Thanks for the intro on priorities and skills, when using priorities marking the miner up on digging is great, I normally then mark the other dupes down on the digging priority to help keep tidying etc up that others dont have as a priority and stops other dupes stealing the digging that needs doing from the miner. Great thinking with the nature park, definitely adding that to my next start also need to reconsider my use of hand washing, been putting them in automatically from when food poisoning was terrible, probably dont need it early game now 😃

I didn't learn about the nature reserve thing until a bit too late. I've had a strip of dirt just above my mess hall ready and waiting (I plan to put their food storage pit at the end of the reserve so they have to run through there to get dindins, but after nearly 200 cycles I *still* haven't had a pip as a choice for printables, lol. I just need a pip, one single pip :( The end bit about skills was helpful too! I didn't know about the research thing. Might throw some points in there for a few if their morale allows it, although I'm definitely at a point of them being maxed out in quite a lot of trees.

I personally prefer to take the dupes with a +1 in 3 skills. Early game isn't all that important, everything gets done quickly anyways, but I'm always glad when I get to mid game and I have dupes with several interests. Picking their interested skills is a free +6 morale bonus, and they level up their skills anyways. So in my colony, everyone can do multiple tasks, it may prevent me from setting up systems where dupes are stuck to their specific working place, but it's nice to always have multiple people available when you need a specific job done.
@gordonbrown774 жыл бұрын
I'm generally the same these days, I'll pick up single skilled ranchers/farmers etc from the printing pod later as thats all they will tend to be doing but first dupes I like to have a range. I like someone with digging/operating/supplying over a dedicated builder. Builders may still need to dig out surrounding tiles so improved digging is useful to avoid them having to wait for a digger, the extra carrying capacity means less running from builds to pick up materials and it gives moral for getting them into mechatronics. The first dupe will do so much building they will eventually catch up anyway. Unlike mechatronics there is nothing that requires points in building skills to actually make. I feel +7 research isn't much use after a while, they end up being ahead of what you need and eventually there is no more research left anyway. Its nice initially but longer term I feel is a waste. I find myself going researching/decorating in the DLC for that one, later I can send them to a new colony temporarily and they can do the telescope, research vents and before going home do some sculpting in the living areas.
@LucyTheBox4 жыл бұрын
@@gordonbrown77 Having someone with +7 in research can actually be worthwile since it greatly increases the rate at which you level up skills. It's not uncommon to have my dedicated researcher become better at constructing than my dedicated builder

I found more helpful to begin the game with two dupes having digging and construction +3 as they would mostly be doing these tasks together earlier in the game. Anytime we are digging, we will be putting ladders or floor tiles, and this helps a lot for them to build as they dig, versus some dupes idling around because they are way too specialized, or taking actions too slow as they are not as efficient. The dedicated, specialized skills makes much more sense when you have your small little army - 6 or more.
@Magnet_MD4 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting thought. Only downside there is both of them will do those jobs less effectively than if they were split and more specialized. There are also instances in which you may want to dig or build without the other, but you're right that a lot of it in the early game happens at the same time.
@hquest4 жыл бұрын
@@Magnet_MD yup. The main benefits of a dedicated highly skilled comes with the atmo suit - they are, hands down, amazing. Until then, a combo worker gets most of the jobs done slightly more efficiently.
@gordonbrown774 жыл бұрын
@@Magnet_MD I've had times I've wondered why the builder isn't building something and realised its the hard tile they can't dig out as the diggers have decided to go to the other side of the map. I'd rather my builders have taken the digging skills and do both. The first dupes will over time gain the skills anyway, longer term the lower skills aren't an issue. I'd be more inclined to take the +7 later if I need them for a specific job so they are caught up a bit.

I choose dupes with 2+ interests, but they have to make sense together. Like, for instance, digging+construction+athletics, because a miner many times needs to build a ladder or a wall while mining and they are good skills to have, while boosting morale too. I also have my researcher be a medic too, my cook like farming as well, and my farmer like ranching too... etc. I spend a lot of time on the choose dupes screen. 😅

I have two questions after watching this video, first is " janitor " what skills are needed for this? you listed janitor but i'm very new to the game and have no idea how to hire a janitor, and second once you brought up the sandbox mode " cheat " when you used the dig tool I noticed the materials instantly got mined and a dupe didn't have to dig them, when I use the dig tool in sandbox they still dig it, how do you instantly mine with out a dupe?
@Magnet_MD4 жыл бұрын
Hey hey! Sorry, I am being a little casual with that term. They specialize in the "tidying" skills and are prioritized for "tidying" errands over all other types. In the sandbox mode, hit CTRL + F4 and it will enable a bunch of stuff like instant research, instant skills, instant digs, instant deconstructs, etc.
@djjd85204 жыл бұрын
@@Magnet_MD So I guess I have another question since I now know the janitor is the tidying skill, I haven't fully figured out how to do flushing toilets and plumbed sinks so I use regular sinks and outhouses, and no one is emptying or fixing the toilets, I put the priority to 8 on the toilets and I made sure I picked a dupe with tidying and I have to use the emergency errand to get it fixed, what am I doing wrong?
@Magnet_MD4 жыл бұрын
@@djjd8520 Hmm, I don't know. Did you change the priority for that duplicant specifically? If you open the priorities screen you can make sure you have at least 1 duplicant on high priority for each important type of task. That may be it, and also try to use high priorities sparingly. You can also click on a duplicant to see what tasks they are considering and how important they consider each of them.

i came here to find some tips for managing duplicants. maybe its not a thing, except for priorities, but i was curious how to let the dups be more efficient. breaks, automations with sensors, runways, atheltics, increase stats with specific actions? so many possibilities, so many open questions. for me less is more. instead of overproducing food and dupes and electricity - i would wish for the "most efficient organized, automated colony - using all the tricks & traits" - i guess i would not find that in a beginners tut. :)

One thing that always confuses me is why the bonuses are not permanent. Even though I built a Great Hall and have a Nature Reserve on the way to my bathroom, some dupes have the bonus and some not. Few cycles later, it shows up again, and disappear from others. What defines the frequency of those bonuses? Another thing: around cycle 250+ I have dupes with 3-4 extra points that I didn't spend due to Morale constrains. Do you always spend your points until the end?
@Magnet_MD3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, these are good questions. You should get the bonuses each time they enter the Nature Reserve, or when they eat in the Great Hall. As far as I can tell, a majority of the buffs for Morale last for an entire cycle. You could be not getting the buffs for the Great Hall if there's a problem with the decor item (sometimes I'll have an air pressure or temperature problem and it'll make my plant stop growing), or there could be a problem with the room itself. Same goes with the Nature Reserve. Debugging could be done by just watching a single duplicant throughout a day and seeing what is going on with their morale. Without being able to see it, I can only guess. As far as the extra skill points, you'll eventually have way more skill points than you can afford to assign. This is pretty normal. There are other ways you can increase duplicants' morale in the later stages of the game (longer breaks, better decor, recreational items, better food quality, etc), but you'll eventually hit a point where you will have skill points leftover and the only skills you can acquire for that dupe are pretty useless beyond a duplicant or two that are specialized for it (like medicine, decorating, rocket piloting, or cooking).

Imo the morale system is a bit too easy. It makes things like maintaining table salt and showers kind of pointless because you get so much more morale from other things.

I agree, you eventually reach a point where there's not much of a reason to keep investing in morale upgrades. Some of the buildings give decent morale but they take forever to use.
