Appreciate the video for this job! Helped me out a bunch! Couple of tips that helped me and could make someone else's job easier: the bracket that connects the master cylinder and clutch pedal has a habit of getting caught against the firewall making it awful to pull out. Having someone on the inside push the bracket through can make your life easier. The other thing is pulling the brake line so it feeds into the space between the firewall and the engine so it's not running into much made a huge difference for me. It took me all of 30 seconds to pull it out once I got it loose from the firewall by doing that. Didn't have to disconnect the airbox or anything. Hope these tips help someone out!

Thanks for the good video. I had to replace this entire line several years back as it broke just as I got back from Virginia to Illinois and the OEM was an all plastic and rubber hose system which I painstakingly had to discover after an arduous search because the service notices didn't clearly post this OEM change-over to the new cast slave and hard line parts. In any case, I did this when I was 60 and I'm now 66 and not looking forward to doing the repair again, as I'm older and not a mechanic by any trade. Been an office pencil pusher my entire life. But I changed the slave and the pedal kept sticking, so I've come to the conclusion it can only be the master. Glad you had this video because I've forgotten most of the master part under the dash and this was a good reminder for me. I'm betting..........just betting, that mine too will show a sheared bolt as well. In any case, thank you. I said I would never, EVER again, replace a heater core, ignition or this system in ANY car EVER again, but a fixed, retired income dictates that I tackle it. AGAIN. dammit..........lol..........thanks dude.

I hear ya Fox. Your retired so you can take your time, get the job done and $ave a bunch of cash. Since posting this video I have learned from several viewers that the bolt head is liable to shear off. I can actually do the entire job in about 30 minutes but that's from experience, practice and having the right tools If you have no pedal pressure be sure to check for trapped air in the system. If it's not fully bled there will be very little clutch pedal resistance. A good flashlight and some reading glasses and you should be able to see if one of those bolt heads are broken before taking the unit out. Good luck and thanks for your comment! - Ozz

I’m having the same issue with my 07 accord five speed, will not go in gear for anything when running. I already understand all the aspects of the way the clutch works but I was impressed with how well you explained it for someone who might not know. The real problem I’m having is that I have replaced both the master and the slave cylinder and it worked fine for awhile (months) and then got to where you had to rev match to shift and it won’t go in gear. I have completely bled the system very thoroughly 2 times since it started not going in gear. I pumped the clutch pedal approximately 100 times in each session and unbolted the slave and cycled it through its full range of motion and get no bubbles out and there are no leaks and the fluid stays full and the clutch pedal is adjusted to spec. I bleed the system by attaching a small silicone hose to the bleeder and run the hose back up to the reservoir, I have flushed the fluid out a couple times in the last year due to ongoing problems previous to the most recent replacement of the master cylinder. I have actually replaced it 3 times so I know the pain involved. I’m nearing my wits end on this. The previous master cylinders (3) all went bad and leaked fluid at the clutch pedal area. I think the firewall may have been tweaked in an accident and I had to shim the master to make the piston not bind up which is what ruined the others. So after fighting it for sooo looong I’m not sure what to even do. The clutch fork moves about 1/2” maybe less and does not leak down that I can tell. I even today fabricated a new slightly longer (1/4 - 3/8”) piston to activate the clutch fork and it tried to go into gear but still would not. I even did the bleeding on a steep incline so the front of car was higher cause someone thought that might help but no such luck. My system for bleeding does work because I have done it many times with success. What would you suggest?
@ozzstars_cars

Vacuum bleed the system. Inspect the clutch disc, usually when they wear down it begins to get hard to shift into gear.

This video helped me quite a bit. My master looked the same as yours, one bolt sheered off. After changing it out and getting it working again, I took the old one apart like you did, but mine looked fine inside, not cracked like yours. I guess it was enough to lose pressure so it wasn’t disengaging the clutch. Anyway, thanks.

Thanks for a great video. Without it, I don't believe I could have accomplished the task. My 2006 Accord 3.0 V6 was identical in the firewall area and I didn't think I would ever be able to get that cylinder out of there. After it was out, I said to myself, now how will I ever get a new one back in there? I did though. My slave unit is different from your video, so Honda made a change there. It is in the same location though. I had to ordered it online. Couple of notes. When assembling the hydraulic line to the new cylinder, It seems important to keep the orientation lined up from the old one. Otherwise, you would have to loosen and tighten the hydraulic line after it was installed. I'm not sure I could have gotten two wrenches and my hands down in there, so I opted for your procedures. I also noted that the use of a 6 wall socket is probably a good idea, especially on the slave unit. Stripping a bolt head with a 12 wall socket would likely create a whole new problem since there is no room to work down there. I also used a liberal amount of liquid wrench prior to unbolting the slave bolts. Even then It was tough and I was a little worried that one of them might not break loose without shearing the bolt. I even used a couple of short licks with an impact hammer. Whether that helped, I don't know, but at least both broke loose. I virtually duplicated your work and am grateful for your video. Oh, one more thing. This is a young man's work, not old like me, so I'm also thankful for Aleve. I'm not sure where this procedure lands on a 1-10 scale for difficulty, but for an amateur like myself, it was a 10 in the master cylinder area. Thanks again for your time and willingness to share.

Within the last few days I have had to put the trans in gear and depress the clutch pedal to to floor before starting the car. I noticed that when i do that in my garage (level floor) the car begins to move forward even with the clutch fully pressed to the floor. If replacing the master and slave cylinders don't fix the problem my next step with be rebuilding the synchronization plates (install a rebuilt transmission). Keeping my fingers crossed in the mean time. Thank you for your excellent presentation and instructions.

try adjusting the master/ clutch pedal. spin it one full time around and test it (clockwise is to make it engage further to the floor and counter clockwise[left] is to make it engage higher, so I would say spin it counterclockwise one time and test it.

