If every nation hides behind their small percentage of responsibility and waits for others to address climate change, no progress will be made. The advancements in technology and society that Konstantin Kisin benefits from were all initiated by individuals and nations who took the first step. My son, aged 30, patronizes me. He tells me about organic foods and carbon footprint and saving the planet. He is European. He doesn't realize the I did "all that" when I had the luxury of NOT being a parent to 3 kids. When I was a teenager in the 1980s I spoke down to my father, who had 5 children to feed. I went on about healthy this and healthy that. 10 years later, poverty stricken with a lousy husband, with a toilet outside and a bucket for my children to bath in, I was grateful for food and wood and medicine. I was 29 years old and no longer full of woke. (As if generation z invented it. What a joke.) I was a mum of 3 and living in a foreign country with a foreign husband. I couldn't speak the language and didn't have friends. Food. Heat. Medicine. That was my pyramid. So many woke kids don't even know what Maslow's hierarchy of needs (pyramid) is. The west is falling at a rapid rate. I returned to Africa in 2022 after 30 years in Europe. I don't want to freeze nor go hungry on the alter of wokeness. I didn't see a doctor since 2019 in the UK. Came back to Africa, saw a doctor and discovered I have an autoimmune disease which is ravaging my body. The doctors in the UK hid behind a screen for 2 years. So much for western civilisation. Fear riddles them. Here in Africa we still talk to each other without a screen. Here in Africa climate change isn't even a topic. Food. Heat. Medicine. Bringing up their children. Dreaming of a future for them. Well said young man. May you bring some sense to European youngsters.

@DontTreadOnTeachers I studied Critical Studies at the University in Birmingham in the UK, Sociology and Gender Studies modules, some CRT. I applied Marxist and feminist and postmodern theory to texts for my Contemporary Literature module in the English Department... The answers to climate change are not coming out of these departments. Leaps forward for society are not coming out of these departments, I'm afraid. These departments are trying desperately to make society think they are useful or valuable. They have very little utility, and actually do a great deal of harm from what I've seen. The Critical Theories have resulted in a denial of reality in favour of standpoint theory. The feminist theory I was taught is now used to put men in women's pri /sons. No, you can't "identify" as a scientist if you are not qualified. So no, STEM is not just another identity. If you want to discuss Critical Theories further, and why postmodern q weer theory project of "q weering" categories is not useful to tackling climate change, but actually actively dismantles and corrupts every other discipline it comes into contact with, we can have that conversation. "There is no such thing as "hard sciences." " -- hope you tell them that the next time you need to travel by airplane, or you're in hospital being kept alive by people who actually learned something valuable to society, taking practical steps to keep you healthy or alive... While you type your reply on a phone/computer, a device no one in a Gender Studies or English Lit department would know the first thing about creating. From what I encountered, it was a lot of very embittered people who could only dismantle and pull apart the works of great figures of the European past, works which they themselves could not create. And most were utterly boring white people consumed with guilt about being what they were.

I'm from South Korea, and in South Korea, too. This country was one of the poorest countries when my parents were born in late to early 60s. Now, it is economically doing pretty well in the world. The development, economic prosperity, was achieved by building and running A LOT OF factories where people to work and earn their living. This is the exact same path that China has taken since the 80s, Southern East countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia have taken since 90s or 00s, and India is taking now. "You are not going to get them to stay poor", DECLARED by Konstantin is the exact message that the developing "global south" wants to convey, and is conveying, to the "global north". The global south understands that environmental protection is important, but not at the expense of hindering or sacrificing economic development. So whatever Greta Thunberg or World Economic Forum blathers, Konstantin is right. Climate change does not depend on the global north. It is the global south that will determine the course of climate change, and the global south will prioritize economic development.

