If you enjoyed the movie there are two war series also directed by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.They both only have 10 episodes. Its Band of brothers ( world war 2 in Europe ) and the Pacific (world war 2 in the Pacific ). They are both just as good as saving private ryan and some would say even better because you spend more time with character and get ti know them better.

Czech Hedgehogs. There were also “Belgian Gates” further up the beach, “pyramid traps” and the long wooden ones were “ramps” with anti tank mines on them. The landing was set for low tide so most of the obstacles would be fairly useless, particularly the ramps which would otherwise have destroyed, damaged or flipped tanks and landing craft.

When I started my current job, one of our security guards was a veteran of the Normandy invasion. Sadly, he has since passed, but he attested that the depiction of the landing was accurate. One thing though that the movie doesn't portray is how long all that lasted. It was about half an hour in the film, but it took them roughly six hours to clear that beach. That vet told me he was no hero as he spent the entire time hiding. I told him I would have spent the entire time crapping myself. We asked too much of those men but they delivered, at great cost. :/

One of the English teachers in my high school - Riverdale HS in Montreal - piloted a glider full of paratroopers on D-Day, silently landing on a bridge behind enemy lines in Normandy. One thing no one talks about in the sniper scene is that the German was waiting for someone to try and help. You wound one then draw them in and kill them all. The Rangers were way to smart for that s**t!

I'm thoroughly convinced that this movie should be mandatory watching in High School. Maybe if more people saw the cost of war they'd be less willing to needlessly engage in it. By the way, that beach landing scene was accurate except for one thing. The real beach landing battle went on for almost the entire day. The first few waves had casualties as high as 70%.

I agree with you sir on everything. One more thing I wished they added to the landings was the bravery of the Navy destroyers that approached within range of the shore batteries. Those ships provided critical accurate heavy artillery support to the advance that the tanks were supposed to do.

The first 30 minutes of this movie are unbelievably intense. Some of the best pit to screen in decades. The fact that it feels like you're actually there, with the sound cutting out going in and out of water and having dirt and blood hit the cameras. Military Law Forbids “Mercy Killing” especially, fellow DOD Members. Body armor wasn’t really invented (it was, but in very short supply, not as today) then. As for, the dark humor, you need that to survive, unfortunately. Smell for body rot, then the limb needs to come off. “Airborne watching…” they were their friends watching them. Other Airborne troops. The guy with the damaged hearing possibly got sent home, after observation. Especially, if he didn’t recover his hearing.

But there are cases in the western theatre of both american forces, and german forces choosing to withdraw due to not being able to treat the casualties. Both sides tended to give aid to POWs. It's hard to get intelligence from a dead soldier.

Actually, they were meant to run the landing craft aground before they reached shore so they'd be easy pickings. What the Germans didn't expect was for the allies to time their landing at low tide. 30-40 ton tracked vehicles would have chewed up those obstacles quite easily.

There is no such thing as "bullet-proof". To make armor that's even a little bit bullet resistant, it would have to be so heavy, and, movement restricting, it would be totally impractical, not to mention, prohibitively expensive.

Another name I know them by are Tank Traps, since they were so often used to counter tanks specifically and prevent them from driving anywhere except where you wanted them to. Perfect way to ensure the tanks rolled into your planned kill zones where your anti tank guns could take them down.

Basically, after shooting this movie, Hanks and Spielberg took everything they learned and produced a 10hr non-fiction version which follows a group of soldiers from basic training to the end of the war.

15:52 You have to kinda see the French fathers perspective. The towns and surrounding areas of France were occupied by the German army for a few years. So when the civilians saw British and U.S. troops arriving, they were happy that the Allied invasion of Europe had begun and this meant the liberation of France for them. That dad saw U.S. troops and wanted to get his family to them because he felt they would be safer that way. Unfortunately, we as the audience know this is not a good move for Captain Miller because they have a mission to fulfill. The allied troops dropped behind enemy lines and on the beaches were ordered to secure the beachheads so the D-Day operation could succeed. They were ordered not to take prisoners or stop to assist in civilian relief efforts in the first couple of days. And if they failed, then they would have dropped a massive amount of troops on European territory with little or no way to evacuate them back to England.

4:11... "They should've had armour from the start." You're right. The plan was to use these tanks equipped with propellors to wade ashore. They were called Duplex Drive Shermans, or "DD tanks". Most of them floundered in the English Channel, and some just plain got hit on their way in. Hanks even mentions them when he's talking to the radioman at 4:25..."No armour has made it ashore. We've got no DD tanks on the beach." Air support was also kind of limited: bombers were sent in prior to the landings, but many of them made doubly sure to not hit the ships in the Channel and released late, sending their bombs behind the Nazi fortifications. There was actually a soldier during WWII whose brothers were KIA during the war. Difference was, he didn't have a choice whether to return or stay and fight. One of his brother's also turned up alive after being a POW

Yeah, This was pretty horrific and sadly, accurate. I think there was an old rule in the military where they wouldn't let an entire family be wiped out by war which is why they went to save him.

Those giant X's and logs on the beach are tank traps. The X's get stuck under the tanks and the logs have mines up on the tops of em, a tank slides up it and hits the mine. The logs in this scene are actually backwards though, they should have the low end facing the sea so the tanks go up the log and not just under it.

