grantham, Stanford, Geddington, Northhampton, Stony Stratford, Woburn, Dunstable, St. Albans, Waltham, Westcheap, and Charing. I want to sincerely thank you for paying that much attention to the video. If you are familiar with my other works, you may have noticed, we have purposely inserted little inaccuracies. We were not sure about our target audience at first and how historical we needed to be and how long the viewers could/would pay attention (It seems the average is about 20 minutes so producing longer pieces like this seem as if they would be better in smaller format). Anyway, James, we are looking to create some additional projects by the end of the year and would value your comments and feedback. Many thanks and best wishes, Rich Jones

Only too true what he said about bikes. They don’t care. Where I live, we’ve got teenage boys and young men riding around on pavements at breakneck speed without number plates and without a driving licence. They need to be careful they don’t bump into any babies in prams. They might hurt themselves.
