If ‘still moving’ is not allowed - because ‘still’ here doesn’t mean stationary, but continuous - then how come you allow ‘pretty ugly’? Because ‘pretty’ there doesn’t mean good-looking, but quite.

Sahir & Magsat: i go with not an oxymoron because I'm 68 and my friends and I have used pretty to mean something similar to "quite" for all of my "pretty" long life, and in the case I just proposed "quite little long" life (or anything else) is technically not an oxymoron because although "quite little" and "long" are opposites, one is more than one word. We're looking for paired opposites, correctly named "antonyms".

"Act naturally" is really more like his example of "still moving." Act in that case doesn't mean to pretend to be something else, it simply means to behave. "Behave naturally" makes perfect sense. Anyone familiar with constitutional jurisprudence has heard my favorite: "substantive due process." Substantive law is law which is not about process, e.g. the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.

Not exactly an oxymoron, but 'expect the unexpected' is a good ol' fashioned contradiction in terms. When you expect the unexpected you're expecting the expected because you stopped expecting the expected as soon as you began to expecting the unexpected. You know when you say a word so much it stops making sense... is expected even the word I'm looking for? Oh god, I did this with 'remote' once.

Is it an oxymoron when you say "his logic" or "her logic"? Because either something is logic or not. When you say "his logic" or "her logic", you imply that the logic of the person you are talking about, is wrong(=illogical). So "his" or "her" is contrary to logic.
@HoshiHikari8 жыл бұрын
I would say no since the two words in isolation aren't contradictory to each other.
@keeroogaming22658 жыл бұрын
HoshiHikari But doesn´t the word "his/her" contradict the word logic in this case? Because it automaticaly implys that the logic of this person differs from logic in general and therefore "his/her logic" contains a logical failure, which makes "his/her logic" illogical.
@HoshiHikari8 жыл бұрын
I get what you mean, but if you isolate the words, they aren't inherent opposites to each other. Like in "awfully good," awful and good are inherent opposites.

That's exactly what I meant it's super common, yes English has simple yet atrocious grammar, yes English speakers are given little opportunity to learn other languages, but for foreigners, only the former reason applies and it's more than counterbalanced by the fact that it's everywhere... just everywhere. I really think that actually, the person that can tell you the most about any language is the one that knows it as well as a native would but among as many others as possible, related or not.

Yes as I said Spanish is fundamentally easier and one of the easiest I know. But English still is easier than any language I know because if I want to learn Dutch, I'll have a hard time finding a good show that I would want to watch or subs or internet discussions/forums since I believe ALL Dutchmen speak perfectly English for example. And if most native English speakers have trouble with it, learning another Germanic or Latin language would do them (you too :D) a lot of good. It helps immensely

In Swedish we have a few that I think would qualify. Like the word "jätteliten". "jätte" means "giganticly" and "liten" means "small". And the guy who tried to be funny saying that "Swedish summer" is an oxymoron should know that the Swedish summer is the best day of the year. Or actually, we have a painfully warm and humid summer for about two to three months every year.
