I once had been released from a hospital in downtown while hallucinating (from an anti-emetic) and made it to the subway. I was really confused and kept asking this guy if he was going where I was. He said no but ended up going on the same train to make sure I got there. I don't know who he was, but it was the kindest thing that he could have done. I wish I could thank him directly. I was met by people I knew and made it home ok. But I'm not sure I'd have made it if he hadn't made sure I got there safe. He never sat next to me or even tried to talk to me, and didn't get off the train when I did. But he rode along to make sure I got there. Some people are truly kind.

One problem with people is that they sometimes confuse politeness with weakness. It's the opposite, actually. The only thing heartbreaking was that an old man was working a register and had to deal with a robber. And the robber was well-dressed, calm and changed his story when the owner offered him some money to buy food. Had he been desperate to feed kids he would have held up the mini-mart for grilled hot dogs and a liter of soda.

Politeness shows the person has complete huge control of basic impulses. Also it totally gets by surprise people who expect a rude, agressive behaviour. The calm the polite person shows ends up responded by the other person/people. There's no threat from the speaker so the listener(s) don't feel any need to be violent. It takes a lot of cold blood to act so cool, calm and colected.

When I lived at the beach in the 90s we didn't lock doors, I mean nobody did. Needless to say waking up in or to the wrong house or people that you didn't know was commonplace. It led to many a odd morning but was so understood that it came with complimentary coffee and occasional breakfast. More than one friend was made. Unless you were from across the ditch then it was a more violent response.

'walked into the wrong house'...I've done that. Drinking session at a friend of a friend's place in a block of flats. I staggered out for a piss in the garden, turned round to go back in, went in the wrong door. Punched in the face after the resident's polite refusals to let me in ran out. Staggered off, collapsed in a gutter somewhere. I got found a couple of hours later by a flatmate. broke me nose too.
