I was pretty young but I was helping an older nieghbor with a few thinks around his house..... Out of no where he said, "I can't believe it I swear I can hear a mustang flying around, but it can't be." A short time later, I heard it to and it flew over us going to an airshow. This was like in the early 80s maybe late 70s. I never seen the old man smile so big seeing it fly over, and knowing he was right. He never did talk about his war experience, but that sound must have meant something to him.

My grandfather was a parachuter in the German military in WWII and in northern France in 1944. When I was a kid, he took me to an air show where also a P-51 was present. You could hear the engine roar even before you could see tha aircraft and he told me: When you heard that sound, you had to take cover. Still one of my best childhood memories and love that plane :) Thanks for the video!

Sir, do you know which Regiment or Division your Grandfather was in ? My Uncle was in FJR2, dropped on Crete, later in Leningrad, then became part of newly formed FJD4 alongside Folgore Paratroops ? Fought at Monte Cassino then did a 150mile Escape and Evasion before he was captured. He told me similar tales about the "Jabos" on the Eastern Front, and how terrified he was when B17s, then B25s bombed the Abbey. He was the kindest and warmest of all my relatives, always full of fun.

Great vid and the sound with headphones is powerful. Whenever I see a P-51 Mustang I think of the famous story about Herman Goering, head of the German Luftwaffe in World War 2. In 1944, Goering was in Berlin and when he looked up and saw Mustangs flying overhead and said "The war is lost." The P-51 adding the long range to reach Berlin and escort bombers there and back meant it was over.

A few years ago we got a visit from 'Vera' - the airworthy Lancaster based in Canada. She landed at Scampton and teamed up with RAF's airworthy Lancaster to tour the country. 8 Merlins on two aircraft. They performed a display over an old Lancaster base at East Kirkby - home of 'Just Jane' - another Lancaster (in taxyable condition - and being restored to flight eventually). She had her engines running as the other two flew over in formation. 12 Merlins sang their symphony together in a few hundred yards. Something I will never forget. There's also been a formation flypast at Duxford of 14 Spitfires - mostly Merlins and a few Griffons - which broke into a tailchase. Glorious .

At some US airshows you can see 10-20 at a time. Very common for 2+ to show up at many airshows. One airshow had i think 15 F4U corsairs flying. I've seen up to 6 P-40s at once. One year at oshkosh there were 2 B-29s, 2 or 3 B-17s, 1 B-24, an A-20, and a bunch of B-25s and A-26s. Ive seen 2 F8Fs at Oshkosh as well. and many more. P-38, Yak, SBD, TBM, F4F, F6F, P-39, P-63, Multiple A-1D, F7F, Spitfires, etc.
