One of the most prominent ways to reconnect with history and the roots of where you belong is by revisiting the ancient monuments and structures in any city. These monuments are like souvenirs that were left to give us a glimpse of the art, study and culture of those times. Being the cultural capital of Maharashtra, Pune has a very strong cultural presence and has been a land of legends and incredible folklores. Adding to the list is one such historic temple, Shree Vitthal Rukmini Temple in Aundh that’s a must visit!
The temple was built almost 285 years ago during the Peshwa Era, and at that time, Aundh village was under the protection of Mahadji Shinde. The temple was constructed by Kedarji Shinde and Shalubai Shinde and is now also home to their samadhis. Not only is the temple beautiful but the charm lies in its location as well. Built on a huge square compound right below the Aundh Bridge, with the Mula- Mutha river passing by!
As you enter the temple, you’ll see a grand entrance and maha jyot (diya) on the right, made with black stone situated in the parisar of the temple. As you walk ahead and step into the main temple, there is a golden turtle above which hangs like a bell. From this place, you can see the enchanting Vitthal Rukmini shrine made with black basalt stone and decorated with golden ornaments with a beautiful golden carved wall as the backdrop. On the right, lies a marble carved idol of Sant Turakaram and Sant Nyaneshwar’s murti is on the left. The murti is truly loved and appreciated by the devotees; and many often feel the presence of Vitthal and Rukmini as well. Such is the serenity and tranquility of the temple that visitors feel like they are having a conversation with the almighty. Ah, what an experience this must be!
Over the years the temple lost its original charm but was restored and re-decorated by The Bhale Family in 2008. It was during the restoration when the Sabha mandap and the Nakshatra garden were added. The unused stones found at the site were used to make the deepastambha too. The oil paint was removed and the original basalt stone was restored
If you like to attend the pooja, you should reach the temple at 7 am. After your prayers, sit by the river, soak in the peace or have a long chat with your loved ones!
