But as I always said there we’re always places that you experienced that you said been there but never need to go back, however there we’re always 1 or 2 places where you felt compelled to return to. Funnily enough just recently experienced that myself this past summer on a return trip to the UK with the family for a 4 week visit & adventure. RB , many thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. It has been many a long year since I was tearing up the Wirral peninsula & the wilds of Cheshire . In my day all the cool kids hung out around Tarvin, Tarporley or Great Barrow to the east of Chester. Or heading to the west on to the Wirral good times were always had at Ness , Parkgate, Willaston or Thornton Hough. All very pretty places but sadly I cannot guarantee intellectual attraction. I literally walked the city based on your guide. So thanks for that. I advise people to be careful with the downtown part as its difficult to socially distance, and not many were wearing a mask. Very crowded. Also parts of the wall were closed but you an always go around. Plenty information posts with interesting historical details.

I live in North Wales, Hawarden, a famous William travelled through the village and removed the cross which was mounted on a plinth. The villagers didn’t appreciate this so planted a tree in place of the missing cross. Hence the name ’Cross Tree Lane’. Was it William the Conqueror? Thank you.

Lara , good to hear from you again, 3 years already time flys. Okay so I did a little digging for you & this is what I found so far. The Clwyd Powys archeological trust historic settlement survey tells us that there were originally 2 crosses, the upper & the lower crosses . Both of which were dismantled in 1641 & therefore obviously well after William the Conqueror. Apparently the lower cross was replaced by the house of corrections or better known as the village lock up which I would imagine did not please the locals. In 1742 a tree was planted adjacent to the lock up to commemorate the lower cross. I didn’t find anything certain to say that was when the street was renamed Cross Tree Lane or it was called that before 1742 . I can’t find much reference to a particular William, although I have a fairly flimsy theory so see what you think. During the English Civil War Hawarden was in Parliamentarian hands as they were laying siege to Royalist Chester. One Cromwell’s senior generals was Sir William Brereton so maybe that could be your William, as I say just a theory. Hope this helps & if you find out anything else please let me know. We did consider including a piece on the football club, however, as this is essentially a walking tour of the City itself we felt that the Diva stadium a bit off the beaten track. Not a bad (if brief) guide with few interesting titbits if extra info. However Chester City centre isnt stuck in history (FYI the main influences being both roman period, the Cromwellian civil war and then Victorian renaissance.) and readers/visitor should therefore note that whilst all the main officially preserved (graded 1 & 2) structures are untouchable, since the making of this video, there have been nmbr changes with further more notable change to the main city centre are planned that in the process will very much alter its character and thereby make this guide needing major revision. So whilst history remains static, even as you read this the future of the city is being radical remolded to meet current and future needs. So if visitors want to see Chester as per this guide ld urge you to do so ASAP as the for better or worse, as with the Victorian renaissance, the new development (primarily behind the town hall) will result in centre looking very different from today.

With all the proposed changes and the scheduled times for them, it has been a matter of a lot of discussion with us as to when we re-tape. CJ, Thank you. I try to be a generalist, not a specialist. As a travel guide trying to entertain and welcome mostly oversees audiences, it becomes difficult to juggle the history with the necessities. Add to that the impromptu nature of the job, and you get a more vague historical overview than historians like with a few misspeaks. I would be interested in your opinion. What aspects of the Civil War would you consider absolute necessities for a first time visitor? Additionally, if I decided to do a piece more focused and nuanced on the Civil War, what would you suggest? What would intrigue you? I must admit that addressing a different target audience is intriguing. I appreciate the feedback. Rich

To address your 2 points, Indeed many historians believe that Aethlestan was responsible for the unification of the Kingdom, however, many others believe that it was Edgar the Peaceful that actually ratified the union. On that I guess we'll have to agree to differ, which is okay. To point 2 I really have no idea. Obviously we know that the white lime wash was used to prevent disease & infection from the dung in the wattle & daub construction. There was a phase of whitewashing everything in sight particularly religious imagery during the 17th century . The bust above Shakespeare's tomb being one example. the clock in the tower has three faces, a face to the north, another to thw south and the last to the east. No face points to the west, the direction of Wales. The is because Chester people won't give the Welsh the time of day!

I hope it doesn't repeat this guy in the video who claims that the Agricola Tower was the Roman gate. It was built about 1200. The glove in the street by Pykes? - nothing to do with challenging the king - it meant the market was on. The 12th crest on the old Grosvenor Club is Monmouth.