Those Iron cross-bars decorating "Omaha Beach" were called the "Czech hedgehog." Invented in Czechoslovakia, and was mostly designed to serve as a deterrent for tanks and other armored vehicles, as well as in this particular case, if the tide was right, approaching LCPVs (Landing Craft Vehicles and Personnel) and other ships attempting to land on shore.

My maternal grandfather was stationed at Peleliu during WWII. I never met him because he died in 1984. But from what my mother or my grandmother told me, he loved movies. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark was his favorite. I think he would be most pleased with this film and tickled since Steven Spielberg directed it. You must watch Schindler’s List. It’s imperative that you react to that masterpiece.

I went to see this in the theater with my father, we left about 3/4 of the way through the beach landing, I was to real for him and reminded him of the loss of his friends in Vietnam. to the best of my knowledge he has never watched this movie. First time I ever saw him breakdown. Its an amazing movie that captures some of the horrors of War. the X's on the beach are called Dragons teeth they are to prevent landing craft and armor to get to far in on the beach making it so the infantry has to spend more time in open terrain under fire.

Saving Private Ryan changed the way that war movies were made. Prior to this most of them didn't show the violence in such a realistic and sustained way. And even since then there's really only a handful of war movies that can match what Saving Private Ryan did. Those are Black Hawk Down (2001), We Were Soldiers (2002), and Lone Survivor (2013) all three of which I very highly recommend

The steel Xs you asked about are called Czech hedgehogs. Not a German invention. Just used very effectively by them. They were lined down the shore to keep landing craft from getting to beach. By design, they were built to puncture the hull of any landing craft. That would do three things. First, it would prevent the landing craft from unloading its cargo (soldiers, tanks, trucks, ammo, supplies, etc) on the beach. This kept the attacking enemy from being reinforced or resupplied. Second, by piercing the hull and sinking the landing craft, another obstacle was put in place on the approach to the beach making their enemies landing that much more difficult. Third, by keeping the attacking crafts off the beach, it kept them floundering in the open water which could possible put them in the range of the larger cannons if there were any at that installation.

You could feel the silence coming off of the audience. The violence & death was very real & authentic. Veterans confirmed it as well. Emotions ran high as they felt that impact of that beach landing. It's something I just won't forget. I own that movie now.

This became policy, to bring home the last survivor after the death of the 5 Sullivan brother wiped out the entire family when the light cruiser USS Juneau ws sunk in November of 1942. Brothers were forbidden to serve together for this reason.

This is a great film, but that scene at the beginning, of the D-Day invasion, was so intense that a bunch of American veterans had to leave the theater. A friend of mine, who was in Desert Storm and Panama, almost couldn't make it.

The giant X's on the beach are there to prevent vehicles from being able to be landed on the beach ... hence why infantry had to go in first to sieze control of the beach ... once that was done, the X's can be removed and then vehicles can be deployed to the beach.

"They should have had armor from the start". That's why that guy was trying to destroy those big metal blockades on the beach. Tanks can't move through them, which is why they couldn't land on the beaches with the infantry, Also the French family gave their kids to the Americans so they could get the kids out of there, considering the German soldiers weren't exactly being friendly to the French people in those areas. Americans were there to Liberate France, hence French people being pretty happy when they saw American troops

I appreciate the realism this movie shows when it comes to guns and how they sound and what they actually do. You really notice it when Vin Diesel's character is down and the American sniper shoots the German sniper. When we're looking through the perspective of the German's scope you see the flash of the muzzle from the gun being fired, then you hear the crack of the round breaking the sound barrier as it travels through the air, and then the impact comes which is 100% legit when it comes to firing range weapons.

7:30 ..The "X" on the beach are there to prevent those boats to actually land on the beach.... By preventing the boats to reach the sand, you're forcing the soldiers to get out into the water, were they move slow and therefore they are easier targets....

They didn't have bulletproof armor as they do now back then. Not only would it be too heavy to run in, but it also wouldn't have stopped machine gun rounds nor the heavy artillery or a grenade.

Yep even there helmets aren't bullet proof, that guy where the bullet hits his helmet was a lucky ricochet a direct hit from a bullet and its going straight through. The helmets are just moral support or whatever to make the soldiers feel safer.

Abraham Lincoln wrote that letter to a woman in New York during the Civil War when she had lost 5 sons in the war. Prior to the Normandy landing, there were 5 brothers all stationed on the same destroyer in the Pacific campaign. The ship was sunk and all 5 brothers lost their lives. After that, the military tried to split up relatives when sent to combat operations.

The opening scene depicts the D-Day landing on Omaha Beach, one of five landing beaches in the invasion of Normandy, June 6th 1944. It was a bloodbath for many reasons, and in real life lasted about 2 and a half hours. The Germans had almost run out of ammunition by the time the Americans had established a usable beachhead. Across five landing beaches and two airborne landing parachute infantry operations behind Utah and Sword Beaches, 4414 Allied soldiers died on D-Day. Almost half of them lay on Omaha Beach alone. It wasn’t even the biggest landing beach.

The X pieces were metal...the germans used them to keep amphibious and armor from rolling up on the beach. They were also pressure mined on the bottom... If they got moved, they exploded.

There's a great black and white movie called "The Fighting Sullivans". It's about an actual set of brothers who enlisted and served together in WW2. Not actually a war movie, it starts when they were kids to show you the bond they had growing up and their relationship with each other and their parents. It was because they all 5 died on the same destroyer that the US started separating siblings that served and wouldn't let them serve together.
