I had a dear musician friend, from the Cameroon and he not only looked like Slim . But had the natural flair of the great man too.

I saw Slim Gaillard at Birdland in NY when I was in the Navy in 1952 and I used to go there every night when I had liberty from the ship. I thought he was great even though he was not the headliner at the club, but a second act. He was great and I will always remember his jive.

V. Cool how he spent his later (and final) years in London: where we all love an eccentric! And an eccentric genius to boot....

Listening to this while I skim 'On the road', researching for a literature essay, makes for excellent background.

I think Harry Secombe of The Goons may have listened to the way the bass player sings in the first song!

During the war his IQ was tested and when he scored in the genius range the US military immediately drafted him, sent him to flight school, he crushed it, then they sent him to the Pacific and he flew B-26 medium bombers in the Pacific. He must have seen some things because he NEVER talked about it.
