@muthesquirrel7 жыл бұрын
Tony Hakston+ From what I read once about elementals and their origins the most likely story is that because salamanders like dry wood, they'd often find their way into firewood piles. Then when the wood was thrown on the fire, the salamanders would quickly dart out to escape the flames, but people thought they were being born from the flames. The bright yellow dots and sooty-coloured skin likely helped that belief.

As someone who does J2E localization, the "men" thing is probably an aggressively literal translation of the 人 suffix
@summitsummit36348 жыл бұрын
Kzinssie (porygonlover322) 人? Person?
@porygonlover3228 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but it's also often used to indicate nationality or race - 日本人 (Japanese person), アメリカ人 (American person), 黒人 (black person), etc. So the use of an animal name followed by 人 usually indicates "person of the [animal] nation/race/tribe", but "[animal] man" is a lazy way to translate it. Basically, my guess is that the "salamander men" were originally トカゲ人 - as another bonus, トカゲ/salamander is used as the generic word for reptiles in Japanese, much like "lizard" is in English. I'd go with "Reptilians" as a translation, assuming it was in fact トカゲ人 originally.
@summitsummit36348 жыл бұрын
Kzinssie (porygonlover322) I know what 人 is, but only from Chinese (the characters are the same for Ren/men) but I was just wondering why you mentioned it. I was just curious as to why you thought what you did in your initial comment.

I mean, it _is_ a tokusatsu. Also it might have a similar story to _Prince_ of Space, which was a "movie" created by cutting together several episodes of a Japanese _series_ into a single movie. And redubbing everything. And that's actualyl why some elements, most notably "Your weapons are useless against me!" keep getting reused.

If you look this movie up, you'd discover that this is a collection of 2 movies from a film series in Japan from the 50s & this movie comes from the middle of the series, hence the getting right into the plot. I agree this is some brilliant craziness. Then again, most Tokusatsu is. If you need to know what that genre is, it's action shows & films like Power Rangers, which is made from new American footage & dubbing of Japanese footage from Super Sentai, its parent series from Japan. Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Metal Heroes, etc are Tokusatsu. Probably more than anyone wanted to know, but meh.

My cat fucking shat so much poop in the middle of my room. ON MY INTERNET CABLES. I've been washing my room and all the cables carefully for hours until the stench has gone. It's still fucking there, though luckily I am ventilating that room while sitting here. And even then I'm not sure if that will work. And my brother along with his to-be wife is coming in 2 days, fuck. Now imagine tee-heeing and meow-meowing with a HAWT cat girl all day long, then you wake up the next day, and she shat on your carpet. That is the worst cockblock in the history of anything ever. And it happened because the fusion happened with a sliiiiiiiight flaw which made the cat girls actually be a little cat-like. Let's hope my cat won't be a dick when he grows up. What a dick.

To be fair, a lot of foreign (mostly Japanese) B-movies in the 50s and 60s, when arriving in the US, were recut for an American audience. The most famous example is Godzilla (1954), in which the Americans inserted an English narration and reshot some of the scenes with a Caucasian actor (Raymond Burr). This American version will later become known as "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" (after a re-release of the original Godzilla in the US).

This movie looks incredible, and I'm glad you made the mistake between the two and gave this beautiful gem more exposure.. but you still need to review Prince Of Space.

If that's the case you've never read/watched a story where the character of superman is properly fleshed out.

you want to know what makes superman great? read all-star superman. though, i will concede that there are a good amount of writers who have no idea how to make superman work as an interesting character.

The Salamander Men die when exposed to water. I'll give you a couple minutes to think about how stupid that is. These aliens are supposedly salamanders, an animal that needs constant moisture to live, yet they explode when wet.

You are lucky that you dont understand Russian, otherwise you would have to watch many more unbearably bad films to find the worst

+Kate Senatskaya This is totally random but probably the best place to ever ask this, do you perhaps know the name of this old Russian movie about a shoe factory where literally nothing happens for the whole movie? I think it was made in the 80s but I could be very very wrong about that

If these salamander men explode in water, why would they even go to earth; having a surface area of 70% water. I don't care how rich a place is, I would not attack a place made of 70% of what can kill me indefinitely.

Starman or the Giant or spaceman, depending on where this movie was shown is actually a TV serie from the sixties. 3 or 4 movies were just a bunch of episodes put together. These movies were not intended to impress other than kids. I was among them and I enjoyed every one of them. The idea was to produce a Japanese Superman likeTV series. The budget was ridiculous compared to the rather mediocre Superman at the time which had a larger budget thanks to well established add sponsors.Anyways, I bought the DVDs lately and I must confess, even though the special effects seems too outdated, I still feel the magic I felt for when I was a kid. Eh, I live in France and Starman was called Spaceman. Superman TV series was not available in France back then and I only saw a few episodes lately on youtube but as an adult that is why I drew the comparison. Be safe.
