Dude, nice find. I've been doing diagnostics since fuel injection and electronics started turning up in our vehicles (30+ years) and I'd like to think I got pretty good at it. Pretty much retired now, the CAN stuff started leaving me behind as I got older. I kind of understand it but I no longer have the patience to follow it through. Nice to see there is still room in the diagnostic field for the old "knock test".

With all the wiring in vehicles it's easy to see how some wires make contact with metal there goes the CAN line or something else. In the 2003-2004 F250 and F350 vehicles the 3 wires going up into the column mounted shift handle for the overdrive button at the top end of the shift handle would get cut by the steel handle opening near the base of the shift handle and turn on the MIL light. Rerouting the wires with an added loop and some split loom solved the problem. Wiring at the back of engines can be cut by engine movement or a bad design pulling the harness to tight and on and on and on. Good one Oz!

Npr, fixed with a bit of electrical tape...fantastic diagnosis. Most workshops and customers dont have the patience or willingness to spend the time and $$$ to figure this out. Great job. The dealer could have "fixed" this by installing a completely new wiring harness...😂😂😂

Your diagnostic process and the "find" of the problem is very impressive. How many hours were billed to the customer vs how many hours did you have into this job?

I went and billed 6 hours which included tear down, repair and putting it back together

Something I learned many years ago, your time is valuable, don't give it away. As long as the customer knows up front that it could be an expensive job and you find and fix the problem you are justified in charging the time that it took. Especially if no one else could fix it.