You're right about the moisture in the fluid but what happened is, water doesn't compress so it cracked the piston and broke the bolt bc something had to give. That also means that you didn't need to extend your pushrod more than likely because clearly it was already disengaging the clutch as far as it would go or the piston wouldn't have cracked

I took the wheel off just for a little extra room to work with, putting the new master in was super easy for me the hardest part of the job was getting to the slave cylinder to bleed it because there is no room to work. I ended up taking off that coolant line witch freed up a lot of space and removing the slave cylinder so I could crack the line without trouble. then I just bled it from the line because you cant really get a wrench in there to use the bleeder.

The broken pressure plate was caused by the broken bolt. With one side lifted up the O ring squeezed out and the pressure plate was pressed up against an uneven surface. It is hardened steel so it can not bend and that broke it.

@ozzstars_cars
@ozzstars_cars 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks David. The clutch fluid is brake fluid so yes it should be changed every few year but more than often it isn't. The reason to replace the fluid is because it is hygroscopic, meaning the fluid absorbs moisture and becomes less efficient and can also cause rust and corrosion internally. Thanks for watching and commenting!

The shop he took it to went through a couple SC's before they sent it to the Honda shop. Everyone is stumped. Other than a series of bad parts (at this point statistically not likely), where/what in the chain could be causing these failures. Besides his car has been set aside for months as the shop make money on brake jobs. Help!

Why didn't you just pull the pressure fit pin and disconnecting the hydraulic line instead of removing the whole master cylinder and initial hydraulic line? I replaced my 2002 Honda Accord clutch master and slave and that's how my friend and I removed the master by "pulling the pin" then the whole master came out. Great video for my newer 2011 that needs a bleed out maintenance done on it.

Not sure about sabotage, more likely poor design and/or fastener selection. When replacing my clutch master, I opted to replace the 3 bolts with grade 10.9 flange bolts through bolted to a nylon lock nut. Hopefully that is the weak link in the chain.

After trying to change my master cylinder on my 2001 honda accord i lost the pin that holds the break lines to the master Cylinder ,so i brought it to canadian tire and they cheaped out by using a 39 cent cotter pin . if you are familiar with the accord u know exactly what im talking about . the pin holds the brake lines in ;no bolts and if it sheers off game over no brakes. the factory pin is precision fit with special metal alloy designed for that . not a cotter pin or whatever they call it.

watched the whole vid! great video man. my 2011 honda fit sport clutch has been feeling a wee bit vibrated or almost a bit sticky when it engages throughout all the gears. You think it might be a master/slave cylinder issue? not really sure.

+HingleMcCringleBerry anything is possible. If it is a high mileage vehicle I would bleed all the old fluid out and put new fluid in. See if that smooths things out for you. As long as both the master clutch cylinder and slave cylinder are not leaking and 'functioning okay. If the new fluid doesnt cure the issue then its time to diagnose further. Start off simple, easy and inexpensive. Take care and good luck

perfect video. I struggled hard with the high pressure line removal. I only did the master cylinder and now I'm slowly leaking clutch fluid. I go through a whole reservoir in about 2,000 miles. my issue is that I can't find the leak. is it likely slowly dripping from the boot and not collecting? I'm going to replace the slave and see if that helps.
@ozzstars_cars

It's not leaking back inside the car on the floorboard is it? That seal can go bad. After replacing that much fluid you should see the leak.
@tannervice7753

Ozzstar nope. It's not leaking inside at all. it either has to be leaking from the line I messed with or from the slave at the boot and it's just not hitting anything on its way down. I can't find any wetness

Not unfortunate because you wouldn't be able to see a thing.Install is reverse of removal. The clutch master on this car is way back in there deep on the firewall, no way to film it. Watch the video again, i show the U clip that is removed which holds the hard line fitting in place. Thanks for watching

ozzstar Got it. I'm replacing mine now. Pressed out the U-clip with a large pair of pliers and the line popped right off. Fortunately, I was able to get the MC out of the car without taking off the air hose. I had to snake it across the firewall toward the passenger side. Still was a bitch though.

I'm doing the bleeding through the slave master cylinder that sits at the front of motor?? Is that the correct way to doit?? Or do you bleed the Master and Slave cylinder individually?? +El Matador Tapia the proper way to bleed the CLUTCH master cylinder is through the slave cylinder. Best to use a vacuum pump to bleed the air out. It can be done manually by pumping the clutch pedal but it is tricky and difficult and takes a lot more time. Hope that helps you out.

It's a little bit tight but can be done fairly easy. If wide open space is easy and impossible clearance mean no access, I'd put it in between. Wiggle and twist and its done. I haven't seen an RSX setup so I have no comparison.

kind of a late comment, but need some help. The same thing happened to my '03 accord, I replaced the master cylinder, hooked up everything well, but for some reason the master is not pumping the fluid through to the slave. I filled up the reservoir and it does not get sucked into the system. It just sits there. I crakc open the bleeder while having someone depress the clutch, and no fluid comes out. Just sits in the reservoir. Any help is appreciated. Tried a vacuum pump and nothing.

It is very difficult to bleed the clutch master just by pumping the pedal. It will take a lot of time. Best bet is to vacuum bleed with a pump. Takes only about a minute that way.
