I opened for Ricky in Norfolk, NE in 1971. He had his new band and they sounded, to me, as good as Crosby Stills and Nash. They had Excellent Harmonies, and a lot of Great new material. Nothing like what he had done before. He was boo'd off the stage with that band at Madison Square Gardens, and wrote "Garden Party" about that event. It became one of his biggest Hits ever. (I got to try on his big fur coat that he wore on TV.)

Ozzie (and Rick, David, and Harriet) were all exactly the same persons in real life as they appeared to be on the TV show - really very nice people (although I never did encounter Ozzie wearing one of his signature cardigan sweaters on the beach in Laguna) I knew Ozzie, together with Ricky and Ozzie's brother Don (screenwriter - The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, The Love Bug movies, etc.) from the mid-60s onward. We all played volleyball together at Victoria Beach in Laguna. I met Harriet a few times - a very sweet, nice lady - and met David once. The entire family was extremely nice. Ozzie (and I assume Harriet) was a teetotaler and lived a quite healthy lifestyle - he would routinely would swim out about 200 yards offshore and then swim a half-mile up and down the beach each day regardless of how big the surf was. During the summer of 1970, when I was the lifeguard at Blue Lagoon Beach, Rick's kids (twins Gunnar and Matthew who were three years old at the time and who were introduced to me by Mark Harmon (Chris Nelson's real-life brother)) used to sit on my knees - very nice kids. Ozzie died on 6/3/75 and his brother Don, who was an invited guest at our wedding, was unable to attend due to Ozzie's funeral. We recently attended the "Ricky Nelson Remembered" rock show starring Gunnar and Matthew in a tribute to their dad - great show and highly recommended to all.

Ozzie Nelson was Red Skelton's bandleader on radio. Harriet was there too, as vocalist. Both were in some of Red's sketches. In 1944 Red was drafted into the Army, leaving a void on the radio network's schedule. Ozzie created a domestic sit-com with his wife and two child actors as their sons. It was called "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet." In 1952 a film, "Here Come the Nelsons," was released. In the fall of 1952 the radio show moved to television, using their real life sons instead of actors. The TV series lasted 14 seasons..

At 8:20--Ozzie and his brother, Don, made a film together. The picture of Don that's shown is that of Don Nelson alright but not Ozzie's brother. Rather it is of the Don Nelson (born in 1940, the same year that Ricky was born) that played professional basketball for a number of teams, most notably with the Boston Celtics. Oh, the woes of robotics.

Yes. The Don Nelson shown here was also a successful NBA coach having led the Bucks, Warriors, Knicks and Mavericks. He was coach of the year at least twice. He is alive and well and living in Hawaii. Last I heard or seen of him he had grown a long beard and was growing "grass," yes he is a marijuana farmer! He and frequent visitor Willie Nelson, who are good friends play a lot of poker. The poker games usually will include along with Willie, Owen Wilson, and Woody Harrelson. This Don Nelson scene ain't exactly the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, but more Willie, Waylon & the Boys (Owen I guess instead of the late Waylon). At least we didn't see a pic of retired NFL player/GM Ozzie Newsome!

Yes and no. WE escaped the fake mass conformity people used to showcase in public, with sketchy results behind closed walls for many. Now people aspire to authentic, high quality, true pair-bonding relationships (those who are capable of that). Others will be like Ozzie Osborne but that's OK, bc that's who they are. Many people are promiscuous light-weights and while not everyone can achieve a fulfilling, long-lasting and authentic union , it is something worth aspiring to. This is a better than the fakery of mass-conformity marriages of the 1950's. For lord's sake, those spouses talked to each other like polite, contained strangers. People sacrificed the authenticity of their self for face value marital functioning that could be showcased in public as "forever intact." I'll pass.

I am 71 years old. I remember the TV show, but I was just a little too young to appreciate it fully. Same with Ricky Nelson's 1950/60s record popularity; however, one of my all time favorite songs, which came out when I was in my early twenties and was thus more impressionable and capable of understanding a song about real adult concerns, was "Garden Party." I still use the one line for many occasions: "You know you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself." I will readily admit, though, in retrospect, that "Teenage Idol" was about really important issues, such as the reality of fame. Really felt bad when Ricky died in that plane crash. Pat, in Chicago

Ozzie and Harriet, Leave it to Beaver, The Donna Reed Show, My Three Sons, December Bride, The Gale Storm Show. The Real McCoys, Batchelor Father, and so many, many more like Bonanza, Gumsmoke, Cheyenne, Wanted Dead, or Alive. The Rifleman. Okay, okay, I'll stop after I mention The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Beverly Hillbillies and Wagon Train. Amos and Andy, Paladin. Death Valkey Days, Alfred Hitchcock, Twilight Zone Outer Limits, FatherbKnows Best. Walt Disney. The Mousekiteers, I'm sorry, but there were so damn good shows back then. Not to mention the variety shows. I need to go to work now. Otherwise, I'd mention them too.

