The high altitude problems of the P-38 were confined to the earlier G & H models. Re-positioned radiators etc. solved that issue. The Allison’s weren’t inline engines, they were V-12s.

Man, I just love this plane. My first foray away from 109s and 190s. I set the convergence to 460m (1500ft,) which is what it was historically as far as bullet drop off. It's so lethal, flies so smooth, and goes so fast. I didn't even know it had a dive break!

The first fighter group had a very good record for high altitude escort missions flying into Europe from the south. A lot of the 38's bad rep in nw Europe was due to wartime fuel supply agreements. The rad supplied fuel in England which was lower octane than the engines were designed for.

A really good airplane. Sadly more work to keep up on which made extra work on the ground crews to keep these birds in the air. A big reason for their lack of support. And she was a bit TOO fast for her own good, and had some teething issues. They all got worked out but it was a bit too late by that time and some very powerful single engine planes started to really shine.

How does it fly so well with 1 engine and how does the dive break work?
@Wolfpack3455 жыл бұрын
Each engine is so powerful it only needs one to stay in the air. The dive brakes just mantain airspeed. So you don't go too fast and can't pull out of a dive. The Stuka for example has dive breaks.
@glorbusborbus4805 жыл бұрын
it's all fun and games trying to land a busted one until you drop below the minimum airspeed too high up, and she flips on her back. Greatest fear of P38 pilots was losing an engine right after takeoff, the game models it perfectly.

@ericandi3 жыл бұрын
This video really makes me question the accuracy of the flight model for the P38. When you lose an engine in a twin engine prop plane, it definitely doesn't fly as normally as what I saw in this video. Having unbalanced propulsion only on one side, causes twins to yaw to one side and you have to add a lot of rudder and twin to baby it back to landing after losing an engine.

P-38, mighty, mighty fine plane. If you are going to escort B-17s over Germany, at 25,000 feet, make sure you dress warm. There is no big radial engine right in front of you putting off a lot of heat.

Your the only one who did prefer Allison's engines on Wwii fighters.. Allison made the p-40s engines, and also the first engine mounted on the 1942 P-51 yes there was a Mustang in 42, but it was remarkably unremarkable. And a complete lump of coal at altitude... It probably put the Allison's in yeast just to make use of all the Allison engines no other plane wanted... P-51 eventually got a Rolls-Royce engine, becoming the p-51c then d.. but my favorite American engine.... The Pratt,. How could you not like 16 cylinders turbo supercharged 2000 horsepower with WEP, could take 40 to 60 lb of boost.. and all Air Cooled ! The Allison's best was somewhere around 1,000 horsepower. Still beats the engine mounted on every A6m, to 900 horsepower.. sake something.. the lightning is definitely a cool plane though.. probably has a range of over a thousand miles with drop tanks.. just want to get caught in the dog fight with anything.. for killing bombers or transports it's great. So when you got a dedicated single engine fighter if you're out in class in every way..
@teetar17513 жыл бұрын
Thinking about getting this game but it's too damn expensive, especially compared to my 1946 setup, which has like 300 planes.. mostly MOD planes from IL 2 SAS, FIND A DIFFICULT SPENDING $50 FOR. One map, and a set of planes which I have no choice over. I know IL too is russian develop, but I would trade 90% of those Russian birds for anything else.. they're just very unremarkable to me, and that's mostly what you're getting.. I guess they figured they're going to make some money off this go around despite the limited audience of simulation games... 1946 definitely looks aged here
@Wolfpack3453 жыл бұрын
People commonly discuss price but forget that all of the older IL-2 Modules were priced similarly. IL-2 , Forgotten Battles, Pacific Fighters and then they repackaged it all and sold it again with 1946. As for the amount of planes you get. It is really a case of quality vs quantity. I have tried to go back to 1946 after playing Great Battles and DCS. It is pretty hard to do for me personally. As for the price. It is currently on sale. BOS only costing $7. You can skip all the Eastern Front stuff and go straight to Bodenplatte which is $17 right now. You can get any expansion in any order via the website. forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/70825-annual-spring-sale-has-begun-april-9th-23rd-webstore-and-steam-40-85-off/

Although the P-51 was the best and probably the first true WW2 fighter, the P-47 and P-38 held their own. The top scoring Aces for the US were P-38, P-47, F4F and F6F's. I believe Preddy flew P-47's and P-51's. Many aces had the chance and did go back to the P-47. The top scoring Aces fought against the best of the German and Japanese Aces, by P-51B/D time, the Axis had lost many of its Aces. B-17's and B-24's hated being escorted by P-51's because the pilots would chase enemies down, which at that time, is what escorts were told to do. The Heavies routes were designed specifically to draw up fighters. Again not ripping the P-51 but the P-47 and P-38 deserve more credit.
