Do Ozone generators really work as well as they're rumored to? Let's put it one to the test and see if it can get the musty smell out of an old set of tool bags.

You are adding fresh air with the ozone so you end up with a very low concentration of ozone. If you get rid of the hole in the box and let the machine recycle the air the concertation will increase. You are diluting the ozone by pushing fresh air into the box.

YOU evidently do not know what the hell you are talking about. Ozone generators use fresh air - OXYGEN - to create ozone. This demonstration PROPERLY provides the generator with OXYGEN which is necessary to produce ozone. Simply recycling the ozone rich air will not permit the generator the fresh air it needs to work....

What ozone machines do is add an oxygen molecule to the air. By “refreshing” the air you are removing the extra o2 molecule.

U were sucking in fresh air from outside. That’s not what u r supposed to do sir. Put it in a sealed box and let it run with the items u have and it will pull the elements from those items and then saturate them with o3. This is my opinion.

Is Ozone just a temporary fix? Or does it permanently kill the odor and never have to do it again? I have a rental property and I'm contemplating replacing the carpet or just doing some heavy-duty ozone work with it. My fear is that it only last two or three weeks and then to tenant has to deal with the horrible smell I'm trying to avoid having pissed off tenants

@@macknumber9 it's permanent, but if the carpet is the source of the problem, then it needs to be replaced. You can always try to get the carpet professionally cleaned, and then place a dehumidifier to quickly dry the cleaned carpet and then use the ozone generator for a good full 24 hours.

i personally have been to an Inside a Service Pro(fire damage/water mitigation national companey). most customers can't go there. They had 2 rooms that just had small ozone gens in them. the rooms were for books,smaller furniture etc. they would not use that if it did not work.

It may be possible that the ozone is reacting with some of the synthetic polymers in the treated materials. Depending on the chemical composition of materials which you are subjecting to ozone treatment, it's possible to increase offgassing of volatile oxidation byproducts.

Good answer and was my thoughts as well... using a "sniff test" to tell "if it's working" isn't really affective. The science behind ozone is well established, this test is kind of a joke.

I use mine for our rental property due to the neighbor's smoking habit leaving a slight smoke smell. For me the ozone generator removes the smell for a period of a few weeks and then the smell comes back. This is mostly due to the ongoing smoking from the neighbor. I think if the "problem" was removed from the equation, the generator is confirmed to be doing it's job.

I have a ozone generator. I have a snorkel that pumps it in the partially closed window. I tape the gaps to mostly seal it and the generator sits on top of the car. I crack the caddy corner window and run it 8 hrs. Am I doing it wrong? I figured that it would work better than putting it inside and closing it up because it would use up all the oxygen in the car very quickly.

Hey, so my dad and I just used an ozone generator ( which I now regret cause it’s just so strong. The smell is strong. ) we did 2 rooms and left the house for 8 hours for both rooms.. and then turned the machine off after 8 hours of it being on and went out for 4 hours to let the house air out and opened a few windows too. The smell is still here not as strong but def can smell it. Will it have any negative health effects on us that u might know of?

Don't breath it in. It can harm. Lungs. 8 hours might not be enough. If you can, seal off the room you are doing with plastic including vents. Run it in that room. If you smell ozone leave the house open windows...

I built my ozone generator and there are no plates to wear out or parts to replace. I used it on a vintage vacuum tube caddy and all the musty smell is gone.

Can I ask how do you generate ozone without the plates? The plates are the biggest problem in the operation of the ozone generation. They spoiled every 2 to 3 months. With the virus around, now I bring a small ozone generator with 5 v supply and 0.4 to 0.7 amp in a small box, sniff it every 10 to 20 seconds, just to make sure it will be hard environment that cud freeze the virus protein. Have been using it for 2 years

The whole machine is supposed to be inside a enclosed sealed space. Not fucking upside down where only half way is in. The unit is supposed to keep re sucking and recycling the same air it cleaned over and over. But your experiment introduced new air always. So it didn’t work.

