Pretty sure the noise is from the inner gun ports on the P51. The two outer gun muzzles on each wing protruded a little from their ports, but the inner guns were set back a few inches, leaving a space inside the port that whistled in the slipstream. There is a P51 flying in New Zealand with the ports blanked off by dummy muzzles and we hear no whistling when that aircraft is performing.

The Spitfire was the ultimate western allies' wartime manifestation of an air intercept fighter that could slip through the enemy's escort screen and knock his bombers out of the sky ... while the Mustang was the ultimate western allies' wartime manifestation of a long range escort fighter than could accompany long range bombers throughout their journey and hold off the enemy's intercept fighters. The enemy fighters that they both most had to contend with, whether on intercept or escort duty, were the same - variations of the Bf-109 and Fw-190. The Mustang out-ranged the Spitfire, making it the better escort fighter (able to accompany a B-17 formation throughout its journey), but the Mustang could not hold a turn with a Spitfire, making the Spitfire the superior interceptor (enemy fighters having a harder time holding a turn with the Spitfire, making the Spitfire more able to slip through their escort screen and strike at the bombers directly). This also explains why, in this choreographed display, the Spitfire follows the Mustang (the Mustang cannot accidentally enter a turn that the Spitfire cannot hold formation in).

It's hilarious how some things haven't changed. They're basically the same engine design, yet the one built by the British sounds so smooth and refined, and the one built by The Americans sound so angry and shouty. Lol love them both. Love the character that everything seems to have had back then.

deejayimm The Mustangs PACKARD merlin was modified, had an entire different 2 stage 2 speed supercharger, carburator and inter cooler, it also swung a larger wider bladed prop, and the Merlin versions used in the Mustang were NOT used in any other plane !!! Yes they were a different version !!! Similar, is not the same !! !

We were not required to use the best plane in the theatre to escort your Bombers and with the XII and XVI Vickers now had a G/A plane that could take over what the RAF Mustang was doing. The Mustang had seen hard service since 42 2. All my points are correct The P51D was beaten by the Spitfire in most Flying Characteristics 3. You Americans always believed bigger was better Well the Spitfire showed you how wrong you were

The Mustang at high altitude performed better and at lower altitudes the Spitfire was better. Their roles were different too, the Spitfire was an interceptor while the Mustang was a long range bomber escort fighter.

the f6f hellcat might disagree with you. its kill ratio was nuts - granted it fought mostly against Zeros with little to no armor. It'd be interesting to see how it would've compared over time if it fought more BF109s

Put both in the climb, then put the pedal to the metal , go to 20000 ft and see who gets there first

The P 51 B had slightly better climb than the P 51 D and the P 51 B that took 5.9 minutes to 20,000 feet, the Spitfire Mk IX in 1942 took 5 .6 minutes but by 1943 the Mk IX only took 4.75 minutes, from 20,000 feet the Spitfire really pulled away.
