P0740 is one of the most common transmission trouble codes. It means that the Accord‘s computer has detected that there is an issue with the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid circuit.
The TCC “locks” the drivetrain, which allows for a true mechanical connection between the transmission and the engine. In effect, this allows an automatic transmission to function like a manual transmission at certain speeds and engine loads, and eliminates all slipping from the transmission.
P0740 Symptoms: Honda Accord
The symptoms of P0740 vary greatly. If the converter stays unlocked, it can be a nuisance. If it locks when it shouldn’t be, that’s where it can get dicey.
The most common symptoms include:
Poor Gas Mileage- If the converter is not locking at speed, the engine’s RPM’s will stay higher. This decreases fuel mileage.
Stutters and Stalls- This would be a symptom of the transmission locking when it should not be. It feels exactly like when you need to downshift in a manual transmission.
Higher RPM on highway- If the converter is not locking, it can lead to higher RPM on the highway. This increases fuel mileage and makes the transmission operate at a higher temperature.
Service Engine Soon Light
Transmission Fluid
If there isn’t enough transmission fluid, the transmission will not be able to operate normally. There are many symptoms of low transmission fluid. The most noticeable one is going to be the transmission slipping.
If the transmission fluid is dirty or burnt, it can make the transmission behave in a way that is not normal and throw the P0740 code. Here’s a pretty good guide on transmission fluid color.
If the fluid is low or bad, replacing should be considered an urgent priority. The good news is that transmission fluid and filters are cheap.
Wiring Issues
The wiring harness that goes to and from the transmission is one of the more vulnerable pieces of wiring on a vehicle. Inspecting the harness for obvious signs of distress, checking the connection at the transmission itself, and finally a continuity test can go a long way in diagnosing your Accord.
TCC Solenoid
It is highly likely that the torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC) has gone bad. But, jumping straight to this conclusion without inspecting the transmission fluid and wiring can cause a lot of undue headache.
Torque Converter
The torque converter itself or torque converter clutch can go bad and throw the P0740 code.
Problem in the Case
If the TCC seems to be functioning properly, it may be that the problem is in the transmission case itself. It could be a valve body issue, a problem with the pressure going through the transmission, or a clogged filter.

Thanks for the info. Did you use an OEM PART? We're there any drivability issues or just the MIL light and code? Thanks for sharing 😄
@bundysgarage
@bundysgarage 4 жыл бұрын
It was a used OE solenoid I got from a Honda specific junkyard. There were no drivability issues. Just the code and that stopped the smog which in turn held up the registration sticker.

Thank you for sharing. I recently purchased a 99 Acura 3.2TL and it has this code (P0740) and occaisionally the TCS light comes on. In addition, the shift between 1st and 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd are delayed. The vehicle will also jerk into those gears and rev up before doing so if you don't let up off the accelerator. After it's up to speed the vehicle shifts fine. I've seen videos talk about the Torque Converter Clutch solenoid being the culprit. I also have the Acura shop manual that instructs the tech to check/replace the A/T pressure clutch and Torque Converter Clutch solenoids. I called Acura parts to request the parts and they couldn't find them by name. Is there another name for those two solenoids? Lastly, did the solenoid switch work on the van?

So sorry for the delay. Yes I ran my own ground from the transmission to the chassis and that solved my blinking light. Honda has bad grounds especially during those years.

I got this code, and I think a P0730(?). My trans in my 1999TL (about 290K miles) wouldn't shift and essentially became a screaming first-gear driver. My local trans experts said I would need a new trans and the two codes together meant it was totally shot. They didn't try to sell me a trans. They told me the work would be too expensive and maybe it was time to retire the car to the big car shredder in the sky. Saddened, I sold the car for scrap metal and bought a Tacoma. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Tacoma, but I really wanted to fix my TL. I put 275K of the 290K miles on that beast. Body and interior were still looking great! Maybe with this information I would have given it a shot and would have seen if an inexpensive fix was attainable. After doing my own timing belt change about a year earlier, this looked absolutely easy-peasy.

Thats a bummer. That was a great car. I know a lot of people talk smack about it but it was a good car. Weak point being the transmission. Engine was rock solid. P0730 is incorrect gear ratio. Fixing P0740 might have cleared P0730 but it’s hard to say. But worth a shot instead of scrapping the car. If you did the timing belt (I have videos how to do that as well) you could have changed the solenoid, no problem!

I use 1 q of max life for every 4 q of Honda Transmission fluid. It fixed the same problem I was having. Low MPG's and long shifting from gear to gear. Plus changed both solenoids too. The clutch solenoid was the main problem.(that's the one closest to the engine)

Why not just use full MaxLife? I use max life 100% over the Honda ATF. Always seems smoother and better shifting.

Howdy bro well done. I have a similar problem with the D4 light flashing on my 1998 Honda Odyssey v6, 5 door. The speedo is now at 0 doesn't even move. At first it just jumped around for a while but now it dead. Tried replacing the speed sensor, nope, still nothing. I don't have any trouble driving shifting all seems ok. So what your showing me here in this video is what u recommend me doing or what? Kind regards Auburn
