I was on the Isle of Wight just before the D day remembrance some years back and there was a staging field there for the fighters and light bombers. Watching them practice my Brit friends mentioned the Mustang sounded more intimidating that the Spitfire. I think it was the center line oil cooler scoop on the -51 versus the under wing scoops of the Spit. That’s also why the -51 has more time on the ground after start than the Spitfire. Not enough airflow over the coolers on the Spitfire’s wing at idle on the ground. Same engine but distinctly different sounds at speed.

sweet bird! lovin that "whistle" too! we need to sign a petition to make every other mustang "whistle" too! ive seen films of some that dont whistle due to having the machinegun ports plugged up?
@Warbirds3 ай бұрын
You’re right on that whistles. I talked to the owner of the P-51 Lousiana Kid. It’s gunports are closed as he prefers the engine roar over the gunport whistle

It is amazing to see these warbirds looking like they just rolled out of the factory. We see them today as beautiful, and amazing machines, and it is easy to forget what they were made for. Most of the pilots were in their early 20's who had to grow up in a hurry to do their jobs and survive. My family was on the receiving end of these machines, and I thank God that the allies won. My parents would have never met, but for the war. My mother, her sister, and her mother fled from Schlesien to Bremen. When she was 12 years old, she and her sister were walking through a field, and an allied plane strafed the 2 of them. Luckily he missed, but war is war. My parents were blessed to be sponsored by am American soldier to come to the US. Both my parents became American citizens after I was born, and I am thankful to be an American. I couldn't get Germany out of my system though, and worked for LH Cargo for 23 years before becoming disabled. It sure was nice to have been able to go to Germany for training in Seeheim! Sorry for my rambling. Thank you so much for sharing "Frances Dell" with us. Warbirds really is one of my favorite KZbin channels! Tschüss!

Goosebumps. My grandfather flew from Oppeln / Schlesien to Germany after having been prisonened in France after D-Day and worked in USA until 1945. The US Family supported my family until the 70s.

@@Warbirds things like this always make me wonder if your family and mine might have known each other, but we will never know. I had hoped to go to Schlesien with my mother, but she passed 2 years ago from cancer. I hope that I can take my family and see where she was from. We got to go to Bremen back in 2014. Sometimes I really want to move to Germany, but that wouldn't be fair to my wife, being that she is Korean. Thank you for the reply, and thank you so much for the great videos you post for us!

A question about something I've never noticed before: Why does the pilot close those smaller landing gear doors at 0:12? Is it because they block the air intake?
@Juno582 ай бұрын
Those gear doors come up with the running engine, when hydraulic pressure is achieved. If the engine is switched off, the doors come out again.
