dude your tips are pretty awesome on how to play those fast runs at the end. I worked and worked and finally figured out the starting on the upstroke and wow it came very naturally to play. and the starting at a slower tempo and then working it up to speed is the only way to learn this. Thanks a lot for posting this.

My gosh, I have spent so many hours on this its shameful to say! I had learned a couple versions of the last three sections of the solo, the last one being the long one that leads into the ascending/descending run and I finally stumble across this. I have seen your post before and knew your work is almost to good to be true. The last section and how you set it up with the downstroke on the 1st note makes it obvious why I have struggled so. Immediately i could tell my alternate picking was cluttered and seemed like a struggle. And after trying this a few times it's quite obvious why it was. Now I can make sense as to why I have struggled and can hopefully nail this. Thank you PDXGF!! Very acurate and easily understood why I hacked it up. U Rock!!!

Thanks for your lessons! I love Carl Brown's lessons (Guitar365) but after a point it just became way too slow and drawn out for me once I reached a certain point in my playing. Tabs on the other hand can get intimidating because of how long they seem and half the time you don't even know if it's really that accurate. Your tabs sound just like the recording, and seeing one phrase of it at a time, combined with hearing what that should sound like (played slower) makes it so much easier and quicker to learn solos. Thanks a ton!

@PDXguitarfreak6 жыл бұрын
It shares a lot of the same specs as my J.Custom, including same pickups (minus the middle pickup obviously), Super Wizard neck with same dimensions and fret edge treatment. However, there's some important differences too - the JC has stainless steel frets, neck is titanium reinforced, different body wood (JC is mahogany with maple top/back, while this one is Ash), and the bridge is different too (Low Pro Edge in the JC versus the regular Edge in this one). They are both very comfortable guitars to play, but the JC is truly a step up in material and feel, and to me that says a lot because I really like the Prestige too.

@PDXguitarfreak6 жыл бұрын
Hi Victor and thanks! I'm not using a live amp for this recording. I'm going through my POD HD500 processor directly into my PC (I have most of my patches for the POD uploaded onto the Line6 Custom Tone website). For amps, I have an EVH 5150iii 2x12 50w combo. My amp settings probably won't help you much since our amps are very different. However, I can tell you. For dirty rhythm guitar (channel 2), I keep the gain around 4, bass 5 to 6, mids 3 to 4, treble 6 to 7. For the lead guitar (channel 3), gain is 2 to 5, bass 3, mids 6 to 10, treble 6 to 7. Presence at 5 to 6. You can see I vary things up quite a bit, and that's often dictated by the song and/or guitar.
@victorgracia47546 жыл бұрын
PDX Guitar Freak tnx bro, I use to have the PODHD500X but I never achieve a tone like that, I guess I should spend more time experimenting with every cab, mic, etc. Tnx for the setting on the EVH anyways, keep up with the good work bro!!!

I noticed you alternate pick the ascending runs in the demonstration, but it looks like you use a more legato style in the actual performance. Is that accurate? I've spent way too many years trying and giving up on this lick and need all the tips and tricks lolololol
@PDXguitarfreak5 жыл бұрын
Hi Pat, if you are referring to the ascending runs that start out on from the low E string and work their way up (right before the final fast run), I think I may have gone a bit more legato during the performance at the beginning. It's been a while since I recorded this, but when I watch my right hand it appears I didn't pick every single note which implies I did some hammer-on/pull-offs. Good ear/eye you have there :)

Nice video! I ask all youtube teachers - just look this one and do this way - don't talk about strings & fret numbers, just give a tab and focus on a performance nuances & licks.
@PDXguitarfreak5 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you! I agree with you too, and I prefer to learn this way. When I see people that teach by saying "now you play the 7th fret on the b string... and then you play the 8th string... and then you play the 10th string..." I hate that. It is easier for the teacher, but it is lazy for them. I prefer to take the time to make the tabs, so it is quicker for the player. :)

Most of this solo is hard but "do-able". The last lick is literally chaos. Who the hell can alternative pick that fast. Any tips? I hear what you're saying in the video, but I've found I cannot increase speed with my metronome beyond a certain point. It's hard to stay in time after 80 BPM of the 16th triplets.

He doesn’t actually play all of the notes listed in the tab. Neither does this guy...slow it down to half speed or quarter speed on the video. Not all of the notes get it.

The outro solo is the one Jake still to this day has a little bit of a problem to how he played it with Ozzy from 1983-1987. There's a video on here and he explains exactly how That's played. It's not easy That's for sure. Jake had to make it a headache for a reason. The solos on the Ultimate Sin are great. Like Never and Fool like you.
