The Biwa has not only become one of my most favourite Japanese instrument, but one of my favourite instruments period! It’s haunting sound, it’s vibrant tone, and how it sends a chill down my spine makes me lost in its sound. I’m glad more anime such as Demon Slayer and the Heike Tale are showcasing this beautiful instrument which I don’t think is given enough attention as it should. Yes I love the Shamisen, Koto, Shakuhachi, etc but the Biwa has a sound to it that just captivates you. I can see why the ancient Japanese thought it could open its way into the spirit world.

How intimate sounds run overwhelmingly with the tears inside and how, bursting in and out reproduce this deep the psyche of the Japanese soul. What you hear is what they listen to, whether the tears of sorrow or of joy. And here it is the arts of a traditional expression of emotions which cannot but unravel the roots of the spirit of Japan and its people.

Well I've been learning Indian classical music from the past 6 years and we have 2 same instruments like "biwa" one is called "sitar" which has 16 strings and other is a "tanpura" which has 4 strings! We have a lot of cultural similarities!