Your experiment is however flawed form the very start. That box is not a closed environment. You need the gas to fill it up fully, and it is now escaping from the hole. You should somehow seal it. Believe it or not, most of the gas is simply going out form the pressure of that opening.

The purpose of ozone is doing it after you remediate the mold completely. It's a final step to eliminate the odor and also. Minimal spores left..

To be honest, the ozone generator / machine I bought is amazing. I have used on my car, at my house, and my garage. Everytime I use it, the smell (bad odors) and mold goes away. It is rather efficient and with little effort.

Did you try the VOC test before after? Some say oxidation makes materials return even more VOCs.

@@MaximumEfficiency I do not know what VOC test is. I would have to research a little bit more. From a quick search, I gather it is quite common to perform on vehicles, especially new ones to assess the amount of organic matter they release - that "new car smell". However, it is typically conducted in a close Laboratory environment, as there are many organic matter around you, including yourself. Thanks for your comment.

Next time, I would place crumpled newspaper in all of the compartments. This would open up the area and separate the sides of the compartments, allowing better ozone flow during the treatment.

I just bought the same ozone generator recently on Amazon (Enerzen 40,000 mg model, about $70) to get a musty smell out of my 4Runner (after leaving the stupid driver's window down all night in a downpour!). The musty smell wasn't overwhelming but definitely noticeable when first opening the car door after being closed for several hours. I ran the generator maybe 3 different times over a 2-week period, starting at about 20 minutes and going up to 30 and 45 minutes for the other treatments. The smell is gone from the car now, even as the weather is starting to warm up.

As already mentioned your only blowing the ozone across it and out the top with a bunch of fresh air and probably on a percentage basis I would think your lucky to have %1 ozone stay on the items to remove smells. Your not probably getting it even into the pockets of the tool bag. When doing cars they close up the doors etc and run the machine. It coverts all the air inside to Ozone pretty much and floods the car with it. May be some fresh air creep in though some cracks and vents etc but not much. Also a plant left in said car would die. If you put a plant in your box it probably wouldn't, too much pure air getting in. And to some one wondering if it is still dangerous some time later after airing off the room etc, yeah nope anything that was covered with ozone is normal after a short time, but air out the room well b4 going into it.

I have a High Frequency facial device that uses ozone. It has electrodes that zap and can smell funny at times. Anywho, I’ve had it for a few years and didn’t use it. I got it because I have a lot of scarring on my face and arm. Well, yesterday I used it for the first time and the difference is soo noticeable to me I’m stunned. I used an essential oil that has healing qualities and the ozone infused it into my skin. Remarkable! So I figure as long as your machine produces ozone, I believe it’ll work 😊

I have no idea why you're not getting great results. I bought one like yours, but it does have a blue light in it, but still under $75. I had musty basement smell this fall, no water leaks or seepage, sprayed entire basement with hospital grade disinfectant ( and fungicide) and still the smell. Ran the ozone for 2 hours and smell was 90% reduced. Ran for another 2 hours and it's gone (1200sq foot house NOT including unfinished basement)! I love using it after dinner for a few minutes to get the food smell out. Yes I know its dangerous, but it's literally 5min max in the other room. I use my back porch for cooking in the crockpot because I just hate smelling food when im not eating, I put it back there for a half hour and no smells!

@@22chachalaca no not since October when I first used it. But there's no water seepage either (which would lead to ongoing smell). I think it was due to no AC or heat running in the mild fall weather for a month or so, plus it's a 100+ year old house. I still love using it for cooking smells!

Take fesh air(O2) from outside not from inside. Inside is a small q of O2 and is transformed in small q of o3. If you take o2 from outside the q of o3 will be rising all time. The oxidation will keep going until no more.

This would be far less effective than all other treatments meant for fleas.. Your home would need to be sealed off, nothing else alive could be in the home, and finally you would likely deteriorate every electrical cable and rubber gasket in your home and cause toxic offgassing from most plastics in your home at the level you'd need in order to use it as an insecticide. It would be inefficient and could possibly leave your home smelling godawful due to unknown chemical byproducts. My recommendation would be to consult with a pest professional before applying any sort of treatment, especially treatments not intended for pest control. Good luck to you, I hope you get your fleas under control!

