In this video, we take a closer look at Ozempic and its potential impact on fertility. Ozempic is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes, and it works by regulating blood sugar levels through mimicking the hormone GLP-1.
We'll discover some common side effects of Ozempic and explains how it can potentially help individuals struggling with obesity and PCOS, which can negatively and/or positively impact fertility.
I'm also sharing some of the research I found on the potential benefits of Ozempic for individuals with infertility issues. Finally, I'll share my recommendation on the use of Ozempic for fertility treatment.
Overall, this video provides a valuable overview of Ozempic, its mechanism of action, common side effects, and its potential use as a fertility treatment.

3 years unprotected and never conceived. 2 months on ozempic and I found out I was pregnant (I have PCOS). Delivered a healthy baby girl 5 months ago. I am convinced I got pregnant due to this medication! Was never heavily overweight but had super irregular periods - this regulated me to a perfect 4 week cycle. I would take this medication again in a heartbeat when I am ready for another kid!

Metformin along with diet and exercise seems to be a safer alternative if you are planning to conceive and breastfeed. Save all the injections for later when there are more studies and research on this 😅.

After real bad side effects with metformin and having no luck with pregnancy these past years my OBG is recommending ozempic and birth control for 6 months and then try for a baby. But she doesn’t recommend taking while trying to conceive. She believes I’m a good candidate for Ozempic to try and control my pcos and help regulate my hormones. It’s kind of a last resort in my case fingers crossed it works.

I know that we shouldn’t be taken semaglutide while being pregnant bc my provider for the medication of semaglulitide let me know that the moment I know that I am pregnant I have to stop but now I am confused bc I went for a pap smear this pass week n I spoke to my provider and let her know I was on the medication and she said that it was not good that I was am suppose to be on birth control while taking any weight lost medication but I continue to explain to her that I have pcos n I don’t have regular cycle and that I needed help on tracking cycles n she didn’t give no help at all or explication so how can I even trust about the weight lost medication what would u recommend?

So torn weighing out the pros and potential cons. Do you still recommend discontinuing Ozempic even if it’s treating insulin resistance in Type 2/ PCOS? Seems like that could interfere with the ability to conceive but also, malformations are scary 😧 Any idea if the fetal malformations were with normal doses or potentially related to decreased food intake vs the medication?

Some additional thoughts… given the half life of a week, it takes semaglutide approximately 5-7 weeks to no longer present in the circulation. Likely because of that, the manufacturer recommends waiting at least two months after stopping semaglutide before trying to conceive. It sounds like from what you said some providers prefer to be more conservative, which makes sense. I also got the impression that as of now it’s unknown if the fetal effects were due to the medication, or from weight loss during pregnancy. I am going to go ahead and assume there won’t be a trial in pregnant women in this space, but I imagine we will get more observational data with time … the manufacturer has a registry to monitor outcomes in pregnancy as well which providers can reach out to.

@@drlorashahine Thank you for this video. I have PCOS as well as Endometriosis and my significant other and I had been trying to have a baby for several years. I got pregnant and found out because I had an appointment to see my OBGYN for a regular annual, which for me includes ultrasounds. I didn't know I was pregnant at the time. The ultra sound tech kept trying to say something, but the doctor didn't tell me I was pregnant. Instead, he handed me birth control pills and told me to start them right away. The tech finally said aren't you going to tell her about her "mass"? He said oh it's nothing to worry about. She came running out as I was leaving and said go to the hospital now and gave me a copy of the report. I looked up the "mass" and it was a baby... I went home and took a pregnancy test and it was positive. I texted the OBGYN and sent him a picture of the positive pregnancy test and said its a good thing I didn't start taking the birth control you gave me. Nevertheless, we ended up miscarrying at the end of the first trimester. In addition, my cousin and his wife were trying for 7 years. They tried everything, IVF anything they could. The doctor finally told them to stop. That it wasn't going to happen for them and they should look into adoption. My cousins wife has some health issues and they told her to focus on that and losing weight to get healthy. She was put on Wegovy and within 2-3 months not only did she lose weight... SHE WAS PREGNANT and in her 40's. That gave me so much hope. Baby Carter was just born on 7/20/2023, at 7 lbs 6 oz. What a blessing, her sister said that she knows about 5 other women that had fertility issues and other health issues and once they started Wegovy they all got pregnant and had healthy baby's. So, I definitely think there's something to it. All on Wegovy though.... none on Ozempic. I hope others feel hope from this as well.

Hi! I have Type 2 Diabetes and am taking 1000mg of Metformin (500 at a time, 2xs during the day), and also take Rybelsus 7mg 1x a day. My husband and I go in for our IVF consult next month (we have male factor infertility, my tests all came back normal and I had 1 successful pregnancy in the past). Do you feel it would be okay to continue these medications for someone attempting IVF in the near future?

Amazing video. For women with obesity that are going through IVF- What about using ozempic to lose weight for a few months prior to IVF egg retrieval and then stopping 2 months before embryo transfer? Or is there thought that it may reduce response to IVF stimulation?

When they say you shouldn’t take this when trying to conceive do they just mean the pregnancy part? I’m considering doing IVF to use my eggs but would then use a surrogate. Do you think it would be safe to use ozempic in that case?

Great question - one issue to consider is these meds slow gastric emptying- important to tell your doctor and anesthesiologist if you’re taking - may increase risk of aspiration at egg retrieval