It is a good speech but very wrong point of view. Most pollution isn't done by poor people but by big companies that cut any possible corner to save a buck. Tell me how much pollution a poor person from China or India is going to create, yes he might start a business that is bad for the environment but that is in the future and in much smaller scale compared to other existing manufacturers. Right now there are many companies, factories, corporations that only care about profit and are owned or related to many of the wealthiest people of the planet but this guy points his finger at the poor people. It is the same with water problems in the US where they are doing what they can to make people less and less water because of drought yet the main problems is the agriculture of water heavy plants like avocado. Those farms are mostly owned by big companies not small farmers. So again the problem aren't poor people but BIG CORPORATIONS.
@Manlio.Cipullo Жыл бұрын
@@Resmund You do not understand the problem. The western countries are taking measures against this problem because are richer and developed. The developing countries are still struggling to get to the level that can give a stable income and wealth to the majority of their population: India, Brazil, China and soon african countries... They do not ave the luxury to think about climate change like our countries. His point is that we have to work harder in the tech and science to help those countries to get to that point and then trade for their adesion to protocols for climate preservetion. Protesting is useless, because we cannot change the situation by only operating in western countries, if those others will need create pollution to develop now and in the future, they will never concur until they reach that level of wealth...
@Cain353 Жыл бұрын
@@Manlio.Cipullo No he's absolutely right. Big corporations are by far and large the biggest polluters. And they'll do anything to save a buck. Most of them spend millions a year on lawyers and legislators to find loopholes or stop more restrictive emission laws. The "yeah but India" comments are so low brow. If we vote in legislators who actually care and stop these big corporations from using loopholes and, in America's case, actually tax those companies and use that money to invest in clean energy we can seriously reduce global emissions.
@dumbfailurekms Жыл бұрын
@@Manlio.Cipullo Ok so if it's impossible to create clean energy that is cheaper than energy that contributes to global warming, we should just accept defeat? At the end of day, (I'm using made up units to make the point as clear as possible) if 1 unit of clean energy costs $1.01 and 1 unit of "dirty energy" costs $1.00, corporations will take the dirty energy UNLESS public opinion/PROTESTS create a situation where less people will support their products because of that decision thereby making the clean energy more profitable. Protest and "complaining" needs to be employed in tandem with innovation. The idea that you shouldn't protest is laughable because he starts the speech talking about "freedom of speech" then he says you shouldn't complain. Also, it's horrific that poor people will need to front a large part of the burden in order to curb emissions, but if they keep slamming that big button and releasing CO2, ultimately it's the poor that will face much, much worse conditions as climate change's feedback loops begin to take shape and create conditions of scarcity, food water shortages, heat, and extreme weather. The solution is both for major lifestyles changes in the global south, as well as countries in the north working on new technologies and giving money and resources to poorer countries in order to fight climate change together. Conscious living. Don't buy into fast-fashion & the booming cosmetic industry, reduce red-meat intake, campaign for greener urban centres, carpool/ take public transportion, etc.

Over the last 4 or 5 years the Triggernometry podcast has helped save my sanity. Mainly because it’s made me aware of the silent majority. That’s us folks - we work full time, if there’s a job available, we pay out rent/mortgage, we love, treasure n guide our children and try to be useful members of our local society. Without out the silent majority, the noisy minority (empty vessels) of society would bring everything crashing down around our ears. They’re full of complaints but have no alternative, practical solutions. Wokery = a lot of talk, but, little or no walk. Thanks again Konstantin, am very grateful for your bravery and truth. Much respect to Francis too. ❤

Love how Oxford is providing a platform to discuss such difficult topics. I would love to study there one day

I don't understand how any topic is difficult to discuss. Lets have healthy discussion on any subject. It's definitely changed my views on some matters and made me more aware and empathetic on views i still don't agree with.

@@pollutionhead it's difficult today to have discussions with woke people because they speak entirely with emotion rather than rationality.

Actually, as I was watching this, it struck me that this topic is controversial enough to have equal numbers of people on both sides of the room. 🤦♀️

@@Uarehere Most are playing devil's advocate though; they're not actually woke. It's good practise.

Like I heard on CNN and MSNBC, Go woke Go Pedophile or just support them and hand your kids over!! I think that is how they said it?
