P1416 FIX! Cylinder 6 Reactivation Control Performance 5.7 Hemi Ram 1500 4th gen

In this video I diagnosed and fixed an issue that caused the truck to run bad and throw codes

2014 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi
I first discovered that the cylinder 6 mds solenoid was not functioning. After replacing it, there was still a misfire.
It led me to remove the valve cover to check if the lifters were good. I discovered the lifters were good so I checked the spark plugs.
Normally I would’ve check them sooner, but the previous owner claimed that they are brand new. Well he was right, they are brand new but it doesn’t help if they aren’t tightened properly 🤦‍♂️

Thanks for the video! I’ve been at a cross road with my 06 Ram 1500. I live somewhere where there are no competent mechanics. I had to wait 6 weeks to get a mechanic to do the coils and plugs!!! 6 week! Picked it up…the problem didn’t go away. Got the truck scanned at a new mechanic…mds solenoid bank#2 toast. The guy there told me they don’t do that type of work. So I said “I’ll do it myself then”. He laughed. So I parked it at home and with the help of KZbin, I did it myself. Even got one of the solenoids out with braking it! Bam 💥 Was pretty proud of myself. Now, just took it on the road. Hopeful. After about 30 mins, it started vibrating like a washing machine with shoes on! Wtf. Blew code P1416. I was about to throw in the towel, but here I go! Gonna go check if the guy who changed the plugs didn’t do it right! (That guy had also told me that there was no way I could have done the plugs and coils myself. Too hard.) Thanks to your video, I’m gonna go inspect his work. Wish me luck!

I’m glad you took the time to write that and let us know about your experience! Thank you. I’m sorry that you have to deal with people like that! Congratulations on getting the solenoid out in one piece too! I hope it ends up being something simple. If you check the spark plugs and they are good. I’d suggest pulling the valve cover to see if the rocker arms are opening the valves. Good luck! I hope you find out what the cause of this problem is. Are there any other codes at all? Also, did you replace the same solenoid as I did? Just the one? (Which is fine of course) I just want to get better look at the overall picture to help. Anyway lmk if you find anything. Take care!

Thanks so much for the reply. I definitely appreciate the input! I changed the same 2 solenoids as you. It ran like a charm for about 30 mins. I’m now getting the p1416 and a random misfire code. P1416 is new. Never seen it before. What’s weird is that I was getting that same random misfire before the mechanic changes all the coils and plugs. He changed them hoping it would fix the problem. The problem then was check engine would come on while driving and it would start to run rough, almost chocking and then just completely die. I’d be able to start it again right away. Changing the coils and plugs didn’t help. Drove back from the mechanic and truck started chocking up again. New solenoid now. New code. When the rain stops I’m gonna get back at it and I will definitely look into the rocker arms. I’ll let you know, hope it’s as simple as the plugs that aren’t tightened properly. 🤞

Nah bro, honestly. If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. If/ when they fail, it’s an easy fix. Plus, I share repair information with the world and when problems arise it’s helps multiple people out. If you have the extra money to spend and you’d like to replace them all, go for it. What I’m showing here is how to get it fixed and working, by only replacing whats not working. 💯💯🤝

Hey tha ks for the video. Ultimately what do you believe was the issue? I installed 4 new solenoids for codes. My engine was running perfectly. Now I have cylinder 1 and 6 missfires consistently and codes p1411 and p1416. I appreciate any help and knowledge

I replaced solenoids for cly 6 sol code. Afterwards I wound up with a dead miss in cly 1. Well I found out I bought 4 aftermarket solenoids that were sold and packaged as oem from a slug on ebay that in quite a bit of trouble for selling lots of phony parts. . So I went to dodge and got 4 real solenoids and installed but still had the missfire cylinder 1. I nearly burned this truck after that but diligently researched forums for a few evenings. What I found was I had to simply disconnect the battery for a few hours to restore the dead cylinder. Well hot dog it worked!. I've been a chevy and nissan tech for 30 years. Never encountered nonsense logic like this. ... I appreciate you getting back to me.

Good morning, Great Video. Could you give me the brand and model of your Diag device? Because I have the same problem as you. So I changed my 4 MDS solenoids. Change the 16 Candles. But the problem was still there. So, I completely dismantled the 2 cylinder heads in order to check the Lifters + my CAM. Everything is OK on this side. Finally, I saw that you need a box like yours to put the MDS of cylinder 6 back into inactive mode. Thank you for your Help.

I have a 08 Chrysler Aspen 5.7 hemi. I recently had someone change out all 6 deactivation solenoids and change the spark plugs. Now Im getting the codes P1414 cylinder 4 reactivation control performance and P0304 cylinder 4 misfire detected ( gasoline) ....can this be the same problem but just with a different solenoid number? Please help

What codes did you get originally? There are four deactivation solenoids. So all four were replaced? Do you know what spark plugs were put in it? The first thing I would do personally is pull the cylinder four coil pack and remove and check the spark plugs. If everything checks out. Put them back in and switch the coil pack with another cylinder and reinstall them. Lmk if you have any questions or find anything!! 💯💯🤝

Nice work man! Just wondering, after you replaced the MDS solenoid and still had the misfire on #6, did you check codes to see if P1416 still existed?

Thanks for your comment! 💯💯 p1416 is a permanent code. So it will stay in the pcm for a certain amount of time. (After about 40 heat cycles and no fault found during operation it will go away) so if I connected the scan tool and check for codes after, the p1416 will still be shown in DTCs but the check engine light won’t be on. Hope this helps!!

I pressed pause on those tech sheets that you had on the screen and it's said to use a scan tool to test the MDS solenoid. Which scan tool would that be?

I used a launch scanner in this video. Any scanner with testing capabilities can be used. 💯💯🤝

It's just not possible for me to get the Miller special tool 8815, and I know there's a risk with using a multimeter in the PCM slots, but I don't think I have any other choice. Do you think that's fine? I've located the pin spot for my 2018 ram 1500, which is pin 1 on c2 of the pcm (error code 1417) (Which would be k454, Instead of your K453 of the Service information sheets in your video) But my ground number is different than yours. Is Z904 and on mine it's Z908. That shouldn't be a problem, right? I mean the ground is a ground, right? Finally, and I'm so thankful that you're wasting your time on me, what is the C-101 harness? And where is it located? I am lost.
