P2004, P2006; Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) Function and Diagnostics (CDT)

Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) systems can be challenge to diagnose, especially when the service information available to you isn't accurate! In this training class we will explore how an IMRC system functions and how to approach diagnosing it properly the first time. Join us for the fun when we look at a 2004 Ford Focus with a sluggish driveability complaint and setting codes P2004 (IMRC stuck closed), and P2006 (IMRC stuck open).

Twice on my wife’s 2008 4 cyl. Mercury Milan the obd scanner noted a vacuum leak. Easily found them and replaced bad vacuum lines, near front top of engine in intake area. The first one may have been there for many months as the car had belonged to my. Ice before hand, and car maintenance was unheard of. Could these vacuum leaks contributed to all the extra gunk in the intake plenum?

Great info. Especially concerning the confusion between how they named IMTV, IMRC etc. Made a new harness for an 05 Focus ZX4 ST, think I may have mixed up the wiring for the two solenoids lol. Gotta buy the OEM powertrain control / emissions diagnostics manual… workshop manual and wiring diagrams manual won’t cut it for this mess lol

Ever seen a P2008 code? It's on a 2018 dodge 6.4 hemi. The code pops up even with the actuator totally removed from the manifold. Ideas?

Thank you for explaining this! I did the pressure test on my manifold. The solenoid is activating the lower shutters/valves but when I apply manual pressure, vacuum the lower valves are leaking very slowly. time for a new one? I have a constant 500-1000 RPM idle fluctuation . thank you again

@@GoTechTraining that's been my problem, no codes at all. Total vacuum problem. I pull the vacuum line off the actuator solenoid, car idles fine just sluggish due to open vacuum. That's the only thing I can think of since everything else is hooked up to the computer and should throw a code. Plus I already replaced just about every airflow sensor, Mas air, MAP, Knock and was probably going to do the EGR if I take the manifold out again.

Hey Gavin69, the first step would be to monitor the signals to the valves and see if they are being commanded. From there you'll need to verify the flaps can physically move. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

about 2 or 3 hours if your carefully following along with a video.. After your first time you should be able to do it all in under an hour. Fords are very simple and straight to the point engines I love em!!

Hey Rebecca, A runner is a flap or door in the intake manifold the moves during different loads and engine speeds. The movement changes the velocity and direction the air enters the cylinders which can help with performance and complete combustion. Hope this helps, thanks for reaching out Ryan

Answer C forsure!!! constantly allowing a/f ratio into conbustion chamber giving more power and responsiveness but lacks fuel economy cause its wasting extra fuel!! engine studders because not all are stuck open so its uneven pressures inside! thats what i think! not sure if im correct but thats what makesense!! My sister has both codes on her 09 Mazda 3! yeah they expensive!

Yeh, you are correct! It was C. They do get expensive to fix. If you ask me it's kind of a cheap design. Plastic that is constantly moving right next to a hot cylinder head is always going to wear and run into issues. Thanks for commenting. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

Hey Stand Alone, sure it might. Depends on what is exactly wrong with the flaps. If they are not moving, but in good shape it probably will just make the car lack power...but if they are broken, they could move and block the air entering...which could cause a stall condition. I know my comment comes 5 years late: Hey that happened to me. I just fixed my 2007 Ford Focus 2.0L thermostat. It was $300 plus. After I got the bill. They cleared the code. Then what happened it came back with a another code. It said: Intake manifold control valve is stuck open. This was yesterday. I said We just paid to fix the thermostat. Now the intake manifold isn’t functioning. It’s really weird. I collect Social Security Income. My mom is stretched thin. I’m kinda stressed. I’m a person with emotional and behavioral disabilities that are sever. My poor mom. Is worried bout my aunt and uncle. She’s not doing so well money wise. I used to look to her on money. I know she’s not Wonder Woman.
