Hi Melissa!!:):) You know, I was ok confident UNTIL THIS OXID/RED STUFF!! UGGHHHH I'm good with figuring out the oxidation states, I'm just confused on how to write the equation that shows it. Like he will say write the equation for the species that has gained electrons. So 2Al2O3----4Al+3O2....Is Al oxidation number +4 and O oxidation number -4? And is Al being oxidized and O being reduced? is that part correct? THANK YOU!!:):):)

I know this is an old video but I loveee all of your videos and they've helped me so much. One thing I'm really struggling with is nomenclature and knowing the products of a chemical reaction (also with writing them by knowing the nomenclature). We have to know all of the steps for my class, figure out the type of reaction, figure out the products and write them correctly using nomenclature, balance the equation, write the ionic and then the net ionic. If you could do a step by step of this it would be soooo helpful! or if you already have one could you link it (if you see this)! Thanks so much!

Can you explain to me why on the oxidation samples at approx 39:00, why with the CO2 the O2 has a -2 charge? Is it not a diatomic atom? I thought O2 had a 0 charge? Thank you!
@melissamaribel
@melissamaribel 4 жыл бұрын
O2 by itself is a diatomic atom but once we see this in CO2 it is not a diatomic atom. We now individually look at each element so it's not O2 that we are looking at but just oxygen has an oxidation number of 2.

Hi Melissa, congrats on the success of your channel it is ver interesting indeed. I was trying to figure out if we had examples of redox cycles in nature? For instance I can't help thinking of the huge output of electricity that the sea must yield as it oxidises metals and carbon in the underground? But from there I am stuck, is there a correspondent reduction we can think of, are we going to need a base (like oil??) to antagonise sea water for a reverse process? I am stuck unless that electricity powers the sun, that powers life that retransforms - soil ? - into (reduced?) elements to restart the cycle?
@thewizardsofthezoo5376
@thewizardsofthezoo5376 2 жыл бұрын
Addon: Plants use CO2 and light and convert it into O2 and glucose, the opposite at night, but what if the bigger cycle did the same thing, the tides being the wash between acid and base exactly like a real redox generator?

@Ryan Why does reduction not mean the same as "reducing", ie giving up electrons?
@Mracle325i

Because electrons are negative, so to become MORE negative is to gain MORE electons.
