I played a civ 1 game back in 1993-4, on largest earth, as Rome, with 2 or 3 other civs: Russia, Zulu, and Germany, I think. I build two militia, got 4 huts all with cavalry, and ended up wiping out everyone with a giant horde of cavalry in a matter of like 10 turns, but decided to leave push a Zulu settler into a Ethiopia peninsula, then surrounded with cavalry, and later boats, so it couldn’t grow. I then populated the entire world, including every spot on Arctic and Antarctic, later terraforming all tiles in the world into grassland, and was rocking like 1 or 265,000,000 million population - memory a bit fuzzy on the numbers. Each turn took 10 minutes to do on my 365 PC 😂, I had 250+ cities, a bunch reaching size 42 with huge caravan networks… Was insane! 😂

Different govts give extra yields PER TILE, yet you're still rocking Chiefdom in 1500AD. When talking to an AI the background shows you their govt. The extra guys in the back are the advisors.

The AI leaving troops in city borders was my biggest issue with the original. I usually went democracy for the extra money and lack of corruption and then they'd do that crap and my congress would overrule me when I wanted to declare ware prior to having the UN, so I'd revolt, swap to communism, go to war, kick them off my lands, and swap back to democracy when I could! That was one of the things that 2 really fixed.

It's expensive, but a workaround is to have your own units around in strategic locations to maintain zones of control.

The tech tree was included in the box a big fold-out sheet - basically a poster - you could keep as reference next to the computer. They did that with Civ II and Alpha Centauri as well, but believe Civ 3 was the first to have it built into the game, or maybe it was 4. Been a while

I love how Lewis said “at least they haven’t pillaged” and the two settlers immediately pillaged his land. Gotta get rid of those before they decide to just put a city down for no reason in the middle of your land, as was often the case when I used to play this game.

Might I also encourage checking out mods for the older games, not much for civ 1. But Civ 2, 3, and 4 have some amazing one. Love this, will watch whenever you make the episodes. I hope you all are able to use the music for civ 2, 3, and 4. Four may be spotty cause there's a lot in there. My favorite songs are from civ 3, and civ 2 has some with some awesome atmosphere. Thanks for the vids fams.

3:30 The problem is not that you have too many settlers. It's that you built them in tiny towns with barely any food to spare who now have to support them. Send them to your bigger cities with more food to spare, and have them support your settlers. Do the same for units that require production. Have your cities with lots of production support them. Also IMPORTANT note: unlike in modern civ games, in civ1,2,3 and i think also 4, if you found a city with a settler on an existing city, the settler simply is disbanded and adds 1 pop to that city. DO NOT DISBAND YOUR SETTLERS! Use them to increase pop!!

this game is great, and it's fun watching you guys wonder wtf is going on. cant wait for you to do civ 2 - my personal fave! it's basically a much more understandable version of this :) p.s. the units have an origin city listed on them that's paying the maintenance (as you're just-about working out), but you can change the city to one of your bigger ones and/or pump out loads from your big cities and attach them to the little ones once they get there for the garrison, etc.

The game only has 2 victory conditions, and the other one doesn't come into play until they've researched pretty much everything. Also, AI back in the day (even up to Civ 5 and probably forward) was there just to create tension. It was never there to seem like an actual nation lead by human beings. I never looked at Civilization the same way again, until I played Master of Orion 2 with the Repulsive train, which disallows all forms of diplomacy except declaring war or proposing peace. It was the most peaceful game I ever played, because the AI could not make demands, which would cause it to become upset. I then realized that diplomacy with the AI is a trap.