Ozzie was an amazingly talented, Brilliant person. He was a producer, writer, athlete, musician, musical arranger, businessperson, lawyer, & singer. He was also proficient on several musical instruments. He had his entire family perform on his tv show, but that was from a different social time. At the time, it was normal to perform as a show business family. Now, it would be considered abusive.

There have always been fakes in the industry, but most of the key figures were professionals who paid their dues. The today is all phony based on nepotism, not talent. That's one of the reasons why you see the junk parading as entertainment now, and why the industry has so many problems with original ideas. In David Halberstam’s book The Fifties, Ozzie is depicted as a petty jealous creep who was trying to undermine Ricky when he was achieving such success. I tend to believe that based on other sources I have read. Plus the idea that Ozzie was this intimate husband and father is nonsense. He was none of those things
@marymitchell8625
@marymitchell8625 8 ай бұрын
Reportedly, Ozzie was a pretty tough taskmaster and very strict as a dad. Other sources claim he had a longtime mistress, and that Harriet was ... kind of a tough, chain smoking lady who liked her whiskey and cigarettes each night. Ricky allegedly went into Harlem as a very young teen to lose his virginity. Daughter Tracy was actually interviewed and said Ricky and her mother were already sleeping together early in the relationship and that she was out of wedlock. To fool the press, they pretended she was premature and even showed her in an incubator. After a while, Ricky was touring so much that when he was killed, they decided not to tell Harriet, leading her to believe he was just away touring. I think other documentaries about the family do a better job with this subject, including more details about the ugly Nelsoh-Harmon custody battles and Tracy's mother allegedly draining Ricky's bank accounts. David Nelson allegedly never forgave her for cleaning his brother out, which resulted in his constantly having to tour and use substandard equipment (like the plane that killed him). He reportefly confronted her publicly at the funeral, accusing her of murder. I'm surprised none if this info is here.

The AI ChatBot needs to be reprogrammed to say "Brunswick" rather than "Burlington" as one of the record labels Ozzie Nelson recorded for. As for Ozzie's saxophone prowess, son David said in an interview that his Dad was amazed at his musical career because he could not read music, could barely play the saxophone, and knew only basic chords on a banjo-ukulele. All that aside, he was universally regarded as a genuinely nice guy and a total professional by all who knew and worked with him in radio and television.

I was a child when Ricky died, but remember that night vividly as I had heard enough of his music from seeing him on music shows from the time such as "Solid Gold" that I became a tiny fan. I'd also heard his earlier hits when my Mom would tune into the "classics" station. From that I was in love with "Garden Party" & "Hello Mary Lou," but honestly would watch anytime I saw he was appearing on anything. We didn't have access back then to Disney or any channels that ran "Ozzie & Harriet," but or I definitely would have watched those too (I'm trying to now though). His twin sons Matthew & Gunnar became famous in the 90's as the rock band "Nelson." They definitely inherited the musical talent. Loved their music too & being a twin myself they immediately caught my attention...though at first I didn't realize who their dad was. I've kept up with their music even now & they apparently are really, really nice guys. I'm a huge music fan & thought I knew quite a bit & study quite a bit too but yes, always learning everyday.

First, it's not Red Skeleton! It's Red Skelton. That's just embarrassing. Second, you talked about Dave's career later in life, but did not mention that Ricky died in a plane crash in 1985. I kinda think that's important...

Ozzie - Born in New Jersey, received his law degree from near-by Newark? Newark is a major city in the state of New Jersey - not near-by. It is near-by New York City.

Red’s last name is not pronounced “Skeleton” it IS however spoken “SKELTON”, and he was from Vincennes, Indiana, which, within 20 miles south of there, is the region’s most tasty, delectable, cantaloupes found anywhere, in the world, … the region, between Vincennes, & Evansville, Indiana, …
