A witch may have predicted The Shipton-on-Cherwell train crash. The accident happened a few hundred yards from the village of Hampton Gay on the day before Christmas 24th December 1874 at 12:30am. 34 people lost there lives. The disaster was predicted by a woman named Martha Pearce, who lived near Wallingford and who was renowned as a clairvoyant and witch. Half an hour after leaving Oxford, while the train was passing up the Cherwell valley in between the villages of Shipton-on-Cherwell and Hampton Poyle, a wheel broke on the extra carriage. A number of the carriages ended up in the Oxford canal. The fields and canal littered with wreckage and bodies. The large manor house at Hampton Gay is now a ruin, having been destroyed by fire in 1887 and never rebuilt. a rumour began to circulate that on the night of the fire, the occupants of the manor house had refused to provide shelter for the victims of the nearby train crash, and as a result a curse was put on the manor house that ultimately caused its destruction. The paper mill that did provide shelter for the crash victims was itself burned down in 1875, a year after the railway disaster and a full 12 years before the manor house was destroyed.
In 1596 Hampton Gay villagers joined those from Hampton Poyle who were plotting an agrarian revolt against the enclosures. Led by Bartholemew Steer who farmed the land at Hampton Gay, the rebels planned to murder landowners including Vincent Barry and his daughter and then to march on London. A carpenter at Hampton Gay warned Barry, five ringleaders were arrested and taken to London for trial, Bartholemew Steer, who was recognised as the leader was sentenced to be hanged drawn and quartered. However, the Government also recognised the cause of the rebels' grievance and determined that "order should be taken about inclosures...that the poor may be able to live