Ozone will kill the bed bugs, but you have to open up every space they hide in so that the ozone will reach them. Switch and receptacle plates don't allow for a lot of air exchange, so they are sitting in little pockets of normal air where the ozone won't reach them. Same thing with mattresses. To effectively get them you would have to have a large generator running for a prolonged period of time (think a week or more) in a very well sealed house for the ozone to make it to all the nooks and crannies they hide in. I think ozone would be very effective to add to bed bug treatment, but as a standalone solution it isn't practical at all. Where it would really shine is bagging up mattresses and such with a generator inside to kill them. Or having multiple generators, one to a room and pulling all the electrical plates off the walls. You would still need to use the other methods as well though.

I have "successfully" made my bedroom "safe" to sleep in by running my ozone generator on a 24 hour timer (36,000 mg/hr for 2 hrs on and 2 hrs off) while out of town for 3 days, leaving the bedroom door open to fill my entire condo with ozone. The bedroom certainly having the highest concentraton. I do realize that the ones hiding in cracks, crevices, wall outlets ans switch plates will not get a full dose of Ozone. I will need to coax them out and seal those hiding spaces. I have a lot of clutter in the entire condo, allowing many hiding places for the bugs, so it is not being 100% effective. Arriving home, the ozone content in my condo was very high and it took hours for the place to air out enough to stay in there. I have been sleeping in the bedroom since the first 3 day treatment and instead of getting the usual barrage of bites, I have only got a few, in several days, which I may have got from the bed bugs that have moved to my car. I need to clean out the car and give it a treatment, also. Once all the clutter, in my condo is removed, I expect much better results.

Ozone can neutralize existing odor. If something continues to put that odor into the air it will appear again. Ozon can neutralize it but it will happen again. It's a loop. Wash you things, dude! Well, actually ozonizing can help with the strong smell of shoes after the exercising for example. It will helps until next time you exercise or just wait. It can reduce smell 10x times but the shoes would still be... unfresh) So yes it helps but you should use it wisely. Ozone do what it's do. No more no less.

Soo i checked into a hotel room in a non smoking hotel.. and someone had obviously been smoking in it.. i told the hotel ill change rooms after work.. they said they would put a smoke removal machine in it.. i said ok.. thinking whatever.. and came back and the room smells a little funny but not masked smell.. and doesnt smell like smoke.. they used some kind of ozone machine in it.. soo i watched this video..

Ozone decays very fast, so the fan bit isn't necessary. Ozone will not stick to an object, only cause a chemical reaction clinging to dirt in the air or on the object. Ozone is what's suppose to cause weather checking on a car tire, so it's very reactive.

Should put the ozone machine in a completely sealed container. For example, put in car and close the doors to run it. This test defeats the purpose and at best does about a quarter of the intention.

I dont think it lasts a long time. Half hour and the ozone smell dissapates in couple of minutes. Run for 2 hours and it takes a bit longer. Depends on air movement and ventilation. It does have a clean smell like chlorine but it's different, more pleasant. I obviously am averse to smells and i dont mind it at all! It's like letting fresh spring air in the house after a long winter to me.

The ozone generator also needs a supply of fresh air. Not a lot so that most of the ozone escapes, but it does need a source of fresh air.

NO... It doesn't "need a supply of fresh air". I don't know how you came to believe what you wrote but someone gave you some bum info. The reason the video maker's tool bags still stink is because he was introducing fresh air through the back end of the unit which defeats the unit's purpose.

If there is mode in the material, you should not be sniffing it. You don't want that stuff in your lungs man. The smell test is not appropriate for this situation. You need to get some type of ultraviolet light to enhance the mold particles then run the machine to see what happens. Remember the particles are more dense on a membrane and looser or freer when airborne.
