@@crouchingmarker I feel like Luke rules unfairly against Mike quite often. I remember in an earlier episode he was DM:ing he made Mike roll a DC 18(?) strength check to jump 5 feet lol. @@Sirfinchyyy The rules lawyer in me failed his death saves about half a campaign ago when I started playing more regularly and found just how many things are ignored for the sake of a good story and player experience. I have to respect it and I think it improves the experience for those playing which is all the justification you need but dear lord I could never run the game like this myself. The instinct to just start checking over character sheets to make sure they've done the maths right when the numbers sound wrong or "subtlely" hint at unused class abilities would be too much for me after maybe a week. It's like if someone played a barbarian who never used their mechanical rages. Narratively you could have excellent story there and it simplifies the game for the player hugely but I just wouldn't expect it to be as fun mechanically and would feel obliged to remind the player every time initiative is rolled unless they explain they're doing it on purpose and at that point why not just play a fighter? (Sure, you could argue you can clearly have fun failing your rolls, as Egbert has hilariously demonstrated but you don't want to be failing all of them or ones you specialise in ideally as something like Merilwen failing nature rolls or Corazon failing with rogue skills would feel pretty bad if it happened consistently because your player isn't adding their bonuses.) Full respect to Luke, Johnny and the rest of the players for making it work but much like those who dance in heels, that's just not something I think I can do.

I played with amnesia in Shadowrun once. The rest of the players were rescuing someone from a fortified hospital, that turned out to be me. GM had my character sheet, and every time I rolled something, he told me how many dice to roll. Turns out, I was a black guy who immediately started aggressively shouting in Italian (rough translation: "Who the ---- are you?". Ended the session by flawlessly piloting a hotwired SWAT helicopter purely on instinct.
@torgranael
@torgranael 2 ай бұрын
For anyone confused by "how many dice to roll", Shadowrun is a game where you roll a number of d6s equivalent to your relevant skill or attribute. Each d6 is counted separately, not added together. Each d6 that rolls >= to the the target number is called a success, and multiple successes amplify an effect you're trying to achieve (usually making something you do faster, or dealing more damage). It's also worth noting that any 6s are rerolled and added to that die's previous total, as that's the only way to achieve some of the hard TNs.

I ran a similar amnesia mechanic for a friend’s surprise birthday party. Everyone else had normal character sheets, but the guest of honor started with a blank sheet. I cut the actual character sheet into pieces and handed them to the player as checks were made and the relevant statistics came into play. This setup is cool, but plain old scissors will also work if you don’t the scratch off technology handy.

I love both of these channels but, as I mentioned in another comment, I was kind of disappointed that we didn't really get to see Sully shine here. It might just be a difference between the way the two groups play D&D - different table styles are a thing - or that the Oxventure crew are gamers/presenters more than actors, but it seemed like Mike and Jane spent 90% of the game speaking out-of-character to Luke rather than RP-ing with Sully and each other. And I can count on one hand how many times Jane even looked at Sully, let alone interacted with him or his character. So, despite the fact that he tried to start RP-ing with them a couple of times, M&J weren't really engaging with Sully much and that didn't give him much to bounce off of, resulting in him being way quieter and more sedate than fans of NRB and CN are used to seeing him. I hope the Oxventure gang relax into it and RP a little more in the next episode bc, otherwise, it feels like Sully's kind of wasted here. And that's a shame bc this version of the game is such a cool idea and has a lot of potential to be fun and funny. On a hopeful note, it did feel like they were warming up a little toward the end. I noticed that, late in the episode, Mike and Jane started moving from an "I tell the others what I saw" style of gameplay to actually telling them (sort of) in-character, so maybe the lack of interaction was just a nerves thing and, as they get more comfortable with these new characters, the weird conceit, and/or playing with a guest who's known for his improv and comedy, they'll settle in and RP with him a bit more.
@sartajhansi6127

@johnplaysgames3120 Yeah that did come through to me too, but in their defense I do also feel that not having Andy or luke who are usually the proponents for chaos in a lot of oxventures as playable members hurt it a lil too. Hopefully, this is the start of nrb members coming on oxventure and not a one-off.
@johnplaysgames3120
@johnplaysgames3120 2 ай бұрын
@@sartajhansi6127 Agreed, across the board. Especially that it might have been a different experience if Andy or Luke had been playing. They lean into the RP a lot more than Jane or Mike tend to (and, as you said, tend to bring the chaos, which is always fun). And, just to be clear: I'm not attacking the Oxventure gang. As I said, different tables have different styles of play and there's nothing wrong with that. Also, the Oxventure folk are not really actors or anything so it's a different set of skills/strengths. It's just interesting to see how much the table he's sitting at changes the way Sully is able to play, and - for fans of the RP at Chaotic Neutral - a little disappointing that he didn't get to go off and get silly like we're used to seeing. I definitely hope there's more crossover between the channels though (I always love seeing Ellen show up on NRB). And, tbh, I'd love to see Chaotic Neutral try some of these "D&D, But..." concepts as well bc I think they could have a lot of fun with them. The two channels are two great - if slightly different - tastes that have the potential to taste great together.

