I own both a 1911 and a P-38 (1942, by Mauser). The P-38 is so well designed, to fit in your hand, it's a true pleasure to shoot, and the de-cock safety, and the 'chambered round' indicator are great features. I'll take it over the .45.

In the end, I think hickok says it best: you like 9mm then the P38 is your baby. You like .45 ACP, the 1911a1 will serve you well. Neither is better. They are both amazing firearms that could hold their own against almost anything made today. Thanks for the frank discussion!

1911a1 was by far the best handgun though until the p38 came out 30 years later. And still the p38 wasn't next gen or better, just a handgun on the same level.

@@mver191 I always wondered why Germans never adopted the .45acp since the p38 only holds 8+1, the 1911 7+1. I guess since the 9mm luger had a faster speed it was more advantageous since they used 9mm in their smg

I served my time as a Panzer Grenadier, my side arm was the P01, a modern version of the P38. The P01/P38 was by far, the much better pistol and would take any 9mm ammo from ball to P+ and did not miss a beat. By the way the Luger P08 wasn't that fragile, just expensive to make. Think difference in the late 1930's is about $10 more expensive in your money.

The P.38 has a great advantage. You can bear it with a round in the chamber, uncocked, safety off. Nothing can happen because the firing pin is retained by the trigger safety device. To fire you only pull the trigger. And it has a little pin above the hammer that indicates whether there is a round in the chamber.

Jeff Hardymon actually it isnt much different from the 1911 if you lived in that time period. soldiers wouldnt just drop the magazines on the ground anyway as they needed it later, so a mag change on the 1911 tskes about the same time. the heel release on the p.38 exists to encourage keeping the magzine and not giving the illusion of it being discardable.

I carry a 1980 P1 variant and while a heel release would lose in a range competition, it's feels pretty intuitive once you learn them. It's fully reliant on your support hand, however the nature of it's placement means you have positive feedback to feel when it's locked in. So from it's pointer grip stance, to it's mag release; it's really a testament to how guns then were designed around being a physical extension of the shooter. It's crazy how we went from that to Glock, modern (brick on a stick) designs.

Both pistols the P38 as well as the 1911 are superb sidearms. My personal choice from the point of a European is that the 9mm Para rounds are big enough and powerful enough. Federal Pistol Target Shooting competition is mostly restricted to 7.65mm Para and 9mm Para and never met a fellow shooter who was moaning regarding the magazine release, despite the magazin release button is the slightly faster way for dropping the empty magazine by using only one hand.

Just bought one. It's marked AC 42 which means it's made by Walther in 1942... it's a bit unique though because the finish on the gun resembles the earlier pre-war models as opposed to the more crude finish on wartime productions. Apart from being fully blued and polished, it also has these really redish/brown grips which I have not seen before. It's marked with all the right stamps and as far as I can tell it is all original finish.

According to Evan Marshall, there is a 1% difference in stopping power in the two cartridges when using ball ammo. So basically, no difference at all really. So Jeff Cooper was full of it when he used to say: "they all fall to hardball." Personally, I would rather have a Browning Hi-Power than either of these.

+LK Campbell Yup, 9mm vs. .45 ACP, hollow point vs. FMJ, if the gun works and the shooter is trained with that firearm, then that's all that matters in my opinion. People worry too much about the little things that only differ a percent or two.
@arcflashed
@arcflashed 8 жыл бұрын
+LK Campbell I carry .9mm because the guns are more concealable. .45 is more effective. But more capacity in .9mm, concealment ability, less recoil. Makes the 9 a good choice. And a 9mm 147 grn HST is very effective. But.. compared to the .45 HST 230 grn the .45 wins every time.
@roberth.goddardthefatherof6376
@roberth.goddardthefatherof6376 6 жыл бұрын
from a Kinetic energy standpoint yes, both have ~480 Joules of kinetic energy BUT the .45 has alot more momentum and copper,lead mass to rip bigger wound channels the momentum of the .45 is 3.8Kg-m/s compared to just 2.74Kg-m/s for the 9mm. I think that Damage to the target is an aggregate balance between Kinetic energy and Momentum and they both have the Same kinetic energy (1:1) but the .45 has 40% (1.4:1) more momentum so 1.4/1 = 1.4 so the .45 does 40% more damage overall.