I am not sure why you did not chose to just communicate directly with me. Additionally, when you say "repeat this guy in the video who claims" do you mean me? Why would the previous person announce his new brochure to me if I was in it? For the record, I am aware that the current structure that stands at Agricola tower, or rather the stone Agricola Tower, was built in the 12th Century. It is built upon and links Roman ruins. Allow me to quote, "One side of it is built upon the Roman wall of the city, and one corner stands upon a Roman arch." As for the glove on Pyke Street, it refers to the sign from the "The Crown and Glove Hotel" which closed in 1920 and is now Pyke's the Jewellers. Allow me to quote again, "The distinctive hanging 'crown & glove' pub sign survives. It was announced in late March 2007 that, in partnership with Chester Civic Trust, the sign was to be restored and an appeal has been made for details of the sign's origins and memories of the old pub. The sign is said to refer to a time when the monarch could be challenged on his accession." This practice is also known as throw down the gauntlet. A champion would fight on the king's behalf. Since Norman times we have a person who is the Standard Bearer of England or the Hounourable The King/Queen's Champion. I can honestly say I cannot remember which crest was the 12th. I strive to be as accurate as possible but do err on occasion. I may have done so on this, but after having the video vetted by the town crier and other experts from the town, I feel satisfied with the important historical details which I worked hard to correct. It’s not Mock Tudor it’s Arts and Crafts!! I have no idea why this guy and so many other people simply do not recognise it. It’s the most distinctive feature of the cityscape FFS! The town hall is Gothic Revival with windows and plate tracery in the Early English style.

@@TourGuidesTravelGuides I know a guide is a jack of all trades but mostly what people see is buildings so you really should understand them yourself. There are good reasons to believe A&C has its origins in Chester when shop owners started blackening the timbers (this is a Cheshire thing), predating William Morris etc.Chester and the surrounding county is the best place in the world to see A&C, including the clock. And if you had known what you were looking at you could have pointed out some outstanding examples. Everyone notices Liberty in London and you missed stuff better than that!

@@jontalbot1 So continuing our amusing “bit of banter “ I’m picking up your love of Chester & your passion for architecture of the A&C style & that is something I respect & admire. Incidentally, amongst many passions of mine, vexillology rates pretty highly with me , horses for courses I guess. I’m also picking up a certain antipathy towards Tour Guides or tourism in general or maybe I’m off the mark but I suspect not as the “Jack of all trades “ comment suggests. I will admit that as in all professions you will encounter fraudsters, charlatans, rogues & ne’erdowells, however, in my experience in over 30 years in the travel industry the vast majority of tour guides, tour managers, directors, drivers, escorts, hosts, leaders, reps et Al all share a similar passion for our profession. At the very top of the list of priorities is the comfort, safety, enjoyment, enlightenment & enjoyment of the clients. A lot of us have been through the incredibly arduous yet absolutely amazing courses of the Guild of London Blue Badge Guides, think of the London Black cab drivers “Knowledge “ on steroids & you might get the picture. Completely & utterly rewarding though I have to say & would do it again in a heartbeat. Again most of us who work multiple destinations tend to be generalists rather than specialists or specialists in several areas. Flags , Salisbury Cathedral & the Reconquistia of Spain in the 11th century I will humbly submit are mine. Another thing that we tour people share is that we are human & as I am sure you are aware that “it is human to err” & I know for a fact that you are only too well aware that too many people are “too ready to criticize rather than praise “, just a simple fact of human nature. Speaking from a position of experience I know & understand what the average “punter “ wants & needs from a tour are as mentioned above but primarily entertainment & variety. I think that you will also be surprised that people see a lot more than just buildings (are buildings not is )! I can tell you with absolute certainty that they want a lot more than just buildings. The tour guide needs to be able to wear many hats & have a basic working knowledge of all things relevant to the area / country that they are working in. For example cultural, religious, political, currency, monarchy, education, social, spiritual, sport, food, holidays, cost of living, commerce and yes of course architecture. The list is endless, just give that some thought for a moment & maybe consider some of the questions that come our way . We are currently working on a book about life on the road & there is a chapter called the things that they say covering exactly that. The majority of my clients are from this side of the pond, where I now reside in the USA & the market at which we aimed the Tour Guides Travel Guides at probably haven’t heard of William Morris, Arts and Crafts, Gothic Revival or plate tracery in the early English style & also probably wouldn’t recognize it if it jumped up & bit them on the backside & also probably wouldn’t give a damn anyway. What they have heard of, however, is “Mock Tudor” & that is something they can very much visualize as it is now an extremely vogue style of housing for the savvy property developers over here tapping into the nouveau riche booming property market. In conclusion, I must tell you that when we set up Tour Guides Travel Guides about 9 years ago, the idea was for it to be exactly what it says it is, a travel guide made by people who have worked the industry as “boots on the ground “ tour guides. A guide for people to use as a basic introduction if they happen to visit said area or for people to view from the comfort of their own home, incidentally our views skyrocketed during the pandemic. What the guides are definitely not are dry lecturing long gone are the days of the aging Oxford don moonlighting as a guide boring the pants off & draining the soul of unsuspecting punters hoping for a lighthearted yet informative day of touring/ sightseeing. Good riddance ! Most of us & most definitely we at TGTG do not take ourselves too seriously, the fall can be mighty, I’ve seen it many times, we can poke fun at ourselves and will occasionally make mistakes, it’s human ! As a quick side note that you may or may not find interesting, before we release any material onto social media we review the film multiple times & then have the finished article vetted by local experts. In the case with our Chester edition we met with people from the Cathedral, Tourist Information, City Council and most importantly the man the myth the legend your Town Crier David Mitchell & all of them gave us a resounding 👍 yes a couple of minor details but nothing to lose sleep over. As l said you missed explaining what is truly good and interesting to see in Chester because of it. A&C has many variants but it is something which originated in England and had a serious purpose. It was a reaction against mass manufacturing and aimed to unite art with craft as it had been in the pre- industrial age, hence the name. The past also inspires classical styles like Greek revival and Gothic revival. I am not trying to score points or stick up for Chester. I know you do a lot of these things but when you understand a little better what you are looking at your enjoyment will increase and our presentation improve

