Hi there. It's more common to say 'at playtime.' For the newspaper, we use 'in' to describe content written in the newspaper and 'on' if there is a physical object on top of the newspaper, such as a pair of glasses. Hope this helps you!

I've understood some uses of those prepositions, but i still don't know the difference between "in social media" and "on social media" and the difference between "on the subject" and "in the subject" I've seen people say each of them. I think they both are possible. But how do I know when to use them ? Thanks !
@Oxfordonlineenglish13 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Good questions. It mostly depends on the context of the sentence. For example: 'Today we're going to talk about what is popular in social media news,' or, 'Many people participate in social media groups.' We use on in these situations: 'Children spend a lot of time on social media.' As for 'the subject,' we have to think about the context of the sentence as well. Some example sentences: 'Can I have more information on this subject,' or, 'She excelled in the subject of English in high school.' Hope this helps you!

We went for a walk to the country side. Is this sentence grammatically correct? 'to' is also used with verbs of the movement.
@Oxfordonlineenglish12 жыл бұрын
Hi Atif. If the countryside is your destination, and you are beginning your walk outside of the countryside (i.e. the city), then using 'to' is fine.

If I say " Please read and follow the instructions on the top of the page", is it correct? What is different between "at the top of " and " on the top of"
@Oxfordonlineenglish12 жыл бұрын
Hi there. It's more common to say 'at the top of the page,' although you can also say 'on the top.' However, when we say 'on top of the page,' 'on top of the piece of paper,' etc. that means that something is physically on top of the page, such as a book. This is why it may be more common to hear native speakers say 'at the top' when explaining what is written. Hope this helps you!

Hi Nilda. What is your context for using a phrase like 'on entering the door'? Do you have a full sentence or idea we can review? We use 'in' to talk about accessing an account: 'sign in,' 'log in,' etc. We use 'on' to talk about websites which you visit: 'I saw it on Facebook,' 'I'm on Facebook now.' Hope this helps you!

@@Oxfordonlineenglish1 thank you so much for replying. This is the full sentence I would like to give as an example, " On entering the door, I remembered the doll I had broken". Why they did use "on" and not "in" or "at"? like " At entering the door..." or " In entering the door..."

What is particle? Is preposition a particle?
@Oxfordonlineenglish12 жыл бұрын
Technically, a particle is an adverb. I'm always struggling with when/when not to use technical language. Some people don't know the technical terms, and find them intimidating. Some people use different terms for the same thing, which can cause confusion. Also, many textbooks and teachers (including me!) sometimes simplify things by describing a phrasal verb as "verb plus preposition", which is technically not correct, but the true explanation: "verb + adverb which looks like a preposition" can make people confused. So, sorry if that makes things more difficult, but I wanted to answer your question fully.

What is the difference between *In the end* and *at the end*? please help me out.
@Oxfordonlineenglish13 жыл бұрын
Hi Suleman. 'In the end' is another way of saying 'finally'. It means you are giving a conclusion after a long, possibly uncertain or confusing story or series of events. For example: 'In the end, the girl was reunited with her dog after 10 long days apart.' 'At the end' is a bit more literal. It represents a single event at the point where something stops or happens. For example: 'I will submit my report at the end of the workday.' Hope this helps you!