Oh heck yeah, two-parter! I was looking at the run time near the end and wondering how they were going to resolve everything by then. Sullivan is great, looking forward to seeing more of him. Jane reactions make me smile, as usual. And go figure Mike would excel in a game that hinges on players not knowing anything about their character sheets ;) I have some guesses as to what class everyone is playing... Jane has ki points, so that's got to be Monk, presumably teaching/training in a temple based on the flashback? Sullivan is giving Paladin vibes with the smiting (and the "you feel vaguely guilty", lol), though interestingly the flashback indicates a street urchin sort of backstory. I'm floundering on Mike a little. I think Ranger, based on innately knowing which way is north, and some other stuff. I had briefly thought Rogue, but the fact that he's not familiar with lockpicking rules that out, as does his history in law. Based on some of his skills I have to wonder if he was some sort of investigator before he was a judge. And of course, I wonder what all their crimes were, and what order the colour tiers go in after blue (which is presumably the most dangerous). Basically, riveting stuff, I'm super invested in finding out what led everyone to this point, good job DM Luke! Edit: Due to some very good points below, I have been talked back around to Rogue for Mike : )
@mnoelis
@mnoelis 2 ай бұрын
I briefly thought Ranger for Mike but ruled that out as Rangers are half casters, like Paladin, and Mike doesn't have any magic. I'm leaning towards Rogue as they aren't forced to take lock picking, it's just common, and I'm, like, 95% sure there's an investigator rogue subclass
@mnoelis
@mnoelis 2 ай бұрын
Plus, Astarion from Baldur's Gate 3 is the roguest rogue to ever rogue and he was a magistrate in his backstory so being involved in law previously isn't completely rule rogue out
@dallydaydream

@@mnoelis Oh that's a fair point, Mike seemed to have abilities rather than spells. And if there's an investigator subclass of rogue, that does make a lot of sense for the skills he has. Thanks for the info!
@SolaScientia
@SolaScientia 2 ай бұрын
Ooh, I hadn't thought Monk for Jane. I was thinking maybe a fighter like she said, but I'm playing a Dragonborn Fighter in BG3 and I just leveled up when I chose my subclass I was choosing spells and had the option of getting burning hands. I think I turned it down, because Wyll also has burning hands. Sullivan I feel sure is a Paladin. I'm torn on Mike as well, but I'm leaning toward Rogue as well.

@consolescrub4031 oh I freely admit this is specialised knowledge not everyone has. That's why I like the Oxventurers and Johnny. @consolescrub4031
@consolescrub4031 2 ай бұрын
@@AlmondLBD Indeed it's a casual approach which I find endlessly interesting on account of how the game can remain fun even when you remove and omit so many mechanics (I'm still faintly terrified of trying to run a monk without ki but considering they had previously not tracked spell slots, there's so much you could change if you wanted to). I do think ultimately the DM still needs to know a lot about the game or have an assistant such as one of the other players who knows things and is willing to explain them in a helpful manner. You could run the game without opportunity attacks, spell slots or even conventional hp if that's not something you're comfortable with (good to clarify that last one at session 0 though) but it helps if someone can explain to new players what they should be rolling and what they add to their rolls. Or they can just play like Mike if everyone has fun that way.

Allow me to take my guesses Paladin for our Aaracokra Friend, thought it might also be artificer. This one isn't confirmed. Inquisitive Rogue for our Tabaxi, that one is clearcut (the first ability shown was the Inquisitive Rogue ability) The Monk is harder. They clearly have deflect missiles and *are* clearly a monk, however there was a mention of a feeling of the arcane weave. The obvious guess is Four Elements Monk (they get burning hands and the like), but I got a feeling it might be a Monk + Wizard/Sorcerer Multiclass

Literally driving myself mildly insane trying to figure out where I know Jane's face from. Looked her up, realised that I have occasionally watched Outside XBox videos before, and her voice made such an impression on me that I remembered what she sounded like before hearing her speak in this video. Then got confused why they were introducing Sully being from a different channel, but not her. Then realised about ten minutes later that I recognised the other two guys too, and realised what the Ox in Oxventure stands for. What a rollercoaster!

I once played a character with amnesia and the DM had my sheet and I had to keep notes and just try stuff to figure out what I could and couldn't do. I ended up being a doctor and the group's medic. Had to collect books and handle tools to regain memories and abilities. It was a load of fun. Just make sure everyone you play with and especially the DM is ok with the set up.