@@jontalbot1 So here is where I’m at, having reread your last communication I wasn’t sure it warranted a response, however, after a moment of consideration I feel I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t. A first cursory glance at your missive I thought I noticed an almost conciliatory term of “not scoring points “. I got to thinking once again that this gentleman & I use that term somewhat loosely, knows his subject & has a passion for it & to repeat that is something I respect & admire . Another aspect I considered was that this topic is a whole subject on its own albeit very dry & should be treated as it should be as a specialist subject. My mind got to wondering if he is that passionate & knowledgeable about this why wouldn’t he want to create a piece himself & present it himself as he saw fit ? The other aspect that crossed my mind briefly was this, the family & I will be back in the UK in July 2025 , we will be on the Wirral for about 5 days & the fleeting thought I had was of you & I meeting up in Chester to discuss your subject & maybe even work on some sort of collaboration, this is something we have done before in other projects with great success. As I said I only considered this briefly, very briefly indeed. Having reread your comments again a time or two my impression changed, we are quite obviously polar opposites. I don’t think for one moment you understood or even wanted to understand what I was saying about our industry & travel & tourism in the 21st century or how I present my travel guides. It appears that you have absolutely no flexibility in your arguments, everyone is totally wrong & you are always right. You clearly feel that you know more than I what needs to be presented in a basic introduction to Chester. I will tell you that in almost a decade that we have been running our various projects, the literally thousands of comments we have received ranging from good, bad , indifferent to the completely barking, never once have we told anyone what I will tell you now. As the old saying goes “ Put your money where your mouth is, if you think you can do better be my guest & go right ahead “ . Please do let me know when you release your master piece as I will be waiting with bated breath. Looking back over our communications I believe I have shown you nothing but courtesy & respect, okay admittedly a little tongue in cheek flippancy, but what would expect if you had received such erudite & literate words like “ this guy “ & the stellar “FFS” wise words indeed. You on the other hand have been nothing short of aggressive, condescending, rude, patronizing, disrespectful & so very superior. To question my literacy & call out my presentations, if that was what you were actually trying to articulate is frankly uncalled for, inappropriate & insulting. You may want to look in the mirror & engage brain before opening mouth the next time you feel it necessary to savagely critique someone else’s work & ideas just because those ideas don’t align with yours. Finally before you do go on the attack you might want to check your own facts. I have done a little more research myself this weekend & I can tell you that a lot of your argument is way wide of the mark , you will certainly have to brush up on your presentation on the differences between Mock Tudor & Arts & Crafts else you will appear more ridiculous than you already do. We at Tour Guides Travel Guides welcome & appreciate all comments & feedback, good, bad , indifferent or the occasional absolutely barking, it all helps to keep us on our game & we are always looking to improve. Firstly I would like to say to you is we are not professional historians nor are we professional filmmakers & we have never pretended to be , we are tour guides & as our name suggests this is what these editions are travel guides made by tour guides for people to use if they choose to at no cost. Our views escalated incredibly during the past 18 months due to lockdown & the majority of comments were appreciative of the fact that they could travel somewhere virtually from the comfort of their armchair. You state that we “ read things from newspapers to get views” is laughable to be honest, it’s not & never will be about the number of views & it’s most certainly not about the money. Finally Lesley, something else you need to understand about us is we do not take ourselves too seriously & do you know why ? Too many people, present company included, want to shoot you down. Before we even post on KZbin after the production process we arrange meetings with local historians, tourist information & other local experts to vet the films so we can insert or remove as appropriate. In this particular case we consulted with the public relations department of Chester cathedral, tourist information centre & most importantly the man himself, the one & only Mr. David Mitchell Chester City Town Crier, all of whom approved of our work.
