Got to see a pair of F-14's at the Salinas Municipal Airport 1992-93 cant remember exactly was so cool the pilots hung around got to talk to them for awhile. The engines were incredibly loud they did a high speed fly over just under the sound barrier I later heard some homes windows were broken you could hear car alarms going off all over the city 100's of them. We were there to see SCCA car racing at Laguna Seca raceway.
@officialgmusic4 жыл бұрын
blastman8888 the barrier was not broken under the speed of sound Plus if the barrier was actually broken. Those aviators would have been In some major trouble Plus supersonic aircraft are not allowed to break the sound barrier while flying in and around civilian airspace Car alarms going off is about the only believable thing. Broken windows .. no.. plus not only that , civilians would have been injured from the boom itself and the pressure from the shock wave.

Ironic they have a Starfighter there and here you have an F-14A. The proposed Starfighter evolution, the CL-1200 Lancer, was supposed to have an option for an alternative powerplant, the TF30. Little did everybody appreciate how many headaches the TF30 would create for both the Air Force and the Navy during its service life with the US Armed Forces! At the time the CL-1200 was planned, the TF30 was the most afterburning turbofan available. I think they already 20,000 lb thrust models in service and the TF30 was eventually developed to 25,000 lbs afterburning thrust. The TF30 25k model was used in the F-111F, re-engined F-111Es, and the Australian F-111C. The initial CL-1200 powerplant would still be a J79 but a more powerful unit (19,000-20,000 lb thrust in afterburner?) than the J79's that powered the the F-4E and F-4J. Those production units were 18,000 lb thrust range, about the most powerful J79 that were produced aside from experimental units like the J79 adapted for the F-16/79.

Even the Navy regrets not keeping her... Hard learned lesson on their behalf. They've done a lot of stupid shit over the past 20 years... The Navy should have gone with the Super Tomcat 21, then eventually the ASF-14 version, and god knows what after that. Too much versatility and capability in one jet that the F-18 (and in many ways the F-35) cannot fill. There were rapid technological advances over the past 20 to 30 years that could have made the F-14 an absolute monster of an aircraft that was far, far more reliable, and insanely capable. They also got rid of the EA-6B and S-3 around the same timeframe... and there's still no carrier based replacement. The Tomcat could have potentially covered all of these roles as well.

All those pretty Reaper Jets on the Oceana ramp? Just pick another one! A pilot or RIO of any rank can "down" a jet before launch for any reason. Their Crew Chief can too. The Navy invests a lot of time and expense training skilled and talented people. Safety is tantamount. The Crew, the Ship, in this case the the spectators at the airshow, all contribute to that decision. Two, She's a very valuable airplane. Nose gear trouble on a land Station could contribute to quite a mishap.
