A major problem with the American political system is the amount of funding required for campaigning. I often joke that each administration is only effective during the 1st 2 years of each term, the remaining 2.years of each term is dedicated to raising funds for the campaigning for the next election. And because of this fact, cnadidates fall prey to lobbyists, the wealthy. Once you accept the funding, whether you win or not, you are obligated to assist these companies and individuals, ignoring the interest of the majority!

When one looks at surveys that evaluate democracies on an international scale, one finds the US always raking close to the bottom. I have seen the US ranked number 28 and I have seen it ranked number 36 (next to Israel). Terms such as democracy, socialism, communism & especially “freedom”are widely misused these days for geopolitical purposes.. America isn’t a true democracy nor practices “freedom” that it constantly touts & preaches to others as evidenced from the widespread discrimination & disenfranchisement against its own citizens particularly the minorities which are structural & institutionalized for example.. it’s become a dysfunctional state.. they have stricter traffic laws than gun laws for example. Likewise China isn’t a true socialist/communist state.. it’s the leadership of the countries & vested interests that set the tone & narrative against the other in line with their intentions. We can either rise together and accelerate progress for humanity or waste resources & more importantly time, confronting each other whilst stunting essential progress in fields that require urgency in addressing.
@CalvinK-the_old_fogeyКүн бұрын
To me, China is a more effective democracy. Although the country is governed by one party, the ruling apparatus is subject to regular elections and the potential leaders have to prove themselves and climb the power hierarchy. Voting is restricted to cadre members and these are the insiders who know the working behind the scene. This eliminates the power of one-man-one-vote system which is easily manipulated by social media. If we compare Xi Jinping v Donald Trump, the former strives for the common prosperity while the latter is concerned with enriching himself and his rich friends. A one-party system like China’s communist system limits the power struggle within the party but allows long term planning for progress. A two-party system like USA’s or UK’s will see a regular government change so that politicians are forced to be short-sighted and make plans only for the next 4-5 years.

It is interesting, a small proportion of a country's population gaining more than the bottom. Not only that, but, the bottom having a smaller share of the country's wealth over time, sounds very much like what the collective west scorns about dictatorial countries. As a born and raised American having worked in Singapore for decades, and have now returned to my native Brooklyn I would encourage you to try living and working in the US as middle class to better juxtapose living in Singapore as middle class. Understanding the nuances of social equality and freedoms in Singapore, it's important to acknowledge the significant strides the country has made in areas such as housing, healthcare, and education. While certain freedoms may be restricted in pursuit of stability and economic growth, many Singaporeans appreciate these trade-offs for the relative safety and prosperity they experience. Comparing these aspects to the United States involves different historical, cultural, and political contexts. The U.S. champions democratic ideals but grapples with inequality and political polarization, whereas Singapore navigates its unique governance model to balance growth and stability. Highlighting the intellectual achievements of minority Indians at the Oxford Union serves to underscore the value of diversity and intellectual prowess in various settings. However, it doesn't necessarily equate to a complete reflection of democratic principles or the effectiveness of various governance models. Both the U.S. and Singapore have distinct approaches and challenges, making it essential to consider the broader contexts when discussing their respective merits and shortcomings.

There is almost certainly a very understandable explanation for the small decline in the average life number, which is that the US population has doubled past 70 years, and most came from a lower socio economic background. Surprising a veritable genius like Mahbubani, upon whose every syllable uttered, millions gawk and gape in total wonder, did not examine this aspect. It's also the case that human greed has reasserted itself to wild proportions, a fire out of control, and the US, being the place where rewards are the highest, is most prominently impacted. When remuneration began to be bonus based, the hitherto system vanished overnight, and annual take home, including stock options, now touch 100 millions each for many. Trump, who gave a huge tax break last time to the rich, has been reelected by the non rich, who presumably don't understand any of this, and modern society is utterly fascinated by audio/video systems, so the talking, moving image is now truth. As to democracy, probably the Scandinavian nations are the only ones closer to attempting to distribute its benefits to the maximum number. Lastly, these goals are targets towards which the human race moves, in fits and starts. Given the choice I would always choose the failing systems of the west, not the US, though, rather than, say, China,(despite the most wondrous and admirable achievements they have produced past 40 years), for whom as many know Mahbubani is the most fervent acolyte, bar none, and presumably is, handsomely rewarded by that country. Perhaps he may wish to go and live there. Sadly, uneven societies are not going anywhere. As to suffering populations, of course the billions under dictatorships, are, on a level of suffering, altogether on a different plane to that in the US.

If federal does really govern, that will mean, a swift control and extinguishing of the current LA fire disaster ... compare that to the swift and organized action of China to Tibet's earthquake ... the comparison is stark ! The so call "self correct" of the US system does not mean its good for the system. Simply put, the ROTI Prata policies of each party and sitting president would mean policy shit every 5 to 10 years and hence geopolitics risks to the world etc. Which result in the Oligarchs that are really leading and influencing the policies of US, through their legalised bribery of contribution to election campaigns and lobbying ..

Singapore democracy is also failing its people as the opposition parties had 40% of the peoples' votes but only have 10% of the parliamentary seats to represent them. In other words, the ruling party had only 60% of the votes but dominated 90% of the parliament.
@wf6456 сағат бұрын
40% of the votes DOES not mean 40% of the parliament seat. You do know the parliament seat goes to the MP in the constituents that won right ? ruling party though 60% of votes but they won most of the constituents 51% is a win, hence the seat for that constituent goes to the winning party duh ... Similarly in US, Trump winning the election does not mean that the senate or house is controlled by him/Republican. The senate / house representative have to fight for their seat each term too ...

Kishore not understand that we prefer to give "piloting" to an entrepreneur rather than to a bureaucrat civil servant... Normal, as a civil servant Kishore has always prospered on the backs of private companies.

US has only 1 political party, just 2 marketing campaigns. GOP & Dem are one & the same. Both are filled with right-wing neoliberal candidates with 95% of the same policies compete to see who can get more billionaire donors to be anointed CEO/commander-in-chief of the empire.

Speaking as a born and bred singaporean, i have no problem with that. No gun shooting, no drug abuse, no homelessness here. So all good, keep your liberal democracy.
