P-38 Lightning by Hobby Boss [1:72]

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird... It's a plane... Wait... It actually is a plane... and it isn't in the sky...
So I've had this cheapo kit sitting around for who knows how long. Finally got around to building it (a while ago on stream) and now it's here in this video...
I think it's pretty decent for the low price I paid for it.

Looks nice, not bad at all for that price. Just as a rule of thumb, models of aircraft with tricycle landing gear are going to need weight in the nose to make them sit right.

Refraining from making a comment about the COCKpit? That must have been HARD. The Hobby Boss kits that are labeled "Easy Assembly" are like this with mostly one or two piece fuselage and wing constructions. Other Hobby Boss kits are more conventionally laid out. The "Easy Assembly" kits are all pretty low price too.

Built a version of this about fortyish years ago (probably Revell or Airfix), I also didn't weigh the nose due to completely missing the 'weight this bit' picture and arrow in the instructions. It was still a good model though.

Fun fact: the P-38 doesn't have a fuselage. It has twin booms and a cockpit nacelle. The more you know!

Working on one right now. Great kit for any skill level, especially a beginner. Only major downside is those instructions, way too simplified in my opinion.

Nice kit of a very interesting plane. German soldiers nicknamed it "Gabelschwanzteufel". (Literally: Fork tail devil). It looks good for that price and in general. If one wants a super detailed model one has to spend a lot of money more I think. Very often a matter of expectations... ah... expectations...

Again and again this nonsense of the 'Gabelschwanzteufel'. Give me just one GERMAN source where this name is used in context with the P-38. In fact some German pilots called it ironically "Bel ami", after a German movie of 1939. An authentic German nickname for the P-47 Thunderbolt was the similar-sounding "Trunkenbold" (drunkard).

It comes with stickers that aren't stickers. They don't peel off. There's no film to peel off. I have no idea how to apply them, short of exacto blading them off and gluing them onto the plane, with backing paper and all. Very disappointing.👎

They're not stickers. They're decals. You soak them in water and slide them off the backing paper onto the model.