P-38 all the way. I love me some 1911, but my favorite pistol from my collection is a Spreewerke P-38 made just before the invasion of Berlin. You can tell because you can easily see all the machine marks. It's such a piece of history, a weapon of a (very rightly) dying part of German history. It was taken off of very young German officer who surrendered during the invasion of Berlin. I've never fired that pistol, but the first pistol I fired that was not a .22 was a P1.

S&W borrowed a lot from the P38 Walther and the 1911 to create their model 39 & 59 series in the 1950s. In fact P38 magazines fit in a S&W 39 and only need a small square hole cut into to it to function in the S&W 39.

I don't doubt that a bit. Most service people do not grow up firing a 1911; they've shot revolvers only more than likely, provided they'd shot ANY sort of handgun. The 1911 takes some getting used to before one falls in love with it. Not really the time and patience in military training for that, I'd guess. The P39 would be less recoil and easier to shoot well for somebody who has limited time on the trigger of a semi-auto pistol.

The 1911 was/is a success within the US but everybody else had the Hi-Power and more than 50 countries still use it as their military sidearm.

Ja bi lično pre 1911, jer je za nijansu bolji što se tiče preciznosti i ima bolji kalibar, ali sve ukupno ne možeš da odabereš bolji od ova dva, jer su oba vrhunski pištolji

If I recall correctly, they weren't trained to shoot one handed with M1911's because they were cavalrymen with horses (the majority of M1911 users weren't.) It was actually because firing a pistol one handed means you can be standing side on to the target, which reduces your silhouette and makes a smaller target to shoot at as your target width goes from being from hip to hip, down to simply the side of torso. Duelists had been doing this since pistols came about in duels so as to reduce the likelihood of their opponent hitting them in a pistol duel, and most soldiers from most countries were trained to fire handguns with one hand up until the Weaver Stance became more common and was found to be more effective to use (as well as the fact that standing side on to the target exposes the sides of a vest which are often weaker.)

Biggest advantage of the P38 is that it is a double action with a hammer drop safety. It could be carried with one in the chamber safely. The 1911a1 was not (theoretically) carried loaded. Hammer down on an empty chamber was protocol. As referred to the P38 lives on in the Beretta M9. I am not certain how the DA was missed in this video. Hickock45 didn't use the DA function in it so I guess he jus forgot to mention it? I like both guns equally well.

I carried a Kimber Classic from 1996 until last year when I switched to a Ruger LC9S. I prefer the 45 over the 9mm, but the older I got, the less I tolerated the weight of the Kimber. The LC9S and ballistics of short barreled, 9mm ammo made the switch a no brainer.

+Atouk I also have the Ruger LC9s. It is just a 1/4 inch too small for having a great trigger hold, but gosh, you can carry it all day long everywhere, go to bed and realize that it is still on. Shot 100 rounds right out of the box with no problems. A excellent choice for carry.

Michael Venia I purchased it with 1000 rounds of FMJ range ammo and have fired the piss out of it! No malfunctions and it's hella accurate even at distances. I purchased 2 extra Pro Mag magazines and have it armed with 115 grain Hornady critical defense ammo. I have run several boxes of the Hornady ammo through it and it's definitely a hand banger, but the pistol handles it with no problems. Oh, I bring it to bed with me every night. where it rests under my pillow :-) Edit: I also removed the Magazine safety within 5 days of purchasing. I hated having to use that dummy magazine!

I personally prefer the P38. Which one is better? Not really sure. The 1911 has a .45 ACP round which is bigger than the P38's 9mm and they have about the same mag capacity. Does the difference in calibre really matter that much though? The P38 definitely has a lot more advanced/modern features on it like the decocker safety and double action trigger. In my personal opinion it's a lot sexier as well. I don't know which one is more accurate and reliable, though I'm sure both are more than good enough in that category. If I had a choice between the two I'd go with the P38 because I think it looks a lot better and overall as a firearm it's more interesting. I don't think there is such a huge difference between them when it comes to performance; whoever draws first is gonna win and it all comes down to circumstance.
