I once had been released from a hospital in downtown while hallucinating (from an anti-emetic) and made it to the subway. I was really confused and kept asking this guy if he was going where I was. He said no but ended up going on the same train to make sure I got there. I don't know who he was, but it was the kindest thing that he could have done. I wish I could thank him directly. I was met by people I knew and made it home ok. But I'm not sure I'd have made it if he hadn't made sure I got there safe. He never sat next to me or even tried to talk to me, and didn't get off the train when I did. But he rode along to make sure I got there. Some people are truly kind.

If you see someone in your home that shouldn't be there I wouldn't suggest being polite at first. I would suggest a weapon and getting them out. 99.9% of the time if someone is in your home they aren't there to be friendly. Outside of the home absolutely, be kind.

One problem with people is that they sometimes confuse politeness with weakness. It's the opposite, actually. You're taking control of the situation and treating another person with respect, and expecting the same in return. Now if they respond in a way that shows me that they're not worthy of my respect I'll respond accordingly...

I grew up in a pretty rough neighborhood. If the cops showed up for something it was always super confrontational. They never talked or listened. It was just an automatic response to treat everyone as a threat and if you even tried to explain a situation you usually found yourself either with a gun in your face, maced, in handcuffs or all three. Then a new cop joined the local PD. They thought it would be funny to send him to our neighborhood to patrol, kind of like a hazing. This guy though knew what was up. He would get out of his car, sit down with all of us hooligan kids and hang out. He never treated any of us like future convicts but took the time to talk and get to know everyone. And surprise, surprise. He never had any problems in the neighborhood. If there was a dispute or a disturbance he would roll up, address people by name and just talk. 99% of the time there wouldn't be any problems and the issue would be resolved because he treated everyone like they were human beings. World needs more cops like that.

My mate woke up in my sister's bed wearing a pink cow nightie (sister was away and friend had spilled wine on their clothes, hence the nightie), they woke up in a pink room surrounded by unicorns, and was convinced they'd broken into the neighbour's house. My mum was half asleep and went to pee with the door open (it was before 5am), as my friend comes army crawling across the landing in this stupid nightie, mum half asleep says "wtf are you doing?" and my friend just screams "OH THANK GOD! The only thing heartbreaking was that an old man was working a register and had to deal with a robber. And the robber was well-dressed, calm and changed his story when the owner offered him some money to buy food. Had he been desperate to feed kids he would have held up the mini-mart for grilled hot dogs and a liter of soda.

Lemme share a story: Having a beer with my friends, when a guy approaches our table and says: "Who would like to have a fistfight outside, I'm jacked on steroids and I just want to fight". To my amazement, one of my friends diffused the situation with paying a round of drinks and some banter, and then said the most epic line ever: "Now that you realized you were an asshole, you should pay for a round" ..and so he did. Moral of the story, good banter goes a long way!

Sometimes I felt strength and powerful when I was angry and lashed out. But this isnt the days or hunter and survival or fighting for a mate. I know those urges to be violent come from a place I can control. To see kindess when anger is an option gives me hope for the species. Agreed! Politeness with firm grip of reasoning is basically the best way to handle any situation with another human being. Personally I have prevented 2 street robberies against my by being polite and reasonable as I'm in a wheelchair and easy target. Both times target has been my car, I've given the keys but pointed up for the guys that "there's security camera by the way..." and fooled one by saying that my car has tracker in case for stealing, which it doesn't include. Before I paralyzed at the age of 13, I was fuck knuckle of a little cunt who has great physique due sports since 4yo and pretty much claimed the dominance within my school mates by searching the biggest bully and getting to fight him asap with reason and either beat him or if I too beating then just scaring the shit out of the bully by laughing like maniac while spitting blood towards him when were intervened. Always defending the weak though, never being bully. Then I had to change tactics and found politeness and reason as the best resolution. Got even awarded for that :D

Politeness shows the person has complete huge control of basic impulses. Also it totally gets by surprise people who expect a rude, agressive behaviour. The calm the polite person shows ends up responded by the other person/people. There's no threat from the speaker so the listener(s) don't feel any need to be violent. It takes a lot of cold blood to act so cool, calm and colected.
